An Encounter with the Penguin

An encounter with the Penguin may sound like a bad Batman episode, but it is no exaggeration to how I briefly met John Bingham, the well-known slow-runner and author nicknamed The Penguin for his “waddling pace”.

As stealth-like as I could with a screaming toddler strapped in a stroller in tow, I discreetly tried to snap photos of The Penguin during his lecture on flexibility vs. stretching at the St. Pete Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon expo.

Unfortunately, the rude repeated clicking broke his speaking stride and then he snapped. “Why are you taking photos?”

“Um…because you’re The Penguin and I’ve quoted you on my blog,” I sheepishly replied.

“You blog?  What’s your blog?  Will you blog this?”

“Of course!”

“Well, then let’s get a photo together!”

With that invitation, I tossed my camera to my friend, Chrissy, to capture this beautiful blogoturnity.

Thank you, Mr. Penguin, sir.

Random Thoughts about a Swelled Head, a Shrinking Waist and a Princess Problem

Marathon TrainingIn the past few weeks, Run DMT has been spotlighted on several websites and it’s giving me a big head.

Marathon Training Schedule compiled a list of top running blogs and Run DMT is #64.  Then, RN Central.com  shared 50 Inspiring Blogs for Your Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss and Run DMT is #5 on the list.  How exciting is that?!

I’m flattered to be considered an “inspiration” to others for post-partum weight-loss and I hope yours is going better than mine because I’m sill struggling to lose the last of my baby weight 19 months later. What’s that old pregnancy rule of thumb for weight-loss? Nine months up, nineteen months down?  That sounds about right.

Five unflattering pounds are still sticking around from my pre-pregnancy weight but I don’t put a whole heck of a lot of value on the scale since most of my old clothes are fitting me.

So the numbers on the scale are not dropping but I am definitely toning and shrinking inches, thanks to our Love My Abs Challenge.  If you haven’t been following along, you should go over there RIGHT NOW and check it out!  Each week, I’ve been sharing photos and a brief recap of my progress.

Tomorrow, we’re moving onto to Week 4 and 200 reps, but it’s not too late to join in the fun.  Even if you fell off the wagon, you can simply start over at 100 reps at Week 1. It’s not about how many reps or how long, but more about making a commitment to a better you.

Speaking of wagons, I will be catching a carriage ride over to Orlando this weekend for the Disney’s Princess Half Marathon.  I don’t feel prepared at all for this race, but it has nothing to do with training.  I still haven’t figure out what to wear!

Should I be Belle or Tiana?

Both princesses are equally smart, brave, fearless, beautiful and good role models for my girls (next to their mom, of course).  But…
If I dress as Belle, I’ll wear a yellow running skirt, matching yellow top, a tiara and carry a red rose.

If I dress as a Tiana, I’ll wear a green top, green shorts and a magnolia rhinestone hair clip in my hair.  I wanted to find a green tutu to wear over my shorts, but I haven’t had any luck yet.

As any stylish, runner (a.k.a stunner ) will tell you, tiaras and tutus are a must for any Disney Princess race.  I think what I wear will be a game time decision, but I would love to hear your vote: Belle or Tiana?

The girls have the Gasparilla Jr. Race on Saturday. Next year, Liam will be old enough to run the Gasparilla Jr with Emmalynn, but this is Allana’s last year to run it as she’s getting too old for it now.  The thought of it makes me all melancholy, but she’s moving on to bigger distances with her mom.

And who knows maybe she’ll run a Princess race with me someday.  Then she can be Belle and I’ll be Tiana!  There. Problem solved.  Hopefully, by then I would have found a green tutu or made one or bought one of these shnazzy sparkly skirts.  A runner mom can dream, can’t she?  Like a wise mouse once told me, “If you dream it, you can do it.”

And now for my running stats!

I suffered from a stomach bug for two days after the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon, but I think the forced rest helped me run under 30 minutes for the first time in nearly a year.

Connecting with Tampa Bay Bloggers Offline

Saturday evening, thirteen Bay area bloggers met at The Pub to share, connect and meet the bloggers behind the blogs.  Some had met before and some were anxious to meet for the first time.

As a guest, I was looking forward to seeing Raffi of Running Betty, Brian of Digital Running, Maria of Mommy Melee and Angel of Cheeky Sweetie again.

My sisters-in-law Karen of If I Could Escape and Kirsten of Gone Bananas attended the event as well as our friend Susie of Hide ‘N Go Scrap.

But I was really excited meet Caroline of Morningside Mom, Erika of Southern Fried Lives and Clarisa of TBO for the first time.

As host and organizer of the event, I wanted the evening to be worthwhile as well as fun.  We started the evening with an ice breaker to judge how well we recognized faces from blogs.

Then, our guest, speaker, Chris Angulo of Vology Data Systems, shared some quick tips on how to optimize our blogs with branding and key terms.  He also briefly mentioned Google+ and how it will change the social media platform and connectivity.  (Now, if only I could get an invite to be part of the 25,000,000 exclusive club beta users to learn more about it!)

To combat the noise level in the restaurant, I had people moving and mingling to share what they learned.

All that was well and good, but I think it was the swag that stole the night.  Seriously, the swag was awesome!

Prior to the event, I posted a request on Facebook and my friends HOOKED ME UP with some rocking chackas for the swag bags, like lip balm and pens from Suncoast Running, haircuts from blo Hair Studio & Color Cafe, stainless steel, travel mugs from Florida Title Services.  Not to mention free food coupons from evos, Chick-fil-a  and California Pizza Kitchen and a bottle of mango mix1 to wash it all down.  A big THANK YOU to all the business that contributed items for the bags!

Although the swag bags were sweet, the real treasure was meeting everyone.  I can’t wait to do it all again in March.  Hopefully, I can get some sweet swag bags together again pull it all off again.

I’m Sweet and Stylish

Did you know that I’m sweet and stylish?

Well, I am and I’ve got these awards to prove it!  Cathy thinks I’m sweet and that’s rich!  I’m more of a sweet outer layer covering a nutty center.

But Becelisa thinks I’m stylish and I think I wear that one well too.

By accepting these awards, I must state 7 lesser known facts about myself.

  1. I love pajamas days when I just stay in my pajamas all day.  I plan at least one a week.
  2. I don’t know what I want to be when I grown up.  In my life B.C. (before children), I taught elementary school, mostly third through fifth grade.  Sometimes I miss it, but then I think about lesson plans, grading papers, parent conferences, Sunshine State Standards and all the other political nonsense and stress involved with education these days and I don’t miss one bit.  I will happily change shitty diapers than deal with that bullshit.
  3. When I’m anxious or nervous or have a lot on my mind, I pick and bite my cuticles until they bleed.  It’s a really disgusting habit.
  4. I don’t like country music.
  5. I talk through movies, which annoys the piss out of my husband.  Over the years, I’ve learned to stay silent in the cinema and save all questions and observations until after the show.
  6. I laugh like a Pez dispenser. When I experience a good gut busting laugh, I tilt my head back and my mouth pops open with the loudest, most boisterous juiceful laugh you will ever hear.  Sometimes it’s followed up with a snort too.
  7. I often fit lines from movies, shows or pop culture references into every day conversation. I’m cool like dat.

Now the conditions of these awards also state that I must pass them along to fellow bloggers.  So in no particular order, I present the “Sweet” award to 10 of my favorite sweeties…

Random Thoughts about being 40 and Pinkalicious

For this week’s RTT, I wanted to do a vlogWhy not?  I don’t believe there are any rules about that.  Besides, it’s my birthday tomorrow and I am turning 40, therefore I get to make the rules.  So, I decided to make a vlog and poke a little fun at myself.  All while wearing a pink tiara, of course.  If you’re wondering about the whole “KICK…STRETCH…KICK” bit, it’s a reference to a SNL sketch starring Molly Shannon as Sally O’Malley.

And to keep in the true spirit of a RunDMT RTT post, I’m sharing my latest running stats.  God Lord.  It’s been so ridiculously hot out lately.  I’ve even tried starting at 5:00 a.m. to beat the heat, but there’s no escaping it.  Running in July is just not fun.  Hopefully, my pace will improve once the weather cools.

Join the VCA Pawfect Twitter Party!

VCA Animal HospitalI swore off owning pets for years.  Then we rescued a lost dog in our neighborhood and we found ourselves pet owners when our girls begged us with their own puppy dog eyes to get a dog.

For weeks, I hunted rescue sites, called the local animal shelters and then searched through Craigslist until we found our Lucy, a black Pomeranian.  When we adopted Lucy, she was a fluffy disaster with dandruff, knotted fur and a scruffy coat.  We changed her diet and within a week, she had sheen to her coat and a spring in her step.  Of course, being responsible pet owners, we had her chipped, spayed and groomed.

These days, our filthy Craigslist outcast looks like a completely different dog.  All due in part to the quality care and love she received.

My belief about feeding our pet the best quality food and providing her with best possible care is no secret. I only feed my family the best foods and give them the best care therefore, our pet ( an extension of our family) should only receive the same treatment.

In fact, my strong opinions on the matter are what prompted Stiletto Media to contact me to participate in their first Twitter Party.

Latina on a Mission in part with VCA Animal Hospital will be hosting a Twitter Party on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

As stated on the VCA homepage, their mission is the same as mine with regards to my pet: “Where your pet’s health is our top priority and excellent service is our goal.”  More about VCA Animal Hospitals:

VCA operates more than 540 animal hospitals in 41 states across the nation. These hospitals are staffed by more than 1,800 fully qualified, dedicated and compassionate veterinarians to give your pet the very best in medical care. Over 200 are board-certified specialists. Our hospitals provide a full range of general medical and surgical services as well as specialized treatments.

Visit VCA Animal Hospital to learn more about their services and to find a location near you.

As for the VCA Pawfect Twitter Party, pounce on Latina on a Mission  to RSVP and enter to win some pawfect prizes.  Then, be sure to follow yours truly, @denisermt , our party panelist, @VCApethealth and…

Also, “like” VCA Animal Hospitals on Facebook.

TOOT for Being a Featured Blogger!

I recently became acquainted with a new “running partner”, Lisa of Little Writer Momma, and we’ve become fast bloggie friends.  After visiting each other blogs and corresponding via e-mail, we learned that we share similar running stories.  Lisa appreciated my encouraging comments, novice knowledge and mommy runner support and then she asked if I would be willing to write a guest post to help other moms hurdle over some struggles they may be experiencing as a beginner runner.  Of course, I was happy to oblige.

On Monday, my guest post, Run Like a Mother, was featured on Lisa’s blog.  I would love for you visit Little Writer Momma to read my post and please leave a comment letting Lisa know I sent you.

Thanks in advance for your love and support! :-)
