Frisky Fitness

I’m feeling a little frisky for today’s Five Minutes for Fitness

Cardio Tease has been draping the Tampa Bay area like a feathery boa.  Carmen Electra catapulted the popularity of cardio tease when she brought sexy strip tease aerobics into the spotlight with her DVDs and her appearance on Ellen.

These cardio routines are definitely not your mother’s Jane Fonda’s work-out.  Leg warmers have been replaced with fish-net stockings, however you’ll be happy to know the pelvic lifts and forward hamstring stretches leaving your ass high in the air are still part of the work-out.

So, show your sexy side and strut your stuff.

When you’ve mastered the floor routine, take it into the bedroom next.  You have to appreciate any work-out that lets you lie down in bed.

Kickin’ It

Time to put your best foot forward for this week’s Five Minutes for Fitness

Kickboxing is one of my favorite cross-training work-outs.  It’s is a great core work-out that forces you to use your entire body.

With each jab and kick, you tone and strengthen your abs and hips.  Punches mixed with squats and lunges work your quads and hamstrings, too.

Honestly, there’s nothing like a good ass kicking shadow kickboxing to help relieve some stress.

Get Ready to Wiggle!

A few months back, my family and I received free tickets to The Wiggles concert.  Although The Wiggles just aren’t the same since Greg (Yellow Wiggle) left the group, the concert is still a fun time for all.

With all the wiggling, twisting, shaking and other silly dance steps that The Wiggles are known for, it is no surprise as to how these men stay so slim.  That’s why this week’s Five Minutes for Fitness is a tribute to The Wiggles

So, grab the kids and have fun with it.  I’ve posted some of my favorite wiggly songs to give you a decent five minute work-out.  I’m calling this my “Wiggly Work-out”.

Even if my oldest is too cool for The Wiggles now, they still make me feel like dancing.

But It Ain’t No Lie! It’s Time for Five Minutes for Fitness!

During both Disney races, there were DJs placed sporadically along the route blasting tunes to keep the runners motivated.  I loved the variety of music they played, which often caused me to break out in random dance moves, like the Hustle and YMCA.  I’m sure I irritated the runners around me and they were probably hoping I would trip!

When NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye boomed over the speakers, I couldn’t control the compulsion to bust out my best hip hop moves with that blast from the past.

Then, during my long haul on Sunday, I remembered Darrin’s Dance Grooves, which taught the basic dance steps to all your favorite pop videos.

So, due to my NSYNC flashblack at Disney, I am dusting off Darrin’s Dance Grooves to Bye Bye Bye for this week’s installment for Five Minutes for Fitness.

Once you learn all the steps, try dancing along with NSYNC at the American Music Awards.  Doesn’t JT look like such a baby?

But it ain’t no lie.  Baby, Bye, Bye, Bye!

Five Minutes for Fitness: Hot Diggity Dog!

With the Disney Marathon right around the corner, I thought I would bring back an episode of Five Minutes for Fitness with a Mickey Mouse treat.  This video montage of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’s Hot Dog Song will surely start your new year with a little spring in your step.

When the girls watch the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I love to dance in front of the T.V and copy the silly steps of the characters.  My kids roll with laughter at how ridiculous I look, but at least I’m moving and grooving with the help of the Mickey and the gang!

Pluto pumps out a set of push-ups.  Minnie incorporates resistance into her upper body movement.  Daisy, Donald and Mickey offer moves that work the core.  But, I particularly like Goofy’s style, because he attempts a whole body approach with his fancy footwork.  I think I may even finish my marathon (the unofficial Goofy Challenge) with Goofy’s dance.

So, pick a character and learn the dance steps.  Once the songs ends, play it again and follow the dance moves of another character.  Have fun with it, but remember to bring the kids in on the fun, too!

Now Put Your Hands Up

This week’s Five Minutes for Fitness was inspired by a GNO a few weeks back.  We were celebrating Faith’s 30 Birthday (I know…I know…My girlfriends are so young.) when Beyonce’s Single Ladies started pumping in the club and we I demonstrated my fabulous ridicuolous Bootylicious moves on the dance floor.

You know, you don’t see enough jazz hands these days.

Now, put your hands up and get ready to pound out the beats with Beyonce.  This chick has an amazing body and its not because she is sitting on her bootylicious badunkadunk.  Personally, I think she should have used a bit more jazz hands in this video.

And if you want more, try these Destiny’s Child dance moves.  Think of it as core training.   Can you handle this?  I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly.  I don’t think you’re ready, ’cause my body is too bootylicious for ya baby.

I Like to Move It, Move It!

Five Minutes for Fitness returns this week with a Madagascar 2 Dance Party.

My family and I found ourselves boogieing in the aisles to the beats from this hilarious sequel.  So, break out your best Alex the Lion butterfly moves and shake those Gloria-ous hippo hips.  It’s time to move it, move it!

Hans Zimmer and will.i.am collaborated to create terrific toe-tapping tunes for this soundtrack  How about another song to inspire you to shake what the good Lord gave you?  C’mon! Go Wild!

A Killer Halloween Dance Party

With Halloween in the air, it’s time to cast a spell to raise Five Minutes for Fitness from the dead with a killer dance party concoction that will surely lift your sprits.

My girls love to play freeze dance to Witch Doctor.   The Alvin and the Chipmunks’ 2007 remake of an old classic is just song to get your heart pumping while having fun with the kids.  To play the freeze dance game, blast the tune and bust your best moves.  Jump up and down or shake your tail to the beat.  Then, hit the pause button to make everyone stop.  The dancing resumes once the music plays again.

Also, add the Monster Mash to your Halloween dance playlist.  This twisting tune will build your obliques and help burn the blubber around your waist.  In case you have two left feet, try these moves.

And, of course, Thriller is a Halloween party mix must!  No mere mortals can resist those zany zombie moves, which are a knee-jerk reaction once you hear the music.  I found this vintage dance instruction video clip to teach you the steps.  Hold on to your leg warmers; it’s pretty frightening.

Once you learn 80′s Kim’s fine dance moves, test your skills out with the tune.

If you want to keep the dance party hopping, here are some more spine-tingling sounds to give you and your kids a thrilling time:

  • Hungry Like the Wolf
  • I Want Candy
  • Boogieman
  • Staying Alive
  • Ghostbusters
  • Let’s Go Crazy
  • Scooby Doo Theme Song
  • Purple People Eater
  • Transylvania Twist
  • Monster Boogie

Yay for Yoga!

Yoga is an important part of my training routine.  I love stretching after a tough work-out.  Even on my rest days, I find time to stretch my muscles.  It makes my muscles happy.

So for today’s 5 Minutes for Fitness, let’s make your muscles happy too with a 5 minute yoga video.

Namaste.

Lovely Lunges

For this week’s edition of 5 Minutes for Fitness, let’s do some lunges, which are one of my favorite strengthening exercises.

Lunges are great to help strengthen and tone your legs.  For forward lunges, stand tall with your hands on your hips and step with one leg forward.  Be sure your front knee does not pass your toes.  Then, switch legs.  Make sure to keep your abdomen pulled in tight and your posture straight.

I even found a fabulous visual to help you.

How to do Lunges — powered by ExpertVillage.com

If you want to challenge yourself, try a few reps of walking lunges, but watch your alignment.  For an even greater challenge, hold 5-10 pound weights while you walk.

And of course you need some music keep you moving and Mercy by Duffy (3:40) is the perfect song for lunges.  After a few reps of these, you will find yourself “begging for mercy”.
