{Girl Scouts} Run the World – Run 4 Respect

On Saturday, Allana’s Girl Scout Troop hosted an anti-bullying 5K fun run, “Run 4 Respect” to earn their Bronze Award.  Advertised and publicized solely by word of mouth, the inaugural event had 125 registered runners.

Over the past few months, the girls planned every aspect of the event: the route, the signage, their shirts, awards, finisher ribbons, refreshments and entertainment.

For the entertainment, there was a DJ, a bouncy castle, a face painter and a volunteer to make balloon animals, a first for any race I’ve attended!

Allana selected me to serve as a cheerleader along the course and I wore my green tutu just for the occasion.  I thought the color coordinated nicely with the Girl Scout’s t-shirts, but the color would also keep the runner’s spirits bright.

The troop invited Mrs. Universe, Kelly Lightburn, to emcee, present awards and speak to the crowd after the race about standing up to bullies and the importance of self-confidence.

The inaugural event was a huge success and it was evident the Girl Scouts worked very hard on their Run 4 Respect Fun Run from start to finish.

Gasparilla Expo 2013 {The Hunt for Booty}

I love the Gasparilla 8 On Your Side Health and Fitness Expo almost as much as I love the race.  For information, resources, networking and freebies, it’s as good as any big race expo I’ve attended.  Even with the absence of Nike and the Sports Authority at this year’s expo, there was still plenty of food to sample, loot to love and treasure to take home.

As soon as I entered the expo, I spotted my friend, Leigh Spann, the WFLA News Channel 8 Today Morning News Meteorologist.  Leigh introduced me to Rod Carter and boasted about my blog to him, so hopefully I have another new fan.

I just adore Leigh (If you don’t follower her on Twitter, you must because she engages with her followers by tweeting and following back.), but now I also have a special place in my  heart for Rod, because he is just as adorable, funny and witty as he appears on camera.  As I visited with Leigh and Rod, my friend, Kat from Sneakers and Fingerprints happened to walk by. Of course, it was a Kodak moment that couldn’t be missed.

After catching up with Kat, Leigh and my new friend, Rod, I located Chrissy, Jenny and Maribel.  Truth be told, they discovered Little Lion Man and I test driving some vehicles.  He loved climbing into the huge pick-up truck and pretending to drive us to the grocery store.

A few aisles over at the GoGo Squeez booth, I stumbled upon my friend and fellow Mom Squad mom, Marisa, or she calls us “The two tiniest people in Tampa.

Little Lion Man is such a fan of the stuff and he insisted on sucking down some GoGo Squeez on the spot.

He also enjoyed destroying doodling on Marisa’s bi-fold chalkboard.

I also chatted with the Iron Girl reps and told them how excited I and several of the Tampa Bay Bloggers are to be running the race in April.  After swapping  training strategies, past Iron Girl experiences and hopeful PRs for this year’s race, Sarah gave me a purple Iron Girl shirt.

Before we could leave the expo, Chrissy insisted I try on the shoes she loves by Orthaheel.  Just as Chrissy promised, they were so comfy and cute.  As much as I truly loved the look, style and comfort of the Orthaheel sandals, new shoes just aren’t in the budget at the moment no matter how cute or comfy, but I am definitely putting these Orthaheel sandals on my wish list and maybe some bunny will surprise me with a pair for Easter.

Just as were about to leave the expo, Chrissy, Jenny and I spotted the Instagram photo center presented by Publix and we couldn’t resist playing along and role playing.  With the canyon highway behind me, I felt a bit like Forrest Gump.  “Forest, why are you doing this?”  “I just felt like running.”

“Mama says they was magic shoes. They could take me anywhere.”

“From that day on, if I was going somewhere, I was running!”

Unlike Forrest and his box chocolates of life, we know exactly what we are going to get when we sign up for a Gasparilla race.  When it comes to Gasparilla Distance Classic and its expo, it’s all about the booty.

Turkey Cookie Craft

PhotobucketThanksgiving has come and gone and though most of my readers are focused on another a holiday in the midst of Black Friday frenzy, I wanted to share an edible turkey craft that I made with my seven year old’s class while Thanksgiving is still fresh on the brain digesting.  You will want to bookmark, pin and file away this edible turkey craft idea for next Thanksgiving.

After Halloween, I bought several bags of candy corn on clearance with the specific purpose to make some kind of edible craft with my kids.  Funny enough, as one of the homeroom moms, I was in charge of a craft for our Thanksgiving feast.

With a quick Google search, I tried to remember how to make an edible turkey with Oreo cookies, however, the Oreo turkeys I found weren’t exactly what I wanted.  So, I decided to combine a few of the ideas I found and I came up with this.

Of course, the kids gobbled up the fun.

Turkey Cookie Craft
Ingredients
Golden Double Stuff Oreos
Nutter Butter Bites
Harvest Mix Candy Corn
Pretzel sticks
1 tub of white icing
1 tube black decorating icing gel
1 tube red decorating icing gel

Directions
Gently add the turkey’s tail feathers by wedging in the four brown-colored candy corn into the Oreo middle between the two cookies.  (You could also gently remove the top cookie.)

For the turkey’s legs, snap one pretzel stick in half and gently add the sticks into the opposite end of the candy corn.  (If you pulled off top of the Oreo, add a small amount icing and reapply the cookie.)

Add a small amount of icing to backside of a Nutter Butter Bite and “glue” the cookie to Oreo.  Add a small amount of icing to a yellow candy corn and “glue” it to the mini Nutter Butter.

Using the black decorating icing gel, add two eyes.  Then, add a wattle using the red decorating icing gel.

Pretty Muddy, Pretty Dirrty and Pretty Fun

Pretty MuddyAh, dirrty (dirrty)
Filthy (filthy)
Nasty, you nasty (yeah)
Too dirrty to clean my act up
If you ain’t dirrty
You ain’t here to party (woo!)

What better way to recap the Pretty Muddy race than with a help from Christina Aguilera!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/4Rg3sAb8Id8?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0]

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, a mud run was never something I thought of trying.  Fear of over-the-top tests of endurance, electric fences and well…mud mostly steered me away from ever participating.  I had heard horror stories from friends who found mud in the nether regions for days after their mud run.

But when Courtney of Journey of a Dreamer challenged her fellow Sweat Pink Sisters to take on the Pretty Muddy, I simply had to go for it.  Who can resist a good challenge?

Obviously there were mass quantities of mud, but Pretty Muddy lacked an electrical fence which was a bonus for me.  Plus, there was a promise of beach balls and bubbles instead of bales of hay.  So with that, I would give it a go and I decided to make “Keep Calm and Get Pretty Muddy” my mantra.

The Friday before the event, a few fitness bloggers and I had the opportunity to preview the course.  I even tested out a few of the obstacles to see if I could even scale them.

Each obstacle offered a “pretty please pass”, however, for me to truly understand the whole mud run experience, I felt I had to at least attempt the obstacles even if it meant falling face down in the mud.  Either way, it would all make for a great blog post and interesting race recap.  Given my race number, I was doomed destined to have a hell of a time.

On race day, Jenny of Metamorfit and I started at the first wave at 8:00 a.m., which I now know was great strategy in itself.  Later I learned that some mud runs have long lines for each obstacle, but since not many people want to start at the first wave, there were no lines and no waiting for us.

I also learned that Pretty Muddy offers a lot more running than obstacles, which was perfect for a mother runner like me.  I loved running through the gorgeous grounds of the Little Everglades Ranch and I managed the soft terrain of the farm quite nicely.

At the start of the race, we ran through bubbles and I lost Jenny somewhere in the foam.  Very soon after the bubbles, we plunged into a pond and my soggy pond-soaked shoes felt 10 pounds apiece.  Once back on the trail, I wrung out my shoes with every squishy step.

Soon enough, my shoes were all wrung out just in time for the first mud pit positioned in front of a barn.  With my first step into the mud pit, I learned there is a strategy for stepping into mud pits.  Per my mistake, I stepped in too close to the edge and I couldn’t move my feet.  I had to pull my foot out and start over with a giant step forward. Giant step right! Giant step left!  Grab hold of the opposite edge and PULL yourself out!

Just after the barn was an obstacle I like to call, “What Wood Jesus Do?”  Since I didn’t know the best way to attack this 2×4 wood carrying obstacle, I chose to carry my plank crucifixion style (over the back of my neck and across my shoulders) while I ran.

Past the planks, we found a huge inflatable slide with a pool of mud at the base rather than water.  Just after the slide and close to the 1.5 mile mark, I could hear the M.C. calling for the 8:15 wave to start and I knew I was making good time.

Around the bend just after the slide, there stood a cargo net to climb. Then, after another short run, I crawled through two tunnels full of mud, which made me feel a little claustrophobic.  Thankfully, I was off running again.

After a short distance, I had to scale the over and out obstacle.  I climbed over one, crawled under one into a pit of mud, back over another and under once again in yet another pit of mud.  Then, I was back on my way, but in the wrong direction.  I ran about a quarter mile off the trail when a sheriff on ATV cashed me down and told me and a few other ladies to go back the other way.

Once back on the right path, I bounced through beach balls and then shortly after that, I had to maneuver through the rope netting of the “get a leg up” obstacle, which included more mud of course.

The last mile led us back toward the start where only two more obstacles remained.  With only a little distance left to go, I had a few more wooden walls to climb.  Once over the walls, I ran as fast as I could up a slight incline to the finish line.   But first, there was one more mud pit to crawl through, which is where most of my mud damage happened.

Even with all the obstacles, I finished somewhere around 35:00, which I think is pretty excellent for someone with no previous crossfit experience.  Besides running, the only training I did to prepare for this race is climbing a playground apparatus at the park with my two year old son.  Honestly, I thought I lacked the upperbody strength for such an event, but I am in better shape than I thought.

So would I do it again?  Abso-pretty-lutley!

I am so on board for Pretty Muddy again next year!  I loved the endurance race adventure run without all the competitive pressure of a clock or all-star athletes.  Pretty Muddy was good wholesome, down and dirty fun.

Next year, I would love for my runner mother girlfriends to join me because I could have used a hand in that barn dance mud pit.  Plus, it would be fun to be part of a team with matching shirts and a team motto.   Of course, I’ve already got a ton of team ideas floating around in that Pretty Muddy brain of mine.

So who’s with me?

Ladies, please don’t fear the mud because it washes off better than you’ve heard!  Think of it more of a mud bath spa experience minus the sliced cucumbers on your eyes and a bit more climbing.

*A special thanks to Courtney for roping me into Pretty Muddy and for sharing her photos with me!*

Ground Turkey Tacos

PhotobucketI’ve included Ground Turkey Tacos a few times in my weekly Sunday menu planning feature, Pinning and Planning , but after making my tacos this week, it dawned on me that I should share my taco recipe.  See, I don’t make your typical taco kit tacos.

For most families, tacos are a quick family favorite, kid-approved dinner, but most people use taco seasoning packets located in the ethnic aisle of a supermarket.  Just to be clear, you’re not saving any time or your health using packaged seasonings.  If you’re using a package to make your tacos, you need to stop that immediately and here’s why.  Below are the ingredients for the top two taco seasonings.

El Paso  – “Maltodextrin, salt, chili pepper, onion powder, spice, monosodium glutamate, corn starch, yellow corn flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, silicon dioxide (anticaking agent), natural flavor, ethoxyquin (preservative)”

OretegaYellow Corn Flour, Salt, Maltodextrin, Paprika, Spices, Modified Corn Starch, Sugar, Garlic Powder, Citric Acid, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Natural Flavor, Caramel Color (sulfites).

In case you weren’t aware, Autolyzed Yeast Extract is code for MSG.

As for taco shells, my favorite are the Garden of Eatin’ Yellow Corn Taco Shells.  They typically cost about a dollar more than the popular taco shell brands, however, they do not contain any hydrogenated oil.  Plus, they have a deliciously strong, real, rich corn taste, which should come as no surprise when you read the ingredients.

“Organic stoneground yellow corn masa flour, expeller pressed high oleic safflower and/or sunflower oil.”

Now, promise me that you will start making healthier tacos by following my recipe.  If you can’t find healthy taco shells, that’s all right.  At least with these MSG-free turkey tacos, you’re moving in the right direction.

Ground Turkey Tacos

Ingredients
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 lb lean ground turkey
2 garlic cloves, minced
½ onion (Spanish, red or white), chopped
1 Tbsp chili powder
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp salt
½ tsp ground black pepper
1 cup Pomi chopped tomatoes
Garden of Eatin’ Yellow Corn Taco Shells

For toppings
Romaine lettuce, shredded
Vine ripe tomatoes, diced
Reduced fat cheddar cheese
Reduced fat sour cream
Lindsay’s Natural Sliced Ripe Black Olives

Directions
On a low to medium setting, heat olive oil in a large skillet.  Add onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes.  Add garlic and sauté for about a minute.

Add ground turkey and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring and breaking it up until white.  Add spices, salt and pepper and stir for about a minute.  Add tomatoes.

Prepare tacos are directed on box.

Serve the meat and  all the toppings family-style in bowls for everyone to make their own tacos.

Random Thoughts about a Purple Run, Pretty Muddy, peerFit, Planks and Track Tuesday

This Thursday, my Suncoast Strider family and I will run a purple 10K for the Wear Purple Virtual Run to Cure Epilepsy.  I am so grateful for the Suncoast Strider’s support for this cause and my niece, Meghan.  The support and kindness from strangers moved my SIL, Kirsten, to tears. Expect a full race recap soon!

This Saturday is the Pretty Muddy.  I tried to find vendors to sponsor my Tampa Bay Blogger team with some Pretty Muddyfun camouflage running skirts but sadly, that didn’t happen.  Maybe next time?  *Hint…hint…to any vendors reading this post.*

Since costumes are encouraged for this event, I thought I would wear my Race for Cure ensemble.  I hated running in that tutu because it was so dang hot and I could care less if I ruin it in the mud.  To save my legs from getting torn up on the ropes, I’ll wear running capris underneath the pink tutu and a pink/black top to match. Of course, a black top may not show off all the mud like a lighter color would, but I really don’t want to ruin my other tops.

In preparation for the Pretty Muddy, my fellow runner girl bloggers and I will preview the course at the Little Everglades Ranch this Friday.  I’m really nervous about the all the mud and the obstacles, but still super excited about the event.  Plus, I finally get to meet Courtney of Journey of a Dreamer, who has been a long time Run DMT reader and coordinated so many pre-Pretty Muddy events here in Tampa.

Also, this weekend is the peerFit meetup in Hyde Park.  I’m excited about that too because it sounds like a lot of fun!  If you’re in the ‘hood on Sunday, come on by!

As for my marathon training, last week was a wasted week with Halloween and Allana’s birthday.  I only ran twice last week.  At least I got my 16 miles in and lived to tell about it and thankfully, I have not experienced any plantar fasciitis pain since I replaced my shoes.  *knock on wood*

I was also grateful that I didn’t have to run 16 miles alone. Chrissy, Maribel and Larisa ran with me in my neighborhood and I thanked them with a runner’s tailgate (a cooler full of orange slices, bananas, water, Gatorade, coconut water and chocolate milk).

Even with all the twists and turns through my neighborhood,  everyone survived with only a few complaints. lol But more importantly, it was Chrissy and Maribel’s LE and they did GREAT!  I am so proud of those girls!!!

This morning, I did my usual speedwork, however, my Garmin was dead because someone (probably me) unplugged the charging station from my computer’s USB port, which totally blows.  I have no idea how I performed this morning, but I did do sprints.  You’ll just have to take my word on it.  I’m sure I rocked it. HA!

While you’re taking my word on my fitness achievements, I’m doing planks every day, three times a day and you can too by signing up here.

How about you?  Did you do sprints?  With Halloween, did you have a wasted week too?

To join our Track Tuesday linky party, do your speed work (at least 4 quarter mile sprints) on Tuesday or any day you that works best for you, blog about your times and remember to add our cool Track Tuesday button to your post.  Then, link up your post at either Ricole Runs or Run DMT to share Track Tuesday Speed Work Sessions.  To show support for our other virtual running partners on the Track Tuesday Team, be sure to visit the other blogs listed in the linky party.  Give them a virtual high-five and leave some comment love too.

Two Tribes and Yes, We Can

Like many Americans, I will be so glad when this election is over, however, I don’t believe it will end tomorrow at midnight.  With the popular vote being so close, I predict many states will call for a recount and America will be waiting for weeks to learn the name of our next president.  I also predict that Obama will win the electoral vote nationally but Romney will take Florida based upon a quote printed in the Tampa Bay Times from former Governor Jeb Bush:  “As Pasco goes, so does the state of Florida.”

It’s been such an ugly election and possibly even worse living in the swing state of Florida in the I-4 Corridor but the ugliness wasn’t limited to the TV or radio airwaves.  The spew of negativity and discontent from either side has been plastered all over my Facebook newsfeed.  I had several liberal friends complaining about Obama signs being stolen from their yards, however, ironically no Romney friends reported any such acts but perhaps not so surprisingly since Romney held a rally here last Saturday.

Then I spotted a defaced Obama sign outside my early polling precinct.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/s6-2b_3Dmxw?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0]

On Saturday, the last day of early voting, I waited in an hour and a half to cast my vote for Obama in sea of Romney supporters wearing buttons and t-shirts.  I should have worn my Obama tube socks.

Four years later, I’m still an Obama Mama.  Yes, Mr. President, I’m ready to move forward, past all the ugly partisan politics and get back to work fixing the economy and making America prosperous again.

Yes, we can.

Sweat Pink Blog Swap: How to Be a Mom on the Run

My Sweat Pink Sister, Jill of Fitness, Health and Happiness, arranged a Sweat Pink Blog Swap where a handful of Sweat Pink Ambassadors would write guest posts for each other.  Jessica of Keeping Mommy Sane and I were paired up the Sweat Pink Blog Swap.

Much like me, Jessica is a mom on the run trying to raise a family between training for races.  In this great big blogosphere, it’s comforting to know another mother runner is going through many of the same experiences as me. However, I’ll let Jessica explain how she fits running into her very busy working mom world.  Thank you, Jessica!

Hello! My name is Jessica and I blog over at Keeping Mommy Sane. I am so excited to be paired with Denise for our Sweat Pink Ambassador blog swap because it turns out we have a lot in common: we’re both busy moms who try to carve out time for exercise each day. Yet Denise still manages to find time to train for, and complete, several marathons. She is a rock star! I honestly don’t know how she does it.

So here’s my a little about me: I work full-time, I have a 6-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter, a husband who travels frequently for work, and a 30 minute work commute here in the Boston area. Needless to say, my days are carefully choreographed from sunrise to sundown, with daycare drop-offs and work meetings and karate lessons and picking up from after-school programs. So if I want to exercise, I have to be strategic.

For me, this means getting up at 4:45am (when it’s usually still pitch dark outside) and heading to the gym, which – thankfully – is literally a 3 minute drive from my house. I’m not going to lie: it is extremely hard some mornings to drag myself out of my warm and cozy bed (especially in the dead of winter), pull on my gym clothes and head out the door. I’d say about 95% of the time I have to convince myself why I need go and why I can’t crawl back into bed. After 3 years of this schedule, that part hasn’t gotten any easier.

But I do it, because here’s the reality: after work, all I want to do is spend time with my kids. I only get a few precious hours with them at night and I want to enjoy each and every minute. If I head to the gym, that basically means I won’t really see much of them that day. And that’s not even getting into all the prep work that has to be done at night: making lunches, checking backpacks, packing snacks, signing permission slips. Plus, it is a really nice feeling knowing you got your workout out of the way before your day has even begun.

So that’s why I force myself to join my fellow “5am-ers,” as we call ourselves, for spin class and Body Pump and bootcamp. There definitely is camaraderie there; maybe it’s because we know we’re all in the same boat. We’re all busy women trying to take care of ourselves and our loved ones as best we can.

Of course, there are some downsides to working out so early. I often require a cup of coffee around 2pm to get through the rest of the day, I’m dead tired by 8:30pm and I still haven’t quite figured out to have a good run so early in the morning, especially since I find it hard to stomach any food at 4:45am. But the trade-offs are definitely worth it.

Thankfully, the weekends usually afford a little more flexibility, and that’s when I try to work in my long runs and races. After having my daughter last June, I’ve really begun to focus on running – mostly 5Ks and 10Ks. However, I’m getting ready to sign up for my first half marathon in March (an item on my “before I turn 40” bucket list). When I was first mulling this over, I kept asking myself the same question:  How the heck am I going to fit half marathon training into my crazy schedule?

But then I realized it’s really no different than getting up every morning at 4:45am. I do that because staying fit and healthy is important to me. So if running the half means a lot to me (and it does), then I will just have to find a way to do it, whether than means running on my lunch break or finally figuring out how to have a good early morning run. It’s not going to be easy, and I know I’ll probably hit some of life’s obstacles and roadblocks along the way, and that’s okay. But the idea of showing my kids – and myself — what commitment and hard work can do is a powerful motivator.  I don’t want them to see me quit or give up just because “it’s hard” or “I don’t have the time.” And I hope that will be the push I need to get over the finish line and finally call myself a “half marathoner.”

Crock Pot Turkey White Bean Pumpkin Chili

PhotobucketThis week I was a sneaky chef.  When I made Skinnytaste’s Crock Pot Turkey White Bean Pumpkin Chili, I didn’t tell my kids there was pumpkin in the chili.  I added sour cream to hide the evidence and watched my kids stir the condiment into their bowls happily without a clue.  After all, we always add sour cream to the kids’ chili to mask the heat.

“This is really good, but it tastes different,” my oldest observed when she tasted it.

“You like it?”

She nodded.

Good.  And then like clockwork, my youngest daughter bolted off to the restroom, because she always needs to pee right in the middle of dinner.

Once she left the table, I asked my oldest again, “Do you really like it?”

“Yes, why?”

“I just want to make sure you really like it.”

“I do, but why?”

“Because there’s pumpkin in the chili.  Not like pumpkin pie pumpkin, but a pumpkin puree like a mashed up pumpkin.”

“Really?  Because this is good!”

“It is, isn’t it?  But don’t tell Emmalynn!”

Allana relished in our little secret.  Once Emmalynn returned to the table, Allana questioned her about the chili.  “This chili is really good, isn’t it Emma?”  She asked with devilish grin.

“Yes, it is really good!  We need to eat this every week!”

Sounds like a plan to me.

Actually, I was pretty surprised as to how good this chili turned out to be.  I had my doubts, but deep down inside, I knew my Gina (a.k.a. Skinnytaste) wouldn’t let me down.

Besides being chock full of vitamins and minerals (vitamins A, C, E, and K, magnesium and potassium), it’s the perfect fall comfort food that’s so simple from start to finish.  And because it’s a crock pot meal, it’s the perfect quick healthy dinner to have prepared and ready to serve before a long night of trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Halloween Problem (Monster)

Halloween will be a three part party this year.  Part one starts this Saturday evening with our adult Halloween party.  Part two and three take place next weekend with the kids’ Halloween party for my mom’s group followed by the Living Dead Challenge (5K and half-marathon race).

Allan and I stepped up to be this year’s ghost hosts with the most for the adult Halloween party.  In preparation for the party, I’ve been searching and scrolling through Pinterest to find frugal, fun ideas for food and decorating.  At this point, I need to channel the ghost of Julia Child because I would love to make a graveyard cake, witch fingers or some other spooky snack, but I don’t think I will have time.

But more importantly, I still need to throw my costume together.  I ordered Allan’s sushi chef costume the other day, but I am still trying to find all the necessary pieces for my sushi costume.  I didn’t have any luck at Goodwill the other day, but I plan to stop in again this week.

And I’ll need to do all that between doctor visits, preparing a fall festival basket to be raffled off at my kids’ school, packing for a camping trip and running 12 miles on top of all the usual business such as homework, dinner, after school activities, etc.

As you can see, I have so much going on right now.  The Halloween party is just the monster problem escape I need and a perfect excuse to drink have fun with my friends.
