A Run DMT Public Service Announcement

As I ran through my neighborhood last week, a miniature Doberman Pincher darted towards me.  I froze in my tracks armed with fists and a kickboxing stance.  That dog would have been catapulted into the next block over had its owner not called him home.

Then on Sunday, Lori and I witnessed two small dogs chasing down another runner.  These dogs had been let out to pee but decided to hound an innocent runner instead.

With the rising number of doggie disturbances, I have decided to make a public plea.

If you have no fence, then please put your dog on a leash.  Otherwise, you are putting your dog at risk to be kicked in the head.

This might sound cruel, but when a small dog comes yapping around my ankles, all I see is this…

I don’t care how cute your dog may be.  Fur and fangs are not cute to this runner just wanting to finish her miles.  When Cujo comes gunning for my calves, he is going to get kicked in the jowls.

Wow! I would be worried too if canines were chasing after me – especially BIG ones! I don’t blame you one bit for making a “plea” to dog owners. People really should keep their dogs on leashes when they are not fenced in anyway – just my opinion!

Btw, I think it’s REALLY COOL that your hubby has a pimp cup! LOL

haha. i hate when dogs run after me, or lurch at me, it’s scary because you aren’t expecting it. i use my “big man” voice yell at them NO! GO HOME! STAY! etc and make a mean face. it’s probably my face that does the trick. i’ll mail you a mask of my face to run in, that’ll keep them away.

I had a dog chase me for a long time whole some 16 year old kid watched. It was funny because I had to help him keep his dog from running into the busy street. I had the whole thing on my Forerunner405 and when I downloaded into tinto the computer, it looked like I must have been chased by hornets. I posted the image of the run on my blog a few months ago.

I always find that the smaller the dog, the more spirited it is in trying to attack me. Most of the big ones seem to be pretty laid back, but the ones that are the size of my shoe run at me like they’re going to protect their owner from me.

The big ones are like, “Yeah, go ahead and kill my owner. I’ll eat both of you later”.

Amen, sista! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been confronted by dogs. I want to say to the owners, “what happens when your dog runs after me and then gets hit by a car?”

Thank you, Denise, for providing such an important public service announcement! Although a dog bite might make a nice personal injury case, I would prefer to be able to run or walk outside confident that I am not going to be attacked by a dog.

Ugh. I HATE being chased by dogs. You never know what they are going to do! But I did read (and my mom does this as well) that if dog comes up to you – throw your arms up and growl at them and keep eye contact. You may feel silly – but it really does work!

I can’t stand seeing loose dogs. It is seriously such a huge pet peeve of mine (LOL, get it!) I got bit by a dog when I was 16 and lost feeling in my right leg for a short time and in 2000, 2 loose dogs (Akita’s) mauled my cat right in front of me. It was horrible and so traumatic. I ALWAYS have my dog on a leash when we’re out. Always. Sure, I understand that sometimes dogs escape, but as a general rule, dogs need to be leashed.

The people in the house across the street from me own a little chihuahua. He gets out constantly and roams the block. I’m not a spiteful person, but I’m tempted to call animal services because I’m afraid for the dog’s safety. A few times he’s come after me while in the yard and I’ve shoved him away with my shoes. So I totally feel ya girl. We gotta do what we feel is right for us.
