A Camping We Will Go

camping-collage2

We had a fabulous time camping with our friends at Hillsborough River State Park this past weekend.  I didn’t lose any children.  I dodged an allergy attack.  I even avoided being attacked by a wild boar or rabid raccoon or pecked to death by a hungry hawk.

Unfortunately, an asthma attack was unavoidable for my poor little Emmalynn and like fine neglectful parents, we forgot her nebulizer.  Luckily, the campground was only about 30 minutes away from home and since Allan had to restock his beer, he found it in his heart to swing home to grab her “cloud machine”.

With each camping trip, my family and I are becoming old camping pros.  We were far more organized for this trip than past trips.  I honestly don’t know how we pulled it off!  We arrived at the site around 1:30 with plenty of time to pitch the tent and get settled.  Even our good friends, Erika and John were amazed with our efficiency.

Maybe it was the combination of Zyrtec and beer or the fact my youngest is growing up, but I felt so relaxed.  Since we added Emmalynn’s potty chair as one of the essential items for the trip, she peed on the potty and stayed dry throughout the day and night.  But most importantly, my little Houdini didn’t perform any disappearing acts by wandering off into the woods and she minded the camping rules.

Even Allana seemed to understand the rules a bit better for our third family camping trip.  Perhaps it was the threat of staying in the car the entire time that helped modify her behavior.

Somehow, even the weather seemed to cooperate, with warm sunny days and cool evenings.  It was the perfect weather for camping.

On Saturday, after Allan returned with the much needed nebulizer and beer, we hiked on a short mile or so trail along the Hillsborough River.  We spotted a turtle, an armadillo and a huge golden orb spider.  I gave each of the children paper bags to collect items while on our hike and after the hike, they made gorgeous collages with the items they collected.

When we returned home on Sunday, we picked up a hitchhiker on the way.  We discovered this little lady hanging out on ceiling of my car.

I really enjoy camping but I truly cherish the memories we create for our children.  These are the simple times that they will look back upon with delight and want to replicate for their children.

This Momma Likes It on Top

I have to confess.  The title of this post is a desperate and shameless attempt to get your attention.

Now, that I have your attention, please vote for me on Top Momma.  Click on Emmalynn’s marvelous masterpiece to vote for my blog.  By clicking on her artwork, you will help keep my blog on the front page and make me a Top Momma Contender.

In case you are wondering what medium she used to create that lovely picture, reread this post. I was a mom on the edge that day.

My Hope

A friend sent me this political cartoon and I love the message it embraces.

On election night, Obama’s victory speech brought me to tears.  I still can not believe I have lived to witness such an event in my lifetime and that my children will know a world truly without boundaries and free of prejudice.

I also have a dream.  I believe that he will be the president to bring us into better times again.  I envision a great leader who will bring a divided nation together while spreading a message of peace across the globe.  I believe his plans for a better America are not simply words to win a campaign, but an actual design to lift this nation out of the turmoil we are now facing.  You are my hope, President Elect Obama.  Now, prove you are worthy of it.

God bless America!

One Halloween, Two Costume Changes

When choosing her costume this year, Emmalynn decided to be Ariel again.  Any other parent would simply let their child wear the same costume again two years in a row, but not this Kodak capturing moment  slightly OCD momma.  Besides, last year the poor thing kept tripping on her fins and shredded the bottom, which is a perfectly good reason excuse to buy my little princess a new costume anyway.

Given that my Emmalynn is the messiest mermaid in the sea, I suppose it wouldn’t matter if she wore a torn costume because she would just stain it and rip it regardless.  However, this fashion savvy momma simply couldn’t allow her child to repeat the same costume, despite how funny it would be years from now.  So, a trip to the Disney store to purchase the 2008 Ariel would be inevitable.

Last Halloween, Emmalynn wore an Ariel costume from Target because it was much cheaper, I knew she would destroy it and I didn’t like the look of the Disney Store’s 2007 Ariel costume.  Ariel costumes should have pretty sparkly fins not tied-dyed hippie trim.  Besides, Emmalynn loves Ariel, therefore a mermaid costume that resembles Ariel was a must and the costume selection was winner with Emmalynn.  She continually displayed her affection for it as she jumped about pretending to be Ariel breaking the ocean’s surface and saying “Splash!  Splash!”

Each year on Halloween morning, Allana’s school hosts a literacy parade.  The idea is to have the children dress as storybook characters and carry a book which matches their costume.  Since Allana loves fairies, I tried to encourage her to dress as a fairy from one of her favorite Rainbow Magic books.  I explained to Allana that she could simply pick one color, like red, and pretend to be Ruby the Red Fairy.  It would be a lot cheaper, easy to do and demonstrate some real creativity, but alas, she wasn’t enthused by my ingenious idea.  With that, we searched catalogs and strolled through the costume aisle at Target, but nothing seemed to catch Allana’s interest until our little trip to the Disney store.

All the glitzy merchandise of the Disney Store enticed my oldest daughter on our visit to purchase Emmlaynn’s 2008 Ariel costume.  Although I tried to only purchase one costume that day, we left the store with two: one Ariel and one Tinkerbell costume complete with battery operated twinkling wings, of course.  Fortunately, with the release of Tinkerbell’s new movie, there are plenty of books on the shelf to pair with her costume for the literacy parade.

A couple weeks later, as Halloween (and Allana’s Scooby Doo Birthday Party) drew nearer, Allana changed her mind and decided she wanted to dress as Daphne for Halloween and her birthday.

“But what about your Tinkerbell costume?”

“I”ll be Daphne for the Moms on the Go Halloweeen party and the school parade, because I have lots of Scooby Doo books.  Then, I’ll be Tinkerbell for Halloween night and I’ll be Daphne for my birthday.”

“Um…no.  I don’t think so, dear.  Pick one costume.  It’s either Daphne or Tinkerbell.”

“I want to be Daphne.”

So, I returned the $40 Tinkerbell get-up and bought her a $20 Daphne costume from Target.  Both girls looked adorable for the party.

After Halloween, I buy Halloween costumes 50-75% off as Christmas presents to add to my girl’s dress-up boxes.  Last year, I bought Emmalynn a Scooby Doo costume for $3, which she never played with until last week.  A few days before Halloween, Emmalynn pulled out the Scooby Doo costume and demanded to be Scooby Doo for Halloween.  Though it was too late to return her Ariel costume to the Disney Store, it’s never too late for eBay.

Luckily, the weather cooled down in time for Halloween and Emmalynn’s Scooby costume fit her like a pair of cozy pajamas.  Seeing Emmalynn in that snuggly Scooby Doo costume materialized images of me wearing a plastic Scooby Doo mask and costume as a young child.

Years from now, when my girls are flipping through our photo albums, Emmalynn will ask why she was forced to dress as Scooby Doo when her sister dressed as Daphne.  At least the money I save on Halloween costumes can be used for therapy.

Sunday Running Log #11

I believe I may be the only person to publically declare my love for Daylight Savings Time today.  While others may be groaning about waking up an hour earlier as their bodies haven’t adjusted to the time change yet, I am walking on sunshine and thrilled to be running with sunrises again.

Saturday night, I happily set my clock an hour behind.  Like a child at Christmas, I anticipated a magical moment the next morning and as to not disappoint, my running partners and I were greeted by a beautiful sunrise early Sunday morning.  Even a rainbow stretched across the sky as we ran and I knew our run would be magically delicious.

For this week’s Sunday, I faced 13 miles and the half-way mark to my final goal.  I accomplished my run in a decent time (2:29:36).  Since last week, I really pushed myself and felt exhausted after my run, I tried to keep my pace at 10-10:30 this week.  Plus, I ate well the day before, ate an hour before my run, walked when necessary and rehydrated at each rest.

During this week’s long Sunday run, I encountered an unfortunate situation when someone pinched my water bottle.  During my runs, I strategically place my water bottles around the neighborhood while I run because I hate running with water bottles.  I don’t like holding water bottles while I run and unfortunately, I do not own a water fanny pack.  Instead, I prefer to leave my water bottles next to random stop signs so when I return from a 2 mile stretch, I can reward myself with a water break.  If my running partner wasn’t with me, I think I would have thought that I losing my mind because this thirsty thief eco-friendly neighbor also pinched Tiffany’s bottle, too.

Next weekend, I will be camping with friends.  Our camping menu often consists of mass quantities of beer and s’mores, which is not the best running food.  Thankfully, this week’s long run is a stepback week and only a 10 mile run.  Since I lack the willpower to refrain from binge drinking or eating less s’mores, I will attempt damage control on Sunday by eating healthy foods and arranging to run in the evening.
