An #EarthFootwear Neighborhood Beautification Project

In conjunction with my Earth Footwear review and my role as an Earth Footwear Earth Day Ambassador, I was asked to host a neighborhood beautification project. In my review post, I mentioned that I planned to host our beautification Earth Day play date on “Bring Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” so that my older girls could be part of the beautification fun as well as play the role of a professional blogger/social media mom by tweeting and sharing photos on Instagram.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. Thunderstorms rolled in and forced my mommy friends and me to postpone our beautification play date to the next day. Sadly, it rained again on Friday and over the next few days. FINALLY the following Wednesday, blue skies appeared and our beatification plans were set into motion once again!

Before Mother Nature could change her mind, my mommy friends and I met at our neighborhood park. Since beautifying a neighborhood park requires energy and is best on a full belly, I made chocolate avocado pudding for the kids to create a healthier version of a traditional dirt cup. Martha Stewart’s chocolate avocado pudding recipe served as the base of the dirt cup healthy dessert.

Smashed 365 Chocolate sandwich cookie crumbles made the “dirt” topping for our pudding. Fresh organic strawberries and organic gummy worms completed the dirt cup.

The sneaky chef in me loved that the kids enjoyed the healthier pudding made with avocados, cocoa, vanilla and honey. The moms were even surprised by the taste too!

Once everyone finished their dirt cups, we repurposed the plastic cups and avocado seeds in an attempt to grow avocado trees. Fingers crossed the pits sprout!

As another take home goodie, I cut up egg cartons into four sections so the kids could plant a sunflower seed in each egg cup.

Now that their little hands were good and dirty, we dug holes around the tree beds and planted wildflower seeds. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on fun of sowing seeds.

We wrapped our neighborhood beatification project with picking up litter around the park, which quickly turned into an Amazing Race type scavenger hunt. The kids loved racing to find pieces of trash. Like my friend Sarah said, “Who knew picking up garbage could be so much fun?!” Talk about turning trash into treasures!

It was incredible how much trash the kids collected and even made trash collages with their paper bags to display their findings. After our trash art, we recycled the remaining plastic items and donated the one article clothing to charity.

In the end, our neighborhood beautification project was a tremendous success despite all the rain delays. Here’s to hoping all those Florida April showers will grow May flowers and help the native pollinators in our neighborhood!
