A Very She & Him Christmas

I read somewhere that Zooey Deschanel’s voice helped land her role in Elf.  Since first watching that movie, my husband has had a crash on Zooey Deschanel all in part to her voice.  Normally, Allan doesn’t have a thing for blondes, but he could see past this siren’s golden locks in part to her soulful, sleepy bedroom voice.

Once he learned she was a brunette, Zooey Deschanel had a permanent spot on Allan’s laminated list somewhere between Marisa Tomei and Amy Adams.

Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of Zooey Deschanel’s voice.  I’d prefer to watch her in (500) Days of Summer or as the adorkable Jess in her new hit comedy, New Girl rather than listen to her sing.  However, I had a change of heart when I heard She & Him’s In the Sun, but more recently when I heard their new Christmas album, A Very She & Him Christmas.

More than another Christmas album filled with favorites, She & Him honors these songs with pure and simple renditions, perfect for cool nights drinking hot cocoa in front of a fire while gazing at the tree.  In a world of autotune and over produced music, each song sends you back to an era of a simpler time when families sat around a radio for enjoyment.

My favorite song on the album is The Christmas Waltz.  Zooey’s style and tone reflects the true heart and feel of the song.  Watch She & Him’s live performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

I’ve downloaded the songs from amazon and on the sly, I’ll add a few songs to Allan’s player as a surprise for our anniversary in a few weeks.  Christmas songs by She & Him will make a sweet, romantic gift, especially since Zooey’s voice is like sugar straight from the candy cane.  (Watch out, Jewel!)

Pssst!  Speaking of gifts….Don’t miss this one!

A Tangled Mess No More!

When my girls are due for a trim, Allana always begs me to take her to Sweet & Sassy for her haircut.  I adore the whole Sweet & Sassy glittery pampering experience as much as my girls, but on a tight SAHMom-on-the-run race budget, princess haircuts at Sweet & Sassy simply are not financially feasible for two girls even with discounts or specials.

But when I got wind of Sweet & Sassy’s Tangled haircut promotion for the release of the Tangled DVD, I rushed the girls right into the salon.  Any girl who donated 10” of hair to Locks of Love would receive a free haircut and style.   BUT, would my girls be willing to donate 10” of their beautiful curls for a good cause and a free haircut?

Even if my girls weren’t willing to donate their hair, I decided to still bring them into the salon to take advantage of the “buy one haircut, get a second haircut 50% off” deal and all the Tangled fun Sweet & Sassy was offering.

So when I picked them up from school and informed the girls about Sweet & Sassy’s Tangled event, Allana agreed to do it.  Her exact words were, “Sure.  I’ll do it. Wait.  How short will my hair be?”  Emmalynn wasn’t quite so willing at first.

Using a tape measure, I showed the girls the length of 10”of hair and approximately how much hair would be left after the cut.  Allana still agreed to do it.  Once Emmalynn saw the length in the mirror, she was ready to do it.  Her exact words were, “Oh!  That will look so cute!”

And boy did those girls ever look so cute with their new dos!  Later that evening, Allana told me she donated her hair in memory of Aunt June.  Her unexpected, unprompted gesture caught me off guard and really choked me up.

I am so proud of my beautiful girls and their generosity.

Manly Manhole Covers

Allan’s obsession with manhole cover cufflinks began in New Orleans two years ago. While staying in the French Quarter, we stumbled upon a jewelry store that specialized in custom-made silver jewelry. Allan found a pair of NOLA manhole cover cufflinks that he had to have, but in the end he decided against purchasing them.

Two years later, he still talked about those cufflinks and how he wished had bought them. Then last Christmas, my sister surprised him with a pair and she mentioned how she had discovered a website that sold manhole cover cufflinks from all over the globe.

Upon hearing this news, Allan’s ears perked up and there was a silver glimmer in his eyes. He then devised a plan to collect silver manhole cover cufflinks from various cities as souvenirs. The next manhole cover cufflink up his sleeve would be New York City.

But personally, I am a bit partial to Tampa.

Musical Monday: The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Saturday night, my family and I enjoyed a delicious dinner at Bahama Breeze and then drove over to Clearwater Beach to catch a glimpse of one our beautiful Florida sunsets.

Watching my children play in the sugar white sands of Clearwater Beach with a gorgeous sunset as a backdrop was truly the best gift ever and the amazing songs that played on XM’s The Coffee House captured the mood of the evening superbly.

But the smiles on everyone’s faces that night was the ribbon that tied the whole package together for the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

Happy Birthday, Miss Sharon!

At the beginning of the year, I vowed to treat Emmalynn’s preschool teacher to a weekly bottle of wine.  Although I failed to deliver on my weekly bribe promise, Miss Sharon’s birthday seemed like a perfect opportunity to offer a small token of my appreciation.

Since Miss Sharon has teased me about Emmalynn already exhibiting middle child behaviors, I couldn’t resist giving her a bottle of Middle Sister Wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon appropriately labeled “Mischief Maker”.  I even added my own embellishments to the label.

Emmalynn offered her contribution to the gift by making a card and then, Allana joined in the fun by creating one too. After all, Miss Sharon was Allana’s preschool teacher as well and she still adores her. Honestly, we all adore her.

Giveaway: A Small Feat for Small Feet

For the past 30 days, my girls and I have been giving many gifts, but our 30 Gifts in 30 Days challenge draws to an end just as the season of giving begins.  Therefore, I thought I would offer one more gift to celebrate the end of our successful challenge and the start of the gift giving season.

The Fuchsia Beach Crocs I received as part of my Women’s Half Marathon goodie bag are too small.  When I registered for the race, I ordered the wrong size (small W6-7/M4-5), but my mistake is another’s gain or what I prefer to call “My Small Feat for Small Feet Giveaway”.

So, if you would like to win these pretty in hot pink Crocs, then simply leave a comment below.  These size W6-7/M4-5 Beach Crocs would be a great treat for a petite feet friend.  One lucky winner will be randomly selected on Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

Run DMT’s 100th Post Giveaway

This will remain a sticky post until November 30.  Please scroll down for newer posts.

I can hardly believe that in a short few months I have written 100 bloggie bits.  What’s even more amazing is that people actually read this stuff!

To commemorate this magnificent occasion and to show my gratitude for my Run DMT fans readers, I am hosting a 100th Post Giveaway sponsored by SPIbelt, therefore the prize is a stunning SPIbelt of your choice.

I first discovered the SPIbelt (Small Personal Item belt) at the Minnie Marathon Expo in May and I really regretted not purchasing one then.  With a SPIbelt, I could have run numerous race hands free while carrying my camera, phone and avoided tying my key to my shorts.  I definitely needed this shnazzy little SPIbelt for the Race for the Cure.

From the SPIbelt website, “Sleek, expandable, secure and does not bounce. Can hold an iPod™, Blackberry™, cell, keys, up to five GU™ packs, and other small personal items. The SPIbelt does not bounce, ride or shift while running or doing other activities.”  For racers, a “SPIbelt doubles as a race number belt.”

The SPIbelt has been featured on the Today Show, Rachel Ray and has been spotlighted in a variety of magazines.  It is the hottest thing in the running world since running skirts and Jelly Belly Sport Beans!  And, it’s made in the USA!

You know you want one, so here’s how to enter the Run DMT 100th Post Snazzy SPIbelt Giveaway for your chance to win one:

  1. Simply visit SPIbelt.com, select your color preference and the post your selection in a reply to this post for an entry to win.
  2. Blog about the Run DMT’s 100th Post Snazzy SPIbelt Giveaway on your blog for an additional chance to win.  Remember to grab the Run DMT belly button!
  3. Add another reply to this thread when you’ve added the Run DMT 100th Post Snazzy SPIbelt Giveaway to your blog.
  4. Include your e-mail address in your reply for a third entry.

One lucky winner will be randomly selected on Sunday, November 30.

Below is the html code for my shnazzy blogger belly button.  Remember to link back here.  Thanks for playing along!  Good luck!
