Music Monday: Love Songs

It’s February and love is in the air thanks to Hallmark, Hershey’s and florists.  Years ago, my husband and I decided to stop spending money on cheesy Valentine’s Day gifts and challenge each other to be more creative and thoughtful (and more frugal) when demonstrating our affection and admiration of each other.

One year, I loaded Allan’s MP3 player with a bunch of love songs and other tunes that made me think of him when I heard them.  I think I may do this again, but with some of my more recent favorite love songs, like Guster’s Do You Love Me?

Hubby isn’t a huge Guster fan, but this song always puts a smile on my face and a little pep in my step.  It’s a feel good song that sounds much like a sunshiny song from the 60s, reminiscent of something by Herman’s Hermits. So although he’s not a huge Guster fan, he’ll think of me bouncing around happily to the tune when he hears it.

I’d also add the soulful sound of James Morrison’s Precious Love. It’s another song reminiscent of the 60′s. I love the Ottis Redding sound and style of James Morrison’s demonstrates.

And since my hubbie is learning to play this song on the guitar, I would also add the acoustic version Train’s Marry Me. I couldn’t find any videos that weren’t blocked by Sony and the video is so lovely. I highly urge to follow the link and watch it on YouTube.

Believe

I suspect that this may be the last year Allana believes in Santa Claus.  She may have already let go of the idea ages ago, but she hasn’t shared that knowledge with anyone especially her little sister.  Honestly, I think she hasn’t shared her doubt with me because she knows I still believe.

For four years in a row, Allana has asked for a stuffed polka dot elephant from the Island of Misfit Toys featured in the animated classic, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  Each Christmas, Santa sent an apology letter explaining how the elves couldn’t make enough toys to fulfill every child’s request.  It broke my heart to see the disappointment in her face but our Santa wasn’t willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a small collector’s toy on eBay.

This Christmas, both girls have asked for the stuffed polka dot toy, but thankfully Santa has teamed up with the elves at Build-a-Bear and he will finally be able to fulfill this long awaited request.

I hope this small stuffed toy delivers another year for Allana believing in Santa Claus.

Shake Up Christmas

Being married to a Scotsman, I have been educated in the UK Christmas tradition of pop stars creating THE number one hit at Christmas.  Across the pond, pop stars fight over the coveted number one spot at Christmas. The movie, Love Actually, pokes humor at this silly UK Christmas custom.

Here in the States, a new Christmas single may hit the airwaves every once in a while but for the most part, artists simply put a new spin on old classics.

Well, it must be a blue moon Christmas because Train has released a new Christmas single this season, Shake Up Christmas.

The song fits my criteria for being the perfect Christmas jingle with its merry and jolly sound.  Apparently, the marketing department at Coca Cola shares the same opinion of Train’s new Christmas single as it has been featured in their Santa commercials this season.

So what Christmas songs are shaking things up for you this season?

Music Monday: Care

When I first heard Kid Rock sing this live along with Sheryl Crow, The Roots and T.I. at the  Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, it gave me goose bumps and moved me to tears.  Hard to believe a Kid Rock song could ever impact me like that, but it did.

I searched the Internet for a better video of this song, but this is the best I could find.  The message is still loud and clear no matter how poor quality the video. It seemed very fitting as we move into the holiday season.

The least that I can do is CARE.

Care is featured on Kid Rock’s new album Born Free, which will be released tomorrow, Tuesday, November 16.

Ray LaMontagne Moves Me

I’ve mentioned before how much I love Ray LaMontagne and how I would beg, steal or borrow to see him in concert since I missed his last tour through Tampa.  Friday night, I was fortunate enough to be given another chance to see Ray along with living legend Levon Helm and The Band for their co-headlining tour.

Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs were amazing live, but I prefer him best acoustic with just a steel string guitar and his soulful voice.  Allan was very embarrassed by my attempt to record Ray.  I was too embarrassed to record more than one song, but I found a video of Ray singing Like Rock & Roll and the Radio.  This song gives me goosebumps.  His pain in this song sounds so genuine.

Since Ray co-headlined with Levon Helms, Allan and I hoped they would perform The Weight, like they did on Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… and much to our pleasure, they did.

Ray had me tapping along and swaying in my seat and Ruth Eckerd Hall was a perfect venue for his blues/bluegrass infusion.  He truly moves me.

Music Monday: Happy Birthday, Soul Sister

Over the past nine years, I’ve watched my baby become a bright, beautiful little adult although it feels like overnight.

You’re growing up right before my eyes in a blink of an eye.

You’re kind.  You’re thoughtful and you bring such sunshine into the world with your lovely smile.

You may have your Daddy’s nose, but you’ve got you Mama’s boisterous belly laugh.

When you’re holding your baby brother, I love how you make him smile and giggle and how you tear up from all the joy your baby brother fills you with one tiny smile.

Every time I hear Soul Sister on the radio, I think of you belting out the notes and singing along as it blasts out from the car speakers.

With your kind, generous, caring nurturing way, you are truly our little soul sister.

Happy 9th Birthday, Allana.

I love you.

Music Monday: Get Ur Freak On

On Saturday, Allan and I will be hosting our annual adult Halloween party and I am so ready to get my freak on.

Since I’ve still got a saggy, baggy belly from where my baby bump once was, I am going for comfy and cute for this year’s look.  In case you’re curious about my costume, I’ll give you a hint.

As we draw closer Halloween, each week I will be sharing my favorite Halloween tunes for Music Monday. Share your favorite spine tingling tunes too… if you dare. Muhahahahahaha!

Music Monday: My Candy Girls

Next to the costumes, Halloween is all about the candy in this house. It’s amazing how a small morsel of sweetness will motivate my daughters to walk miles.

Yesterday, we visited Sea World’s Spooktacular Halloween. For this spooktacular event, Sea World sets up candy stations for the kids to trick-or-treat along on a path leading to Shamu’s Happy Harbor. I don’t know if it was the excitement of being at Sea World or a sugar rush from all the candy that kept my girls moving all day long. Either way, my candy girls had a great time.

Stay tuned for a complete review of our day at Sea World’s Spooktacular Halloween.

Music Monday: It’s Almost Halloween

I love Halloween.

As soon as I spot the pumpkins and the costumes lined up on the shelves in the stores, I am ready to get my freak on.  I’m hosting our adult Halloween party this year and you know a killer time will be had by all.  I can’t wait!

Although the stores have been full of the sinful sights and scents of the season for weeks, the weather finally cooled over the past few days and it truly feels almost like Halloween.

Music Monday: HOBnobbing with Sweet Caroline

First off, I think it’s only fair to tell you that I am NOT a Neil Diamond fan at all.  Not in the least!  BUT, every time I hear this song, it grows on me, especially when it conjures memories of good times and great friends.

Saturday night, we celebrated my hubby’s birthday with friends at one of our favorite watering hole, the House of Brews, which we’ve nicknamed “The HOB”.  On Saturday nights, there’s a decent guitarist and he always includes Sweet Caroline in his set.  Of course, the crowd (mostly made up of us) can’t resist belting out “BA BA BA” in the chorus.  It’s “SO GOOD! SO GOOD SO GOOD” and so much fun to be loud and obnoxious with your friends!

On another note, I want to thank everyone for linking up and participating in Music Monday with Run DMT for the past month.  Next week, October rolls in and I am ready to sink my teeth into Halloween.  So for the next four weeks, I will be sharing my favorite Halloween tunes. Share your favorite spine tingling tunes too, if you dareMuhahahahahaha!
