Celebrate the ’60s with SHOUT! The Mod Musical

Disclaimer: I received ticket to SHOUT! The Mod Musical in exchange for my review. All opinions shared are my own.

SHOUT! The Mod Musical makes a satirical statement on how five women may have navigated the 60s by unbuttoning the stiff starch shirt of the late 50s and hiking skirts to expose the coming of age of the modern woman of the ’60s.

Some of your favorite songs of the ’60s illustrate the love, friendships, sexual revolution, drug exploration and self-preservation each of the women – Red Girl, Yellow Girl, Orange Girl, Green Girl and Blue Girl face. Even by naming the characters “Girls” demonstrates how these young, naive characters grow into strong, self-aware women by the end of the 90-minute production.

SHOUT! The Mod Musical struck a personal chord with me during “To Sir With Love”, being the song chosen for the Father-Daughter dance at my wedding in 1999. I, myself, have grown into quite a strong woman over the past two decades while I have watched my father transform into a fragile old man living with dementia. Listening to the powerful vocals of Red Girl (Julia Rifino) sing such a beautiful and meaningful song brought tears to my eyes. While not the true intention for that number in SHOUT! The Mod Musical, that certainly hit me hard.
