Matilda the Musical: An Enchanting Masterpiece

Disclosure: I received tickets to Matilda The Musical as opportunity through the Tampa Bay Bloggers and the Straz Center for the purpose of this review. The opinions shared are my own.

Back in my teaching days, there was always that one child that shined above the others, something so unique about him or her that captured your heart and enchanted you. Teachers have an innate ability to recognize potential in their students and with the right nurturing and love produce extraordinary results.

Handed with the unfortunate odds of being born to despicable parents, Matilda still believes she is something brilliant and extraordinary despite what her parents say. The opening number cleverly reminds us how most parents spend every waking moment doting over their children until they believe to be special snowflakes but in actuality really quite revolting and dull children.

MATILDA THE MUSICAL unfolds the dreary, dark but beloved Roald Dahl novel, Matilda, a childhood classic tale of a young girl who outsmarts and outwits her parents and the despicable headmaster, Miss Trunchbull. Miss Honey, Matlida’s teacher, recognizes Matilda’s exceptional talents and abilities and loves her unconditionally. Miss Honey’s love for Matilda sparks a spellbinding a happily ever after outcome.

This Tony-Award Winning musical delivers some very clever numbers that spell out a fantastic time. “Bruce” with clever timing and cadence serves a sweet nod to “One Singular Sensation” from A Chorus Line.

Revolting Children - Matilda The Musical

“When I Grow Up” beautifully choreographed on wooden swings reminds us of the simplistic dreams of children while unveiling that all dreams, big or small, are within our grasp whether we are flying high or down on our luck.

With larger than life characters and mesmerizing original numbers, MATILDA THE MUSICAL successfully brings to life all the elements that make Roald Dahl books such treasured classics and Mr. and Mrs Wormwood (Quinn Mattfeld and Cassie Selva) along with Miss Trunchbull (David Abeles) wickedly stole the show. The revolting, cringe-worthy name calling balanced with kind, lovable characters makes MATILDA THE MUSICAL an enchanting masterpiece.
