Let Them Eat Cake

For Valentine’s Day, my DH and daughters wanted to bake a cake for me.  They asked what flavor I fancied and I requested a Devil’s Food cake with cream cheese icing.

As lovely as this gesture was, it was also the worst gift anyone could ever give a pregnant mama.

I’ve been so good so far during this pregnancy.  I’ve monitored my diet and despite my insatiable appetite for sweets, I have been able to limit my candy and cake consumption.  Occasionally, I’ll nibble on a few pieces of dark chocolate or savor a small scoop of ice cream.

At my last OB visit a week before Valentine’s Day, I only gained 11 pounds in 16 weeks.  My OB praised me on my efforts to gain a modest amount of weight and encouraged me to keep up good work.

But then the following week, this hideous crack cake little slice of heaven entered my home.

On Valentine’s Day, I enjoyed a small slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The next night, I devoured three slices.  I ate a small slice in front of the children after dinner, but like a serial closet eater, I inhaled two larger helpings of cake after I put the girls to bed and then I washed it down with a big bowl of vanilla ice cream.

The next night served a similar scene.

On the third night, my guilt got the best of me and I only ate one supersized slice, but the cake taunted me for the rest of the evening.  To avoid the temptation of eating more cake, I went to bed but somehow that cake willed me to wake up in the middle of the night.  Like a junkie, I craved more cake. I quietly crept into the kitchen only to discover that my husband finished off the rest of the cake.  In the end, he robbed me of my fix saved me from another sinful situation.

Damn that, Devil’s Food Cake!  I’ve probably sealed my fatty fate with so many nights of sinful indulgence, but heaven forbid!  Next time, I’ll request something high in fiber, like a Bran Flake cake.

Ha ha! Too funny!!! I am not pregnant but am trying to eat better. I had a similar situation with my sons birthday cake recently. I loved it and hated it at the same time. 🙂 We threw it out last night and now I can get back to business!

I know what you mean. Same thing happened to me with my first two pregnancies. As soon as the plus sign became visible, I began to expand. I gained 90 pounds with my first and only 40 pounds with my second. I’m aiming for something under 30 this time around. *fingers crossed*

You gain weight in your butt and hips? That is SO nice. Boys like that. And I just heard Dr. Oz say this morning that hip and butt is the best place to have excess weight for health reasons…. so I am trying not to hate : )

I love cake. Sad, but true!

you sound just like me and my m&m problem. 🙂 i mean i walked to the convenient store in less-than-20* weather to get m&m’s at 9pm not long ago… sigh. it is a tough battle!

Of all the horrid things my OB’s made me endure both times I was PG, they never said anything about my weight. And I gained it like , a metric ton at a time. I think that having “marathon runner” in my charts helped a lot.

So, enjoy it. And if you gain 20 lbs in a month like I did, but lied about it, so what?

You are a hotmofobadass and it will all be good~

Pregnancy is the one time you can have your cake and eat it too. As long as you don’t gain 50 pounds, you should be able to crank out the jogging stroller and run it off in no time. Breastfeed, too, and your post baby bod will be smokin’ in less than six months!

LOL!!! Darn those sweets that constantly call out our name! My weakness is brownies and I’ve learned to whip up a homemade batch in minutes. Appreciate you stopping by to say hi! Happy Saturday Sharefest!

It does look quite tasty. Sweets weren’t my pregnancy thing so much as the salty snacks. So, a bag of chips would have totally done me in.

Once on a prenatal checkup my sugar tested very high. The nurse asked what I had for breakfast. At first I refused to tell her and just said, “I’m embarassed to say.”
She started listing junk foods. I said, “It wasn’t sugary, just gross.” Eventually she got me to admit it was tuna casserole. The leftovers were taunting me!

I am freaking out that I didn’t know you were pregnant.

That cake looks delicious. I can see why you couldn’t eat just one piece.

I try not to bake b/c I end up eating WAY too much.

Great article, thank you. I am very interested in finding a diet that lowers my sugar intake. I currently have a sweet-tooth, and am finding it difficult to find meal plans, what to eat for snacks, etc. While diabetes is not something that runs in my family, I am still concerned and would like to be smart and take a proactive approach to my health.
