Day and Night

I have two races this week.  The first race, Oldsmar 5K, is on Friday evening.  The second race, Rap River Run, is on Saturday morning.  In other words, I’m running day and night.

The Oldsmar 5K is formerly the Taphouse Run.  The name may have changed, but the race and the goal haven’t.  We’re still running for beer.

Now, more serious runners shy away from running two races back-to-back, especially one that is early the next morning following a beer run.  But if you’ve read this blog for a while, you know I’m not like most runners.  I run happy and snappy.  I run for a good time, not the best time.

Besides, I’ll be running Rap River with my two daughters, Allana and Emmalynn, which makes Rap River more of a recovery run (a new term that I learned from my blogger runner friend, Jill).  A recovery run is a shorter, slower pace run within 24 hours after a harder, more intense run and since I’m running the race with my girls, I’ll be running at a much slower pace.

But truthfully, there will be some really fast local rock stars at Rap River, like my friends Marcia, Tommy, Tara and Jackie.  I can’t even come close to their speed.  So why not make it a recovery run or just a fun run with my girls, right?

Honestly, I’m more nervous about my performance at the Oldsmar 5K rather than the Rap River Run, because I don’t feel prepared for it.  Other than speed work and drinking beer, I haven’t trained much for it.  Typically, to prepare for summer evening races and the evening heat, I like to squeeze a few evening training runs.  But with being sick for most of May and then playing nursemaid to my sick kids, finding time for evening runs never happened.

Hopefully the evening heat won’t be too bad and I’ll shave some seconds off my time from last year to finish under 30 minutes.  If not, there will be other evening races this summer and they’ll keep me training working day and night.

Can’t wait for Friday! I hope to finish under 30 min too. No Rap River for me though. My boys will be at my parents’ house and I need sleep. 😉

Best of luck on your races! I’m so glad I found your blog through Stacy Uncorked, because I am trying to motivate myself to start the Couch to 5K program again. I was doing it a while back not because I wanted to run races, but just to get in shape. Now I want to run the Warrior Dash this October, and need to start again. I have made a few playlists that keep me moving while walking/running, but I’m not sure if I have any day or night themed ones. I’ll either have to come back to this, or come back next week to participate.

You go girl, I wish I could be there to cheer you on. Don’t forget some pictures when you win the crown or is it a gold cup. Thanks for sharing your wonderful choices there my friend and have a great day!
