Random Thoughts about a Swelled Head, a Shrinking Waist and a Princess Problem

Marathon TrainingIn the past few weeks, Run DMT has been spotlighted on several websites and it’s giving me a big head.

Marathon Training Schedule compiled a list of top running blogs and Run DMT is #64.  Then, RN Central.com  shared 50 Inspiring Blogs for Your Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss and Run DMT is #5 on the list.  How exciting is that?!

I’m flattered to be considered an “inspiration” to others for post-partum weight-loss and I hope yours is going better than mine because I’m sill struggling to lose the last of my baby weight 19 months later. What’s that old pregnancy rule of thumb for weight-loss? Nine months up, nineteen months down?  That sounds about right.

Five unflattering pounds are still sticking around from my pre-pregnancy weight but I don’t put a whole heck of a lot of value on the scale since most of my old clothes are fitting me.

So the numbers on the scale are not dropping but I am definitely toning and shrinking inches, thanks to our Love My Abs Challenge.  If you haven’t been following along, you should go over there RIGHT NOW and check it out!  Each week, I’ve been sharing photos and a brief recap of my progress.

Tomorrow, we’re moving onto to Week 4 and 200 reps, but it’s not too late to join in the fun.  Even if you fell off the wagon, you can simply start over at 100 reps at Week 1. It’s not about how many reps or how long, but more about making a commitment to a better you.

Speaking of wagons, I will be catching a carriage ride over to Orlando this weekend for the Disney’s Princess Half Marathon.  I don’t feel prepared at all for this race, but it has nothing to do with training.  I still haven’t figure out what to wear!

Should I be Belle or Tiana?

Both princesses are equally smart, brave, fearless, beautiful and good role models for my girls (next to their mom, of course).  But…
If I dress as Belle, I’ll wear a yellow running skirt, matching yellow top, a tiara and carry a red rose.

If I dress as a Tiana, I’ll wear a green top, green shorts and a magnolia rhinestone hair clip in my hair.  I wanted to find a green tutu to wear over my shorts, but I haven’t had any luck yet.

As any stylish, runner (a.k.a stunner ) will tell you, tiaras and tutus are a must for any Disney Princess race.  I think what I wear will be a game time decision, but I would love to hear your vote: Belle or Tiana?

The girls have the Gasparilla Jr. Race on Saturday. Next year, Liam will be old enough to run the Gasparilla Jr with Emmalynn, but this is Allana’s last year to run it as she’s getting too old for it now.  The thought of it makes me all melancholy, but she’s moving on to bigger distances with her mom.

And who knows maybe she’ll run a Princess race with me someday.  Then she can be Belle and I’ll be Tiana!  There. Problem solved.  Hopefully, by then I would have found a green tutu or made one or bought one of these shnazzy sparkly skirts.  A runner mom can dream, can’t she?  Like a wise mouse once told me, “If you dream it, you can do it.”

And now for my running stats!

I suffered from a stomach bug for two days after the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon, but I think the forced rest helped me run under 30 minutes for the first time in nearly a year.

Love My Abs Challenge, Week 3

If you’re just hearing about February’s Love My Abs Challenge for the first time, it’s not too late to join in the fun.  Basically, we started with a 100 dally ab exercises and tweeted about our achievements.  (This week we move up to 160 exercises.)  Then, each Wednesday, I’ll host a linky party for you to link up and share your recap post or add your Twitter handle.

That’s it.  Now sit-up and take action!  Show your abs some love this February!

Although I raised my reps to 140 this week, I didn’t try any new exercises.  With a half marathon only a few days away and to avoid injuring myself, I wanted to keep things simple and routine.  This week may have been less adventurous as far as ab exercises were concerned, but the results were pretty staggering nonetheless.

I think I see some abs forming there.

Day 9

60 crunches

40 bicycles

40 cross-over crunches

Day 10

40 cross-over crunches

On Day 14, the Plank Police hunted me down on Twitter and shamed me into doing some long forgotten planks.  It was only fair to show my abs some extra love on Valentine’s Day.

A week into the challenge and I’m already seeing a difference in my waist.  Although I didn’t measure myself with a tape measure at the start of the challenge, I would estimate that I have lost about an inch around my waist.  The real measure is the reduction of spillage over the top of my pants.  My muffin top is deflating.

No real ab muscles popping up yet, but I know there in there somewhere.  I’ll just keep at it.

Here’s a photo of my abs after one week and a rundown of the ab exercise I did this week.  I also learned about the #plankaday challenge via @runningmom2boys and @Amanda_Mowry,  so I’m plugging along with planks in that challenge too.

#LoveMyAbs – Week 1, Day 1

I don’t know if I’ll post every day of the challenge, but I’ll definitely tweet #lovemyabs every day to keep you up to speed with my progress and my daily ab exercises.

Since today is the official launch, I thought I would do a no holds barred post and put my abs out there for the whole blogosphere to judge see.

Here I am. Day 1:

Good lord.  I need a tan and a six-pack.  Hopefully in four weeks, I’ll have both.

As for my ab exercises, today I did 120 reps.

Janathon 2012 – Day 26

PhotobucketSo if you’ve been reading my blog throughout the Janathon, then hopefully you’ve not given up on me yet and my ridiculous wisdom extraction in the middle of the Janathon and stinky hole stories, then you know my Janathon experience hasn’t been very Janathonish.  These stupid steenky holes of mine have made it really difficult to do anything thanks to all the pain I’ve been feeling.

This morning was no different than any other morning over the past three weeks.  I woke up at 4:30 a.m. and my jaw was throbbing.  So, I popped 800mg of ibuprofen.  Fabulous.

It was another slow start morning waiting for the pain to subside, but today was slightly different.   A couple hours later, I felt good.  Really good, even after yapping on the phone with my SIL for an hour.  So, I tested the pain boundaries with some light housework and still no pain.

I decided to test the boundaries a bit more with a walk to park with Little Lion Man.  I even wore my Garmin to pace myself from walking too fast (or even running) or walking too slow.

The mile walk to the park felt great.  Just the exercise and sun I needed to feel good about me again.  Little Lion Man loved the change in routine after being cooped up in the house for nearly 3 weeks and slept for 2 hours afterwards, which was an added bonus.  I really needed that too.

So there it is.  I did something today.  Finally.

Janathon 2012 – Day 11

PhotobucketLast night was not a good night.  Typically, I fall asleep around 9-ish because I wake-up so early (around 5:00).  But last night I couldn’t sleep and I was awake until 10:30.  I don’t know if I was nervous about my dental surgery on Thursday or if I was nervous about this bible study group I started attending on Wednesday mornings.  Whatever the reason, I couldn’t fall asleep and when I finally did, I woke up at 2:00.  I fell back to sleep but only for an hour and a half and then I laid there staring at the ceiling for another hour.

This weekend would be a step back week and I wasn’t sure if I would be up for a 6 mile run after surgery.  So, I ran the miles today.  I strapped on my Garmin and hit play on my MP3 player, but my player was dead.  Oh good Lord!  Six miles with no music?  Oh well.  It has to be done.

I opened the door to begin my music free stride.  Oh good Lord!  It’s raining!  And it’s windy!  Oh well.  It has to be done.

But man, that wind was tough!  My legs were not happy and told me every step of the way.  I tortured them yesterday for speed work and now my legs underwent some unplanned resistance training.

After 3.1 miles, I hit a lap so I could judge my 5K pace.

3.1 miles

So, it wasn’t as good as Monday’s 3.1 mile, but then there was some serious wind today!  And Oh Law, my legs were hurting!

About 4 miles into the run, I experienced a cramp in my side, which was so ironic since @LocalAdventures referenced me and my hydration techniques on his Janathon report yesterday.  In the comments section, I stated how hydration is such a difficult balance for me.  If I drink too little water, I cramp.  If I drink too much water, I cramp and then I need to pee.  So which was it today?

I only drank about 10 oz of water and I peed twice before my run, but I must have been soaking up every drop of rain water to feel a cramp and a need to urinate.

And that wind! UGH!  At four miles, I was so done and my legs forced me complain out loud in the dark.  I’m sure if I had music, I would just sing away the pain to distract myself.  Instead, I cried out, “Oh Law.  My leggggs huuurrt!”  Plus, having no music caused me to startle and panic over every little rustle I heard.  What was that? A rat? A lizard? A rabbit crazed lepus?

But, when I hit the 6 mile mark, it felt good great but oh Law, my legs hurt!

Janathon 2012 – Day 7

I made it to 9 miles.  I was a little worried about my heel, but it didn’t give me trouble until about mile 8.  Before my run, I walked about 0.5 mile and stretched.  I also stretched through the run so I guess all that helped.  Although hours later now, my heel is giving me some trouble, so it’s time for the frozen water bottle trick.

Speaking of water bottles, I left my water bottle at the 1 mile mark, so there weren’t many water breaks during this run.  I actually ran about 7 miles without water, which I think is pretty amazing.  Granted not the smartest move, because I usually get pretty thirsty throughout the course, however, I was surprised at how far I could go with a water break.

Just to do something different, I decided to run the Gasparilla Distance Classic 15K this year instead of the half.  Out of curiosity, I looked up my stats from the Minnie Marathon 15K to compare my past time today’s run.

Yep, I got my work cut-out for me this year.

Janathon 2012 – Day 2, 3, 4, and 5

PhotobucketHere we are 5 days into the Janathon and I’ve already failed. Yay me.  I ran 3.1 miles on Day 2 and logged it on Running Free, but I didn’t blog about it.  So I’ll share my stats three days later.

3.1 miles

Time 32:12

My family and I went to Universal Studios that day and there was just no time for blogging between rides.  Do I get extra points for walking around an amusement park?  So, less than a week into Janathon and I’ve already lost.

This is where you tell me that no one is a loser if the Janathon encourages you to move.  Um yeah….about that….

On Day 3, a cold front rolled through, so I did 31 minutes of Wii Fit plus 140 crunches and 30 pushups (which took about ten minutes).  I don’t run outside in temps below 40.  I know. I know. No excuses, but I’m a fair weather runner. Listen, last fall I got over my rain issues, so give me time.  I may come around the cold too.

But I have to tell you. I’m not crazy about this Wii Fit thing.  I can see how it helps with conditioning, but I didn’t feel like I really worked-out.  My girls love it, though.  So, if it gets my family moving then that’s a good thing, right?

Um yeah….about my whole family moving…

On Day 4, my SIL and niece came over and did some Wii Fit exercises with my girls.  Notice I said “my girls”, because I nodded off on the couch waiting for my turn.  Yep, that’s right. I got nothing for Day 4.  Not even 1 sit-up or pushup or a 1mile walk.  Nothing.  I’m a Janathon joke and Wii Fit failure now too.  I know.   I suck.

But never fear! I redeemed myself today on Day 5 with a 3.1 mile run! Well, I sort of redeemed myself because I did 3.1 miles on the treadmill at my friend’s gym (@fmc3) and it took me freaking 47:18! Are you f*cking kidding me?  WTF is that?!

It was so pathetic that my Garmin didn’t even register the run.  I think about halfway into it, my Garmin said I went 19 feet at a pace of 47:00 minutes.  How sad is that?!  I embarrassed my Garmin.  And you should have seen how hard I sweated!  But at least my sweat drops didn’t become icicles hanging off my nose running outside in that frigid 28 degrees air.

After my pathetic run, I decided to take advantage of the machines in the gym.  I busted 4 sets of leg extensions, leg curls and lateral pulls.  That felt good.  Lord knows, I need the strength training.

I also added some sit-ups and pushups into Day 5’s work-out with 180 crunches/pilates and 30 pushups.

Random Thoughts about Some Challenges, My Heeling Process and a Footnote

For the month of October, I committed to the Unprocessed Challenge and by doing so, I swore off processed foods.  Basically, participants had to refrain from eating foods they couldn’t reproduce, bake or cook themselves, such as foods that can only be produced in a factory.   Thankfully, store-bought beer and wine were acceptable.

Seriously?  In October?  What was I thinking?  I freaking love candy corn and other Halloween candy.  I think I ate even more of it because I knew I couldn’t on account of the challenge.  It was tough and I think I lasted (at most) two weeks.  And then I devoured some Tyson hot wings.

For November, I’m participating in the 30 Day Giving Challenge for the third year.  I love this challenge, but I’m not going to lie.  It’s hard, even when I plan out all my gifts for the month, because schedules change, kids gets sick and sometimes things just don’t always go according to plan.  I’ve done well though and I’ve given 15 gifts and then some in 15 days so far.

Speaking of gifts, my t-shirt giveaway didn’t attract as many people as other giveaways have in the past.  I tweeted, Facebooked, linked up at giveaway blog hops but still only 4 people entered the contest, including my SIL, Kirsten and my friend, Chrissy, who won as a result to all her entries.  Obviously, she had the best chance, which is what you hope for when hosting a giveaway.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in giveaway participants?

I had this whole 12 Days of Christmas giveaway plan in the works, but after this giveaway, I’m rethinking the idea.  It’s a lot of work and if it doesn’t generate a response, I’ll be disappointed.  Oh well.  But I’ve got other fun bloggie Christmas plans in the works, like a blogger ornament exchange and a virtual cookie recipe swap!  Stay tuned for more details!

This Sunday, as part of my giving challenge, I’m volunteering at the Women’s Half Marathon water stations with Suncoast Running.  I’m so excited to give back to a sport that has given me so much.  I’m looking forward to cheering and encouraging all the runners while handing them a cup of cold water with a smile.  It will mean the world to each participant, whether it’s their first half marathon or the fiftieth.

Do you remember that almost 21 miler I did a couple of weeks ago with little to no pain?  I even survived walking around Universal Studios the next day (minus a hamstring pull from 25 pound toddler squats all day).  Then, I didn’t run for two days to rest.  I ran about 3 miles on Tuesday and then on Wednesday, I ran almost 10 miles.  And that’s when it all went downhill.

I had some serious heel pain, like my heel was being stabbed with a knife.  I’ve never had this pain before, but I knew it wasn’t good.  I researched about heel pain and learned that I have heel spurs possibly as a result from increasing miles too quickly or running in old shoes (shoes without support). I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter because I’ve been pretty careful to not push myself too far too quickly.

As for healing my heel, everything I’ve read recommends taking a week off from running.  But, my marathon is in 12 days12 DAYS!  And I can’t run or even taper!

So now, I need new shoes.  But new shoes need to be broken in before I attempt to run 26.2 miles in them.  Plus, I don’t have any extra cash at the moment and I was really hoping Santa would bring me some new running shoes.  My friends over at Suncoast Running told me that they will have some great Black Friday specials. But I’m still nervous about running a marathon in new shoes.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a week since I last ran and it still hurts to walk or put any pressure on my right heel.  I tried some light hiking when we went camping over the holiday weekend and the pain would gradually increase.  I’ve read that I can do alternate work-outs like cycling or very low impact aerobics, but I don’t think my heel could handle any impact.  Plus, I’m still scared to get back on my bike.  So resting and yoga is the plan for a few more days until I get some new shoes.  It seems my running plans have become a footnote and I’m not liking it all.

Oh and there’s this other nagging other issue I keep forgetting to do.  I haven’t booked a hotel room for the race yet.  I know. I know.  What am I waiting for?  I was waiting until I registered, which was delayed until I knew I could come close to a marathon distance again post-baby number 3.  Well, I’m officially registered (as of October 22) for the Space Coast Marathon and now I can’t find an available room.  But it doesn’t matter really because it appears that I will have to buy shoes instead of a securing a hotel room.  Looks like I’ll be sleeping in my car the night before the marathon. Yay.

As you can see, lots of challenges lie ahead this month.

Random Thoughts about Saddlebags and BFFs

After Allana’s remarks about my muffin top and viewing the photos from our girlfriend getaway, I cranked up the strength training and muscle conditioning last week.  I’m not being too hard on myself.  Trust me.  My girlfriends and I were having a Hangover moment looking at the photos.  “Ewwwww!  “Oh God!”  “What the…?!”  I vaguely recall as some of the things said as we flipped through the images on Kelly’s camera.

At the time the photos were taken, we must have been wearing some heavy duty beer goggles, because we thought we looked HOT.  The next day….not so much.  So, after a week of recovery and detoxing from our little weekend bender, I knew boot camp and kickboxing with my BFF Sharon Mann would be the only way to bust these saddlebags.

But I forgot we canceled the TiVo, which meant I lost all my prerecorded exercise programs.

Yep, after years of hanging out with my happy little TiVo, we canceled our service and honestly I really do miss his smiley little antennae head.  But we already have cable throughout the house, so the extra cost for TiVo didn’t make much sense since we can add DVRs at no additional fee.  Therefore, it was time to say good-bye to TiVO, my BFF Sharon Mann and all her work-outs I knew by heart.

But the beauty of cable is all the On Demand programming at your fingertips!  All I had to do is find the Exercise TV On Demand channel and search for a work-out in the menu.  And that’s where I found my new BFF Amy Dixon.  Amy and I did an Advanced Boot Camp work-out and a kickboxing work-out and she totally kicked my ass.  I had delayed on set pain for two days.  It rocked!

I tweeted about my new BFF @amydixonfitness and our ass-kicking kickboxing saddlebag-busting work-out.

And she tweeted back!  How freaking cool is that?!

Sharon just never appreciated me.  Amy gets me.  She’s my sole mate.

On Thursday, my Garmin was dead, but I guestimated that I ran 3.1 miles in about 35 minutes.  And then halfway through my run, my MP3 player died.  Good times.  So although it only took me about 35 minutes, it felt like FOREVER without any music.

Later that day I discovered why my Garmin wasn’t working.  Little Lion Man keeps messing with the electronics on my desk and his little grabby, pudgy piggy fingers knocked my Garmin off its cradle.  He’s getting out of control with his climbing and reaching for stuff.  UGH!

The weather has been GORGEOUS for the past few days.  A cold front rolled through over the weekend and took the humidity with it.  It’s such a pleasant experience to open the door and be greeted by cool air instead of sticky, thick, hot air.  The morning lows have been sitting around 58 degrees which is PERFECT running weather.  I even shaved 3 minutes off my 5K time.
