He’s My Boogieman

WARNING: The follow post may cause you to experience some nausea or sudden and uncontrollable projectile vomiting.

Like I warned you last week, once October rolls around, I dust off the spiny tingling Halloween tunes and start busting my Thriller moves.

Little Liam Man has been working on his new spooky look as well.  Thanks to allergy season, my Little Lion Man has been transformed into my little Boogieman.

Actually, KC and the Sunshine Band is too clean-cut and sunshiny to portray the true goriness of my little Boogieman.  On the other hand, White Zombie best expresses the horror we all feel when the green slime starts slipping down LLM’s face again.  Yes, this video represents our feelings more accurately, because I feel like screaming.

I promise to share something a little less grotesque next week.

For the next three Music Mondays, I will be sharing my favorite Halloween jamz.  I would love to hear what Halloween songs move your spirit.  Link up and play along…if you dare.  Muhahahahahahaha!

For Folk’s Sake

No man may be island, but Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café definitely sets itself apart in a sea of usual Tampa dining standards. Situated in heart of Seminole Heights, the red brick-colored building stands out as blatantly as the Seminole Heights Baptist Church.

Upon walking along Ella’s bowling ball edged path and stepping foot into the restaurant, its eclectic sensibility is evident by the art in the yard and its collections hanging on the walls.

Even the bar is a work of art.

In true Southern style, we were welcomed by everyone from the hostess, the bartender, the chef, the owner and lastly our server.  With his recommendation, we started our meal with hummus pesto spread drizzled with a balsamic reduction and served with warm soft pita.

Rumor has it that Ella’s organic Angus beef burgers are bar none.  My oldest daughter tried The Boring minus the toppings as she didn’t want them getting in the way of the meat.  I stole her beer-battered zucchini fritters so she wouldn’t have to subject herself to another veggie in the way of her burger.

Hubby ordered The Stuffed, a half-pound organic raised Angus beef patty stuffed with caramelized onion, gorgonzola and bacon served on a bed of arugula.  A name very fitting for this burger since Allan could only finish half of it.  So, I helped myself to his sweet potato waffle fries.

Even with food made fresh daily and all natural, organic ingredients, I steered away from the Angus beef burgers and ordered The Good, which may seem silly with menu full of interesting twists on soul food favorites.  But I couldn’t resist a homemade veggie burger and my decision didn’t disappoint me.  With a chickpea flour base, Ella’s veggie patty was chockfull of whole beans, such as black bean and garbanzo.   I made The Good even better and healthier by ordering a side salad to accompany my burger.  Besides, I needed to balance out the fried foods I pinched off my family’s plates.

Plus, my guilt-free meal allowed me to indulge in a true Southern summertime classic, Peach Cobbler.  Bourbon soaked peaches served warm with homemade vanilla ice cream was a sweet ending to a fantastic meal.

We’re planning another visit to Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café very soon, especially for Soul Food Sunday or a Friday night for the live music.  But we’ll certainly visit again in cooler weather to enjoy our meal on Ella’s darling outside dining deck which spotlights another work of art, a huge old oak tree.

A Poem for the Last Person I Spoke With on the Phone

So grateful to have you in our lives again

Especially for your listening ears when I need to vent

And you know I’m here for you

And your struggles with losing weight

Or losing your running shoes

Or losing your mind

When it comes to staying sane

I feel your pain

But at least we can laugh about it

Or about crying while running on a treadmill

Or my lack of fine parenting skills

And we’ll cry from laughing so hard

But that’s just me doing my part

Because we’re bonding, bitch.

This lovely ode has been submitted to Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop.

Sea World’s Christmas Celebration

“Well, ya  comin’?”

Where?

“To the North Pole, of course! This is the Polar Express!”

Upon entering Sea World’s Christmas Celebration, it did indeed feel as though we stepped into magical winter wonderland.  On a cool crisp Florida evening, dazzling lights and snowflakes cascaded around my family in The Christmas Market.  My girls (Allana and Emmalynn) and their cousin (Meghan) happily danced in the drifts of snow bubbles.  Grandma and Liam giggled and played in the snow too.

Then, the animal ambassadors told us that the sea lions, Clyde and Seamore, desperately wanted Santa to stop at Sea World this year, so we scurried on our way to Clyde and Seamore’s Countdown to Christmas to offer some Christmas cheer.  With the help of their trainers, an elf, an otter and a walrus, they managed to make everything merry in time for Christmas.

We couldn’t leave the park without riding the Polar Express and visiting Santa, so next we hopped on The Polar Express Experience located in the Wild Artic.  The train ride was a bit intense for our girls, but we arrived in one piece and with our dinner still down.

We knew we had finally reached our frigid destination from the icy cold habitat we encountered once we exited the train.  A beluga whale greeted us and guided us on the way to Santa.  The elves and Santa were very excited to see us.  Santa thanked the girls for traveling so far to see him and for staying on the nice list this year.  Although they were star struck by jolly ol’ St. Nick, they remembered to share their Christmas wish lists with him.

As we made our journey back home, we ended the evening with a big bang and a breathtaking view of Sea World’s Festive Fireworks and Dazzling Lights choreographed to joyous holiday music.  And as the Sea of Trees shined over the center lake, their reflection glistened twice as many trees over the water.

Many other Orlando amusements parks charge an additional fee to participate in such extravagant holiday festivities, but all this magic and wonder is included with a Sea World admission every weekend night in December until the first weekend in January.

Once my girls heard that, they begged to go back this weekend with the whole gang again, of course.

Juneathon, Day 9

I’m not sure, but I think Run DMT Baby #3 may have changed positions and slid into a head down position because swimming was very challenging today.  Usually, swimming brings me a much welcomed relief, but I didn’t get that wonderful feeling of weightlessness today.  Instead, the baby felt very low and I struggled trying to swim a few laps.  But I did it!  Phew!

After swimming, I did some bicep and tricep curls.  I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I been doing a lot of weight training lately.  See, my family and I have a maternity portrait sitting with my good friend and fabulous photographer, Kelly, this weekend and I thought it would be nice to have some sort of arm muscle in the photos rather than flabby, fat chicken wings flapping in the wind.  But who am I kidding?  In the photos, all you’re going to notice is the massive bump and not the “muscle” I worked so hard tried so desperately to sculpt.  Can’t blame a mama for trying, right?

Juneathon, Day 2

Not only is today Day 2 of the Juneathon, but it is also National Running Day. *sigh* How I wish I could honor the day with a good run! Heck, even a good wog would have been nice.  Oh well.  So rather than a run, I simply walked (more like waddled) for 20 minutes.  I also did 50 squats and 30 push-ups.

On a side note, I also had my 32 week OB visit today.  I gained 6 pounds since my last appointment four weeks ago. UGH! I’m also measuring at 34 weeks.  Double grunt! Plus, they detected sugar in my urine.  O.K. so it might have had something to do with the super size bowl of Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch and large helping of watermelon I ate for breakfast this morning and maybe even the volume of ice cream I ate over Memorial Day weekend or the several refills of Slushies I shared with my 4 year old yesterday at Target.  But I swear, for the most part, I’m being so good. Looks like it’s Kashi for the remainder of my pregnancy.  Blah. It’s going to be a long, not-so-sweet summer.

Joining the Juneathon

Today kicked off the official start of the Juneathon and I did my best to join in the fun.  After all, I’ve got my eyes on the prize:  a pair of Vibram Five Fingers Classics.

Although my wogging days have been temporarily postponed until my postpartum days, I chose to ease into the Juneathon with 20 minutes of prenatal yoga and weight training.  This big ol’ bump may keep me from wogging, but it can’t keep me from a few biceps and tricep curls.  I also threw in some squats and lunges in for good measure.

If you missed joining the Juneathon today, there’s always tomorrow.  In fact, tomorrow (June 2) is National Running Day, so get out there and run for me or run with virtual Run DMT.
