I Love Oscar

With summer quickly approaching in the Sunshine State, our short-lived camping days are coming to a close.  Wanting to squeeze in one more camping trip before the heat hits us, we pitched our tent at Oscar Scherer in Osprey, FL for a few days over Spring Break.

Although we knew we wanted to go camping over Spring Break, we booked this trip last minute.  Finding a park to meet our criteria was no easy task.  The perfect campground for us needed to offer a playground close to our campsite, clean restroom facilities relatively close to our campsite, hiking trails and water activities such as canoeing and swimming.

Since many websites have claimed Oscaer Scherer to be a great family campground, I’ve had my eye on Oscar for some time.  Then, a few weeks ago, the St. Petersburg Times listed it as one of “Florida’s best family-friendly campgrounds”.    After camping at Oscar Scherer for a couple of nights over Spring Break, I would agree with the St. Pete Times declaration.

With an abundance Sabal Palms, Saw Palmettos and mangroves, the landscape certainly contained more subtropical foliage than the northern Florida parks we usually camp it, however, Oscar Scherer is still beautiful in its own right.  Once a ranch for turpentine from the Slash Pines, the Scrubby Flatwoods now serve as a protected home to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.  Cardinals and Scrub Jays frequently visited our campsite.  While canoeing, we watched a hungry Pileated Woodpecker tear into a tree to find his lunch.  Also in from our canoe, we spotted an Osprey and a Blue Heron.

The park offers several trails and a hands-on educational nature center, which are in close proximity to the campground.  Lake Osprey, a beach-like swimming spot, is a short walking distance to the campground, although the weather was too cold for us to test the waters.

Several wooded campsites follow the brackish river that flows through the park.  Thankfully, the abundance of Saw Palmettos created a safety barrier for my curious children.

The palmettos also served as partitions between sites.  Some may find the campsites a bit narrow, but our 11′x11′ tent fit quite comfortably on our little site with room to spare.

Even though our campsite was only a few short steps to the playground, we discovered two other playgrounds during our little excursions.  While hiking, we encountered a Mourning Dove and many caterpillars.

We also stumbled upon the remains of an old railroad line that now serves as The Legacy Trail (Rails to Trails) in Sarasota County.  These tracks once carried the Ringling Circus.

Perfect weather and ideal campgrounds made for a wonderful camping trip.  Oscar Scherer can certainly wear the title as a family-friendly campground.  I enjoyed our stay there so much that I’m already planning a return camping trip!

In a Van Down by the River

It’s Spring Break here, so my family and I are off on another camping trip.  If you want me, you can find me living in a van down by the river.  With the 30 mph winds whipping through Tampa Bay area at moment, I fear we will loose our tent and really be living in a van down by the river.

After a stressful week, I am really looking forward to a run through the woods drinking lots of beer by the campfire and becoming one with nature.  Lots of pics when I return!

Almost Got Arrested in Wal-Mart

After reading my Publix post from the other day, a friend reminded me about another incident at Wally World when I was asked to refrain from taking photos, which I had completely forgotten!  So, here’s a repost of a blast from the past off myspace blog from about two years ago.  Now, you know the real reason as to why I am a mom on the run. ;-)

Almost Got Arrested in Wal-Mart

Not really, but it’s a funny story!

Some moms and I from my mommy group are planning an Easter party. This week, each mom was asked to shop around and get ideas for cheap chachkas for the goodie bags for the kiddies. Wal-Mart had a great selection of stuff, items in lots of 6 or 8 for $1. I had my digital camera with me, so I started snapping photos of some of the merchandise. What a great idea, right?

WRONG!  With in seconds, my daughters and I were swarmed by Wal-Mart security and one of the gentlemen asks me, “Why are you taking photos in the store, Ma’am?”

In a panicked voice, I reply, “I’m on an Easter Party Committee and I’m just getting ideas for some goodie bags to share with the other moms.”

One of the security guys speaks into a walkie-talkie, “It’s o.k. She’s on an Easter party committee.” And then speaks to me, “I’m going to ask you to stop taking photos in the store.”

“Please don’t confiscate my camera.”

“I’m not going to take your camera. Just stop taking photos, Ma’am.”

Speaking back into the walkie-talkie, “I asked her to stop.”

“O.k. I will”, I replied.  ”Boy! You guys work fast. I only got a couple photos anyway!”

“Thank you, Ma’am. Just don’t take anymore photos and have a nice day!” He speaks into the walk-talkie, “We’re leaving now.” And then, they left.

Emmalynn was screaming the entire time. Allana shouting, “MOMMY, I HAVE TO USE THE POTTY!”

So, I guess I’m on some Wal-Mart watch list now. They probably zoomed in with their security cameras and took my photo. They probably thought I was planning some moms’ group heist. SAHM by day; Wal-Mart thief by night.

Some Bunny to Love

The other day, my friend Nicole noticed a butt and legs hanging on my cupboard door.  I absolutely love this craft and my girls and I make these bunnies every Easter.

I have each girl sit on a stretch of banner paper and trace their legs and bum.  The legs form the bunny ears and their backside becomes the bunny’s head.  Then, they add their own details for the bunny’s features.  Pipe cleaners make great whiskers.

Isn’t it cute?

Fishful Thinking and a Gift Card Giveaway

I have plunged into the Fishful Thinking campaign.  The belief behind Fishful Thinking is an idea all parents should digest.

From the Fishful Thinking Campaign:

All parents want their kids to be happy and successful. Kids should have the chance to achieve whatever they want in life. Unfortunately, only 42% of kids believe that they will be able to achieve their goals.  The Goldfish® brand cares about kids and wants to help inspire them to become the successes they were born to be. Through the Fishful ThinkingSM program, Goldfish provides parents with tools to help teach their kids how to navigate obstacles, overcome failure and achieve what they want.

The Fishful Thinking program provides the tools parents need to teach their kids how to think optimistically about themselves and how to use their Optimism to overcome life’s obstacles, persist in the face of adversity, and transform setbacks into manageable challenges. By teaching kids Optimism today, we are equipping them with the skills and strategies they can rely on to shine in the face of adversity for the rest of their lives.

As parents raising two young girls, my husband and I strive to teach our children to believe in themselves and anything is possible.  We lead by example by keeping a positive attitude on life and being highly driven while remaining optimistic.  As well as modeling an optimistic outlook, we also give our girls the tools to help them through life’s little challenges.  For myself, whether it’s training for races, dreaming to be a published writer or organizing a drama free mommy group, I believe I have modeled to my girls that no dream is too big or small and your life is blessed when you believe you are worthy of it.

Fishful Thinking supports my parenting philosophy and my approach to life.  If your  parenting approach is full of Fishful Thinking or you need add more Fishful Thinking into your parenting style, then I encourage you to visit the site and join the campaign with me.

British Invasion

My DH and I were so excited to find our favorite favourite British goods stocked at the new Publix near our home.  This could be very dangerous.

Did you know supermarkets do not like you taking pictures of their merchandise?  The store manager quickly informed me of this policy right after I snapped my picture of the fully stocked shelves.  I explained to him that I was just excited to find Yorkshire Tea, Heinz Baked Beans, Maltesers and Mushy Peas without having to go to a speciality shop shoppe.  He didn’t seem to share my enthusiasm.
