Random Thoughts about Green Things and Other Gross Stuff

Little Lion Man’s green snot situation is still sticking around. Poor little dude can’t shake whatever he’s got and then this morning it escalated into a hacking cough.  I debated calling the doctor, but since I had to run some errands, I thought I’d call the doctor on the way.  No appointments were available until the afternoon, so against my better judgment, I decided to stop by Target while I was out.

Once in Target, Little Lion Man’s hacking developed into a projectile vomit situation and he puked three times in his stroller.  I made a mad dash to the cart wipes area to clean the mess.  As I attempted to clean up his entire stomach contents, Little Lion Man notices the bananas nearby.  “Mama, nanas.”

Yes, there are bananas over there.

“Mama, nanas, please.”

“Seriously, dude. You just puked all over yourself.  Now you want a banana?”  He replied with a huge grin across his face.

Wondering if this is a good idea, I reviewed the BRAT diet in my head.  “Bananas are good for upset tummies and we really do need diapers.  And Allana needs a science board and cough drops.  Right then!”

As I ran off to finish my shopping, I hoped no one would sniff him or the stroller while we shopped.

On my way to the infant aisle, I spotted some fun skinny jeans.   Before you judge, the women’s section is right next to the baby stuff and I didn’t try them on! I swear!  I just looked.

Anyway, I love the animal prints and the variety of bright colors for spring.   Thank goodness I didn’t spot anything sparkly.  Poor Little Lion Man would have really suffered.

Later at the doctor’s office, I learned Little Lion Man has a nasty respiratory infection and some fluid in his ears.  Poor little guy!

Although Little Lion Man is my latest patient, it’s been like revolving door of a hospital ward in this house.  Someone has had some infliction or illness for the past month.  It’s crazy which also makes me crazy because it’s difficult to squeeze in my running when I’m playing nursemaid.

However, last Saturday, I ran in the Armadillo 10K (full recap to follow shortly).  Then, I ran 3 miles on Monday, but I forgot to charge my Garmin, so no stats.  This morning, I did some speedwork.  Nothing fancy, just 1 mile warm-up followed by 4 quarter sprints and a mile for a cool down.

My girls and I have the Spring Sprint 5K this Saturday.  I’m excited to run our first 2012 race together and of course, we’ll all be wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day.  Hopefully, Little Lion Man’s snot situation won’t coordinate with his shirt by then. That’s an accessory I can do without.

Irish Drinking Songs and Going Out In {green} Style

I am ridiculously excited about St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Saturday this year because there’s no work or after school activities to get in the way of our Irish beer consumption.  Although my girls and I do have a 5K race in the morning, it won’t be long before I’m finishing off a green beer after crossing the finish line.

Before we head out that evening, Allan and I will line our bellies with some Guinness corned beef and potatoes and then get onto to the drinking.  It won’t be too long before we look like this.

I’ll probably wear the same green top I always wear, but I love this shirt from Urban Outfitters.

I’m thinking about buying a green hair wig too just to change it up this year and go out full on green style.

What are your plans for St. Patrick’s Day?  Will you be going out in style?

Random Thoughts About Challenges and Other Shameless Plugs

Last week, we ended our Love My Abs Challenge and moved onto another one, Pushing Our Luck.  If you missed my ab progress, you should check it out because it’s “abs”olutley amazing;-)

As for March’s pushups challenge, basically we’re following the One Hundred Push Ups Program.  We’re only week one into it and it’s going well, but then, I love push-ups.  Swing back this Thursday to read a full rundown on my first week.  There’s a linky party too if you want push your luck along with us.

And while I’m a self-promoting and on a shameless plug roll, I would like to inform all local bloggers about the next installment of the Tampa Bay Bloggers event to be held at Square 1 Burgers on March 24 at 5:00 p.m.  It will be a great opportunity to connect network with other local bloggers and of course, there will be swag bags!

Oh and one more shameless plug!  I was selected to be a regular contributor for 5 Minutes for Moms’ newest feature, 5 Minutes for Food.  Stop by 5 Minutes for Mom this Thursday to see what recipe I share. I’ll give you a hint. It’s something sweet for St. Patrick’s Day and no, it’s not green.

Last Friday, I was like a kid in a candy store at the Gasparilla Race Weekend’s 8 On Your Side Health and Fitness Expo.  Besides a bountiful of cool free food and goodies, there were a ton of vendors and really cool running threads.  Of course, I wanted everything, but bought nothing. I really, really love these tees by Raw Threads.

Thankfully, friendships are free and I was so happy to finally meet my cyberspace BFF and virtual running partner @leighspannwflaLeigh is part of the Storm Team 8 for News Channel 8 (our local NBC affiliate).  Much like her morning forecasts, Leigh’s tweets are full of sunshine and warm-fuzzies and she’s just as adorable in person as you’d expect her to be.  Thank you for all your support and encouragement, Leigh!  See you at the next race!

Since I had two half marathons so close together, there haven’t been much training runs.  Then, Little Lion Man caught some green snot cold, so naturally, I caught it and I just wanted to rest.  Now with the colds and half marathons behind me, I’m ready to start training hard again.  This morning I was ready for some speed work.

I’ve been volunteering after school every Tuesday to assist with my girls’ school’s running club and since I have Little Lion Man in tow, it means that I have been running 1-2 miles in the late afternoon with a stroller every week or what I like to call “resistance training”.  Have I mentioned how much I hate running with a stroller?  But if it makes my girls happy to see me out there with them, then it’s worth it.  Even on days like today when the wind is blowing so hard and the stroller catches every breeze like a kite and I feel like I’m running backwards instead of forward.  Yep, totally worth it.

I have two more races this month: Armadillo 10K and the Spring Sprint 5K.  My goal for the 10K is to finish under an hour, but since I’m running the Spring Sprint with my girls, my only goal is to keep them motivated and moving forward, much like the after school running club.

Green Eggs and Ham (My Kids Will Eat)

Photobucket“Mom, every year, you make some version of green eggs and ham and we never like it. But I think you have a winner with this one!” (You can say that again, kid!)

I do so like green eggs and ham!
Thank you!
Thank you, Sam-I-am!   - Green Eggs and Ham, Dr. Seuss

There were tons of fun Dr. Seuss activities floating around Pinterest, however, when I spotted this non-seussical idea, I decided to attempt a green version for Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

When I made these candied green eggs and ham, my kids gobbled them without complaint.  Imagine that!  I’ve never seen them so enthusiastic to eat green eggs and ham!

This will definitely be a tradition when honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

And they’ll be cupcakes too, of course.

Green Eggs and Ham (adapted from From Away)

Ingredients

4 ounce bar of good white chocolate

Green M&Ms candies

Pretzel sticks, broken in half.

Directions

Using a double boiler, bring 1-2 cups of water to a boil.  Break white chocolate up into small pieces and add to top pan, stirring constantly until chocolate melts.

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper or non-stick aluminum foil.  Drop small quarter-size dollops of white chocolate onto lined cookie sheet.  Place a single M&M on each chocolate pool, with the print facing down. Add two halves of pretzel sticks. Let cool completely at room temperature and then place in freezer for ten minutes to set candies.

March Challenge: Pushing Our Luck

My Twitter running tweeps (@ForrestGump49er  @runningrealtor1 @amanda_mowry @runningmom2boys @runmama2girls @SeeKateRun1 ) and I love a good challenge.  I think we have an addiction to challenges.  100 Ab exercises?  No problem.  I’ll see your 100 and raise you 100 more.  Yes, it’s an addiction and it may be time for an intervention, but not before we start another challenge!

For March, we are Pushing Our Luck by taking on the One Hundred Push Ups Program.  Of course, we’ll still be working the abs, but if you follow #pushingit, you will be able to follow our push-ups progress and join our Twitter support group.

To begin the Pushing Our Luck Challenge, you have to first perform the One Hundred Push Ups’ initial test to determine your level and starting point.  I vlogged my performance test, so you can get a good laugh an idea on how it works.

That’s right. I do girlie alternate push-ups and there ain’t no shame in that. Hate the game, not the player.

So, 30+ alternate push-ups are still push-ups as defined by Steve Spiers (the mastermind behind One Hundred Push Ups) which places me at Week 3, Day 1, Column 3 for the start of our March challenge.

Where will you start?

Perform your test. Write up a post or make a vlog, whichever you prefer, and then swing back here to link up share your post.  Please be sure to add the Pushing Our Luck button to your post and link it back to Run DMT to help spread the word about our March challenge.

Then, follow the One Hundred Push Ups program each week by doing your predetermined level of push-ups three days a week.

As for me, I will be starting Day 1 tomorrow (Friday, March 2) to be on schedule for our weekly linky party every Thursday in March, which will include a full report of my progress and a linky.  I would love for you to share your progress each week too.

Remember to tweet #pushingit to share your reps and progress.

Hope this makes sense!

If you have any questions, leave a reply in the comments section below.

Good luck!

Love My Abs Challenge: The Last Day

Our Love My Abs Challenge is winding now, but the crunches will continue!

I am so in love in the results of the last few weeks.  After 4 weeks, I feel stronger, but I feel and look leaner.  I can’t believe how much I shaved off my waist in such a short time!  The shorts I’m wearing in this photo are size extra small and that just blows my mind.

Even though the challenge is over, I will continue to do 200 reps a day and slowly increase because I think it’s so important to continue strengthening my core.

How did you end the challenge? Are you stronger and leaner too?  Link up and tell us all about your lovely abs!

Little Lion Man caught a nasty cold and it was difficult to do crunches with a crying green snot toddler clinging to me all day.  So I totally flaked and missed Days 23 & 24, but I was back on track on Day 25 and finished the challenge strong by moving up to 200 reps and two 30 seconds planks a day.

For March, I am leading a new challenge: “Pushing Our Luck”.  Basically, we will be following the 100 hundred pushups plan for the next four weeks.  The challenge starts tomorrow March 1, so stay tuned for my initial test (a vlog post) and all the specifics to the challenge tomorrow.

For a sneak peek and a good laugh, watch my initial 100 pushups test from three years ago.

Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Recap

Prior to the race, I had caught my son’s cold, but thankfully, I knew I wouldn’t be running the race hard.  Having run a Disney race before, I knew there were so many distractions along the course that I would want to stop for a few of the photo opps.

Originally, I had planned to stay with my non-runner girlfriends the night before the race, but the more I thought about it, the more I worried about not being able to sleep.  Typically, a girlfriend getaway leads to heavy drinking and not enough rest, which is not conducive to any race, whether you run it easy or not.  Then, last minute, my mom offered to stay with me in Orlando and you know, my mom (any mom) would make sure I ate right and slept well.

And I’m so glad we arranged that last minute decision, because my 3:30 a.m. wakeup call came fast!

Since I still hadn’t decided which princess to dress as, I packed both princess costumes.  Allana (my ten year old) suggested I be Tiana.  “You’re just like Tiana.  You can sing.  You have dreams and you set goals”.  (I just love that she said that.  It was a proud mama moment that warmed my heart.)

My old running partner, Tiffany, gave me some great advice.  “Wear the Belle costume because if you get tired of the tutu, at least you’ll still have a running skirt on and you’ll still look like Belle.”

Once I picked up my race packet at the expo, I finalized my princess plans.  “Belle” was printed on the bib as my favorite princess.  So, I had to be Belle.

On the morning of the race, traffic into Epcot parking was very congested and I worried that I wouldn’t make the 5:00 a.m. corral call, but then things started to move and I arrived at the park at 4:40 a.m.  However, I still had to walk to the start line and Disney is not kidding when they say it takes 20 minutes.  I forgot about that walk!

It was a chilly morning, but not freezing and I warmed myself with a stolen hotel towel and the aluminum wrap from Rock ‘Roll Half.  I looked even more like Belle with a red cape around my shoulders.

On the way to the start, I spotted all types of princesses and Disney costumes: Dalmatian princesses, villains, Tinkerbelles, Minnie Mouse, Lumiere and Mrs. Potts, and of course every variety of Disney Princesses.  I wished that my girlfriends were running the race with me. Each of us was supposed to be a different Disney Princess.

Strangely, as I walked and wished for my friends to be there, I met Melissa dressed as Cinderella in corral B.  She looked just like Lori.  It freaked me out a bit, but my stares probably freaked her out too.  I explained to her that she reminded me of one of my friends and she said, “Well she’s here with you in spirit”, which is something Lori would say.  I was so grateful to have a Lori lookalike and Lori’s spirit running the race with me.

Fairy Godmother spoke the magic words and fireworks launched in the dark morning sky.  The race was underway.   Even though the start time is staggered for the corrals, it was still pretty congested and hard to run faster than 10:30 and I was o.k. with that.  I liked the easy start pace.

Since it was dark, I just focused on getting through the first few miles and didn’t stop for many Kodak moments.  I also knew we’d be running the same course back to the finish.  My plan was to run the roads faster and slow down in the parks since the Disney characters and cast members would be cheering for the runners as we ran past.  I had my mind set to stop for Belle and Tiana if I saw them.

Once in the Magic Kingdom, I intended to pop into the Tomorrowland restroom for a potty break, another little Disney race secret.  All the restrooms in the park are available so you can avoid the port-o-potties. Plus, in a full service bathroom, I could readjust my tiara if need be.

I literally whizzed through Tomorrowland and moved onto Fantasyland to stop for a photo in front of the castle.

Once passed the castle, we ran through Liberty Square, where Tiana and Prince Naveen stood waiting. Of course, I stopped.   As I stood in line waiting for a photo with Princess Tiana, I met another Tiana, who I would continue to meetup with throughout the race.

After a quick photo with Tiana, I was on my way through Frontierland and then through the cast member exit where we were on the road again back towards Epcot.  Just outside the Grand Floridian, I bumped into Belle.  “Hi me”, she said when I posed for a photo with her.

Shortly afterwards, I met my Prince Charming outside the wedding pavilion.  His glass slipper was so fitting for a running princess.

On the return trip along World Drive, I decided to pose for some pictures that I missed on the way to the Magic Kingdom, like Captain Jack and some of the other Disney fellas.  But my camera died.  Fortunately, my Disney Princess running partner, Tiana, saved the day and snapped some photos for me.

Next to the characters and cast members, the spectators were superb and their signs were so entertaining.   “Worst parade ever!” “Villains run faster.”  “I am so proud of you complete stranger!”  With louds cheers and cow bells, they had such enthusiasm as the runners flew by.

The “hill” near mile 11 was definitely the roughest, just as @clairgp had warned me.  I had to walk most of the overpass, but as bad as that overpass was, my plantar faciitis heels didn’t bother me.  I guess all the stopping to visit with characters had its benefits.

After a quick photo in front of Spaceship Earth, I ran the last mile hard.  I wanted to finish under 3 hours and even with all the stops along the way, I met my goal 3 hour goal.

Like I told my friends future Disney Princesses, I would totally run it again and take just as long.  You just can’t take this race too seriously or you’ll miss all the Disney magic.

But next time, I’ll be Tiana.

Love My Abs Challenge, Week 3

If you’re just hearing about February’s Love My Abs Challenge for the first time, it’s not too late to join in the fun.  Basically, we started with a 100 dally ab exercises and tweeted about our achievements.  (This week we move up to 160 exercises.)  Then, each Wednesday, I’ll host a linky party for you to link up and share your recap post or add your Twitter handle.

That’s it.  Now sit-up and take action!  Show your abs some love this February!

Although I raised my reps to 140 this week, I didn’t try any new exercises.  With a half marathon only a few days away and to avoid injuring myself, I wanted to keep things simple and routine.  This week may have been less adventurous as far as ab exercises were concerned, but the results were pretty staggering nonetheless.

I think I see some abs forming there.

Kiss Me

For this week’s Music Monday, I’m co-hosting with Xmas Dolly and her Monday’s Music Moves Me crew: Lorie, Stacy, Callie and Cathy.  These ladies are such wonderful, supportive people and I am THRILLED to be part of this with them!

And what better way to show my love and appreciation then with a kiss? I mean, it’s Valentine ’s Day and all.  Well, how about a juicy, wet kiss from Little Lion Man?

He’s refined his kiss a bit since the holidays.  Now, he can blow you a kiss…

…with a little smack of a sound at the end. Muwah!

How stinking cute is that?! Don’t you just want to smother him with kisses?

Now it’s your turn. What love songs have you hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat?

Spinach Empanadas

PhotobucketThree weeks after my wisdom teeth extraction and I’m still on a forced soft foods diet and probably will be for another three weeks since my steenky holes are slow to heal and still pretty sensitive. *sigh*

Besides losing weight, another upside to my soft diet is that it’s forcing Iron Chef Allan and me to think beyond our family favorite menu staples.  During the process, we’ve dusted off some long forgotten cookbooks to find new dishes to try.  This Williams-Sonoma Spinach Empanada recipe was found in one of those dusty old cookbooks, The Best of Taste.  While rediscovering this cookbook, I found a few more recipes I’d like to sink my teeth gums into and if they’re tasty, you’ll find them here on Fridays for my weekly Friday Food Fight.

Although the recipe calls for pastry dough, I opted to use the empanada dough found in the freezer section of my supermarket.

Oh and see those yummy crispy edges?  Um yeah, about that…I couldn’t eat that part but the dough and filling was yummy for my gummy!

Spinach Empanadas

Ingredients

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 red onion, finely chopped

1 Tbsp garlic, finely chopped

2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced

½ lb spinach, chopped

¼ cup pine nuts

1 hard-boiled egg, peeled and chopped

½ tsp ground nutmeg

Salt

Fresh ground pepper

1 package of frozen empanada dough (10 count)

Directions

In skillet, heat olive oil over a medium heat.  Cook onion until soft, stirring often.  Add garlic and cook for about 1 minute.

Add tomatoes and cook until softened, about five minutes.

Add pine nuts and spinach.

Cook until spinach wilts, about five minutes.  Remove from heat.  Stir in chopped egg and nutmeg. Salt and pepper to taste.

Preheat oven to 350.

Spray baking sheet lightly with cooking spray.  Using a slotted spoon, add 1 Tbsp of filling to each round.

Lay on flat surface and fold dough in half.  Pinch edges with fork prongs to seal.

Carefully move filled empanada to baking sheet and brush with olive oil.  Then, repeat steps with remaining empanada rounds.

Bake for 25 minutes or until slightly golden brown on edges.

Serve plain, with side of aioli or a dash of Tabasco hot sauce. (I served mine with a cup of homemade tomato soup, but I’ll tell you all about that next week.)

Thanks for joining our weekly Friday Food Fight! Can’t wait to see what everyone is flinging this week!
