Clearwater Marathon Recap

Simply striving to qualify for Bronze Level Marathon Maniacs, Chrissy, Larisa, Marie and I had no real strategy or finish time in mind for the Clearwater Marathon.  After completing the Disney Marathon a week earlier, we anticipated taking many walking breaks throughout the course.  With three large bridges in the first half of the course, we already planned to walk those.

At the start, the four of us all felt pretty good and no one was sore from last week’s marathon.  We started out slow and around mile one, we began our trek across the Clearwater Causeway (the first bridge) into Clearwater Beach.  We ran slowly over the incline and considered walking down, but we all felt as though we could run, so we kept a slow 10:30 pace down the bridge.

Around mile 3, we stopped for a stretching break since our legs were all nicely warmed up and then walked through the first water stop.  After a few photos and a quick restroom break, everyone felt refreshed enough to continue running through Clearwater Beach.

Then, we reached the Sandy Key Bridge and it was time for another forced walking break.

View of Clearwater Causeway from Sand Key Bridge

Once we reached the bottom of the bridge, we started running again, especially since we knew our Suncoast Striders family would be cheering for us outside Sand Key Park.  As we approached the 4.5 water station, Maribel and Daffodil cheered the loudest.  Obviously, we stopped for drinks, orange slices and a few photos.

To our surprise, our friend, Carrie, ran with us through Sand Key Park.  It was so much fun to catch up with her for that quick mile through the park.

Back at the entrance, the Striders cheered and hollered for us once more.  With close to 60 people managing one water station, the Strider power and energy was invigorating.  It was just what we needed for the next nine miles along Gulf Boulevard.

Those were the longest nine miles ever.  Apart for the water stations, we didn’t see a soul for miles.  No spectators.  No cowbells (and I gotta have more cowbell). Nothing.  Despite being surrounded by beautiful beach condos and gorgeous homes, not one beach dweller cheered for us.  It was just the four of us and thank God we had each other to get through it.

Unfortunately, this was the point that my Achilles began to ache and I started to fall behind from my friends.  I needed to stay right at 10:30 mm to avoid any pain.

At mile 10, we met the Largo United Soccer League.  Next to the Striders, this was my favorite water stop.  These girls lifted our spirits with an impromptu performance of You’re Gonna Miss Me by Lulu and the Lampshades.  I honestly wanted to hang out with them a little longer just to learn their cup rhythm.  Instead, the tune played over and over in my head for the next 16.2 miles.

Eventually, we caught up with our Strider friends Cindy and Clark.  Cindy.was running her first marathon at 60 years young.

Just past the halfway point, we turned onto Park Boulevard (the third bridge) for our return journey along the Pinellas Trail.  We remembered this bridge all too well from the Holiday Halfathon.  We walked it then too.  Funny, it was gray and yucky that day too.

At mile 15, I took a quick potty break and realized my knees were beginning to hurt so I took three ibuprofen.  Larisa waited for me outside the bathroom and we ran together for a bit until we caught up with Marie and Chrissy at the base of the first Pinellas Trail overpass, which we all walked.

See, although there are only 3 bridges along the said “flat” course,  there also three trail overpass which as are just as difficult to run over as the previous bridges.

Mile 16 wound us through the same park we ran through for the Holiday Half.  We were rewarded for our efforts with water posing as beer.

Around this point, I was really struggling with pain.  Although I expected to experience Charley horses or issues with my heels, I was feeling pain in my knees.  To avoid any further pain, I now needed to slow down my pace to around 11:00-12:00 which caused me to fall even further behind from my friends.  As long as I could see them, I was fine.

Around mile 20, I caught up to my friends at the water station just as Daffodil phoned me to get a full race report and our anticipated finish time.  “I’m in a lot of pain,” I reported.  “But we should finish in about an hour.”

To everyone’s surprise, Chrissy and Marie informed us at mile 20 that they’d like to PR.  “I can’t do it,” I reply. “But you should definitely go for it!”  With that, Chrissy, Marie and Larisa take off to PR the marathon.

For the next two miles, I was in a really ugly place in my head.  What was I thinking?!  Why am I doing this?!  We were supposed to stay together!  I hate these stupid Clearwater races and their dumb ass bridges! Why is Land O Lakes so flat?  Why am I the only in pain?

Those are some of the PG-rated thoughts that boomed through my head.  I found myself walking more than before and I cussed every overpass.  I really hated myself and my legs for hurting so much.  I hated the long stretches along the trail.   A few random cyclists passed me and I felt very alone for the next couple of miles.  If it wasn’t for the water stations and the police manning the intersections, I don’t think I would have seen anyone.  Flashbacks of Space Coast flooded my mind.

At the base of the third overpass, I reached mile 22.  I stopped for another potty break. (I was drinking a lot of Gatorade and water throughout the race.)  I took three more ibuprofen.  It was time to focus.  I needed to shake the horrible thoughts happening in my head and finish the race.  “C’mon there’s only four more miles.  That’s nothing.  You got this!”

Although I ran around an 11:00 mm, those were probably my strongest miles.  Somehow, I overcame the mental and physical hurdles and I felt great again.  Maybe it was all the ibuprofen (I’m sure my liver is failing and I need dialysis.), but for whatever reason, my whole outlook changed. I then began to catch up to other runners.

At mile 25, I wouldn’t allow myself to hit that same wall I faced at Disney.  I clicked through my MP3 player for the right tunes to help me finish the race.  “Pitbull, take me home!” I hollered.  “Don’t stop the paaaarrrty!”

The next mile led us through a gorgeous residential neighborhood.  Thank goodness for the orange cones which I followed like breadcrumbs, because I’m sure I would have been lost with all the turns.

The last 0.25 mile of the race was the most ridiculous.  As much as I wanted to be finished, I stopped to take a photo of this part of the course: a spiral pedestrian path leading back to Coachman Park.  I thought my ankles would snap.

At the bottom of the spiral path, I was so disoriented and confused.  I didn’t know which way to go.  Once again, the orange cones showed me the way.

As I approached the finish line, my friends ran to my side and the Marathon Mamas ran across the finish line with me.

Of course, I cried.

I did it.

Overall Place 244/282

We did it. These crazy-ass determined Marathon Mamas earned a spot in the Marathon Maniacs without crawling across the finish line and lived to tell about it.

As for Chrissy and Marie, they beat their Disney time by nine minutes.  First-time marathoner, Cindy, finished strong too and we were all there to cheer for her.

At the post-race party in the park, we celebrated two marathons in one week and still walking with ice cold beer (not water posing as beer).

*Big THANK YOU to my friends, David, Aaron and Larisa, for sharing their wonderful photos with me!*

As this vlog demonstrates, I’m recovering well after the Disney Marathon.  I feel great!  I did fail to mention that after the recording, I was off to volunteer at my kids’ running club.  So much for resting during my recovery week!

I only ran/walk a mile and my 7 year old daughter helped me stick a very slow, easy pace, but I did feel a little something in my Achilles afterwards.  Lots of stretching today!

Watching the video, I just realized that I received a notification during my recording which is the “DROID!” you hear at 3:27.  Whoops. I forgot to turn down the phone volume and/or turn off the notifications. Damn, Facebook!  I should have lifted up my backside, like I let one rip.

Yep, I toot “DROID”.

Random Thoughts About Running Two Marathons, Recovery and unTrack Tuesday

FinishI did it.  I ran the Disney Marathon and I redeemed my Space Coast time.  I even redeemed my original Disney Marathon time from 4 years ago.  I didn’t expect to beat my previous Disney Marathon time, but I did.  Had the weather been in my favor, I may have finished closer to my Gasparilla time, but there’s always another marathon, like this Sunday.

That’s right. I’m running another marathon a week later although running might not be the best term.  I may be crawling through these 26.2 miles.

Since I am putting so much stress on body in such short amount of time, I will be mostly resting this week, except for walking the track while assisting at my kids’ running club. No cardio or anything high-impact for me, just lots of stretching and sporting my new compression sleeves.

I wore these Zensah sleeves during the marathon (which I purchased at Suncoast Running) and they ROCKED.  Around mile 20 I experienced some charley horses.  The sleeves prevented my calves from spasms which normally cause me to stumble or fall over.   I will definitely wear them again this Sunday.

As for the rest of my attire, I’m not really sure what I’ll wear for Sunday’s marathon.  The weather has been all over the thermometer this winter.  It’s been a very warm winter so far and it looks like this Sunday will be another warm day.

Here’s something pretty cool.  Run DMT was selected as one of the Top 100 Health and Fitness Sites for 2013!  But I need your votes to stay in the top ten!  So, vote for Run DMT!

And while we’re spreading the love, I have to give a big THANK YOU to Skirt Fairy of Running Skirts for holding a Mini Dot Athletic Skirt at the Disney Expo for me.  Thanks to her accommodating me, I was able to save on shipping, try the skirt on for the right fit and have it for the race the next day.

red polka dot athletic skirt

I know what you’re thinking, “You’re not supposed to wear anything new for a race.  That’s a beginner’s mistake.”  Well, you’re not supposed to do marathon a week apart either, but that’s how I roll.  I’m a mother runner living on the edge.  I throw caution, running skirts and compression sleeves into the wind.

After a marathon, I always experience pain in the weirdest places.  I mean, I have the usual pain in my quads, my Achilles and my knees, but now, I can add a pulled muscle in my neck to the unusual post-marathon pains.  Amazingly enough, I have no plantar fasciitis pain! (Thanks to my Feetures! PF sleeves no doubt!)  A friend recommended a massage.  I think that is a great idea.  Walking up and down the stairs is killing me, but today seems less painful than yesterday.

I know you are anxiously waiting for my recap and you can expect that tomorrow.  So, stay tuned!

Random Thoughts about a Turkey Trot, Happy Feet, a Happy Dance and Track Tuesday

The last couple of weeks haven’t been the greatest in the running sense.  My heels have been giving me grief and I decided I needed a few days of rest.  No speed work last Tuesday and no running on Wednesday, but on Thanksgiving morning I decided to join the Daily Mile’s Feed the Turkey Virtual Turkey Trot 5K to benefit the Hurricane Sandy victims.

I didn’t push myself and just enjoyed the run along the quiet roads in my ‘hood.  Running on Thanksgiving is always such a treat.  It feels good to burn calories before a feast and the tranquil roads rejuvenate me.  It lifts my spirit and I drift away.

I so needed that run.  And even if my Garmin died just before the 5K, I still loved it.

A few days of rest did me a world of good, because I had a much better run on Saturday for my 14 miles.  For that long run, I tried to keep an easy pace.  Whenever I pushed it, I cussed out Chrissy, Marie and Larisa I felt it in my heels and my left knee.   So, I maintained a 10:00-11:00 pace and I felt great afterwards.

On Small Business Saturday, I dropped a small fortune on new shoes for the whole family at Suncoast Running.  At least I saved 20% on it all!  Thanks to the discount, I finally could afford a new pair of Brooks Trance 11.  Although moving into a wide limits my color choices, at least I can enjoy a pretty turquoise shoe.  I know.  I know.  It’s not about the color.  Whatever.  It totally is about the color and to prove it, expect to see some Sweat Pink hot pink laces on my new kicks.
Plantar Fasciitis Sleeve
I also purchased some Feetures! compression sleeves specific for plantar fasciitis.  As soon as I slipped those bad boys on, I immediately felt a difference in my heels.  They ROCKED and you better believe I purchased two!  (They only come one per package.)  Hopefully, I’ll get another pair in my Christmas stocking instead of coal (hint…hint…Santa) because these gems are going to get worn.  Seriously, I need one pair for running and another just for sleeping.  New shoes and compression sleeves make my feet very happy.

Interesting side note and a total selling point for me, the Suncoast Running Associate mentioned that his father wrote a short review for the Tampa Tribune praising the sleeve.

Pain free speedwork (Thanks to my new Feetures! PF sleeves.) defintiely has me doing a happy dance.

Happy feet.
I’ve got some happy feet.

Random Thoughts about a Break or Two, Burpees and My New Shoes

My plantar faciitis began bothering me again which I believe to be a result of old shoes.  I’ve put a lot a miles on my shoes since November when I bought them.  Since my left heal has been giving me trouble, I haven’t ran since last Wednesday and I ordered myself some new lavender Trace 10 running shoes from Brooks.com.  They should arrive tomorrow, so hopefully I can get at least one 3 mile run in and break them in before my 5K on Saturday.

The Hare Racing Experience this Saturday is the only race I have one this month.   Although I never ran it before, I’ve heard great things about it so I’m excited about it.  This race will be even more fun since I’ll be joined by family members running/walking their first race.  We’re all participating in this race to benefit epilepsy in honor of my niece, Meghan.

I’ve had some amazing opportunities fall into my lap lately and I’m feeling so blessed for each of them.  I’m a grateful for every opportunity and the doors they have opened for me.  Thank you.

And speaking of opportunities, did you hear that I was featured on Another Runner Mother?  Go read my interview and leave some comment love.

On the subject of things I love…last week I received some new sandals from The Walking Company which my PF feet totally love. My ABEO sandals are so supportive that I don’t feel any heel pain at all.  I’m going to do a full review of the shoes, but here’s a sneak peek.  I really love them.

My girls are on spring break this week and we have lots of fun planned, however, my husband thought I was planning too much fun and the girls would need a break from their break.  So, today we’re having a quiet lie in and we’ll go to our community pool around lunch time.  I’m really looking forward to swimming since I haven’t run in almost a week and I have all this energy pent-up inside.  I’m going to have to tread water to expend some of it.
Speaking of expending energy, I’m almost finished with my push-up challenge.  I finished Week 6/Day 3/Level 1 yesterday, but I still have to complete another exhaustion test tomorrow.  I’m really nervous about it, which is so silly because it’s not like I could “fail” the test, but I’m afraid I won’t be anywhere near 100 push-ups.  At my last exhaustion test, I did only 50.  I’d like to be somewhere between 60-70 push-ups and beyond the half-way point, but we’ll see.

I’m excited about my next challenge for April! This month, we’re ”Springing into April with a 30 Day Burpee challenge“!  Yay.  *sound of crickets chirping*

Although I received a lot of resistance to this challenge at first, the response has been quite the opposite which is really motivating.  Follow #30burpees on Twitter if you need some motivation.  People hate burpees but their strong detest for burpees pushed them to be part of the challenge.  It’s pretty funny.

Basically, we started with one burpee on Day 1 and we’ll add one burpee each day after that, ending with 30 burpees on Day 30.  Simple, right?  hee hee  Find out more information here and join the linky party while you’re there.

Random Thoughts about Soft Foods and Going Soft

Yesterday I had my follow up with my dental surgeon for my wisdom teeth extraction.  Everything looks good. My body is just taking its sweet ass time to heal itself.  *sigh*  I’m still experiencing pain particularly in the bottom left side of my jaw, but the 800 mg ibuprofen helps control the pain.

He also said he wants me to continue on a soft foods diet for 2-3 more weeks until my next follow-up visit.  Have I mentioned how shitty a soft foods diet is?  If someone has any suggestions besides potatoes, toast, pasta, oatmeal, soups, yogurt or applesauce, I am all ears.  I feel like I’m carb loading without the luxury of being able to burn the carbs.  Speaking of carb loading, my doctor said I could drink beer which is good because wine was burning my steenky holes.

And if someone tells me one more time about all the weight they lost on a soft foods diet, I may just throw my yogurt at them.  I haven’t lost a pound because my body just doesn’t work like that.  It’s like my body feels a famine has hit and shifted into survival mode to begin storing fat.

I haven’t started running yet, but my surgeon said I could start whenever I feel ready.  I figure I would just judge the pain each morning.  If one day I wake up and feel nothing, then I’ll run.  That just hasn’t happened yet.

On good days when the pain is minimal, I try to do house work.  However, I think I’ve tried to do too much too soon because the next day, my jaw hurts like a mother.  Then, I waste the day doing nothing but lying around until the pain subsides.  It really sucks.

I really hope I feel better enough to run an easy 3 miles soon because Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon is only 2 weeks away.  YIKES!  Someone please tell me that I can do this.  I’m sure it’s all
in my head, but I feel like I’ve lost my strength.  I feel so weak, which I am sure is a result of the pain and this stupid soft food diet. I guess you really are what you eat.   I would love to be able to run an easy 10 miles with my friends, Faith and Chrissy this Sunday.  We’ll see.

The worst part is I brought it upon myself, like a sadist.  I should have done it 20 years ago when I was younger and my body would have healed faster and my parents would have paid for it and my mom would have played nursemaid and done all my laundry for me.  But I was too busy having fun living life.  Now I have a real life with a family and children depending on me and I can’t do squat except sit around eating fattening soft foods all day.

But there is an upside to all of this!  I’m being forced to rest which probably a good thing given the problems I had with my heel and my self-diagnosed plantar fasciitis.  Either all the ibuprofen in my system has helped with the issues in my foot or not being able to run.  Either way, I haven’t felt any pain in my foot for weeks.  When I wake up in the morning, I can walk flat instead of using the sides of my feet.  It’s all very strange.

Speaking of plantar fasciitis, Suncoast Running is hosting an injury prevention clinic this Thursday at 6:30.  I’m planning to attend even though I seem to have healed my heel, but I’d still like to go to learn how to avoid the issue in the future.  Hopefully, I’ll learn some good tips.

Mmmmmm…tips.  Great.  Now, I’m hungry for beef tips.

Food, Glorious Food!

Ten days after my wisdom teeth were extracted, I’m still experiencing pain because my bottom left steenky hole is giving me trouble.  I can control the pain with 800 mg ibuprofen, but sometimes at night the pain is so intense, I need to take vicodin.

Besides the pain, I’m still on a soft foods diet which is so annoying and almost as painful.  Even soft foods like toast, oatmeal or bananas get trapped in my steeky holes which causes me pain and then I’d rather not eat it.  So, that leaves me slurping up soup and wishing for chicken wings.

Speaking of chicken wings and other deliciousness, I’ve been torturing myself with food porn on Pinterest.  When I first created my recipe board, it was titled, “Eat, Drink and be Merry”, but when I was laid up in bed due to my wisdom teeth, I decided to change the name to Food, Glorious Food.  Everything I came across looked so good.  I can’t wait to be off this soft diet to sink my teeth into those dishes.  It’s sad how much I miss real food and beer.

But now think I should change my Pinterest recipe board title to “Food Porn”, due to the primeval sounds I make looking at each photo and recipe.   “Ooooooo.  Oh wow. What I could do with that.”

So thanks to my stinky holes, I’m a bit impotent in the kitchen these days, but once these pits heal, I’ll be doing the dirty deed again.   For now, I’ll just keep drooling over my Pinterest food porn and all the food, glorious food.

Random Thoughts about Pain and Steenky Holes

Last Thursday, I had four wisdom teeth extracted. The days leading up to the procedure, I was a basket case, but everyone assured me I would only experience some pain and discomfort for a few days and then I would be fine.  I figured I would be up and running (literally) by mid-week.

Nope.  Five days later, I’m in excruciating pain.  I can control the pain with the help of 600-800 mg ibuprofen, but if I forget to take any pain reliever, then I’m suffering all over again.  It’s awful.

Since the pain was so bad, I assumed I had dry sockets and begged the surgeon to squeeze me in for a quick examination.  No dry sockets, but I’m just taking a really long time to heal which has something to do with my… eh hem…age and deep, long roots that touched my jaw bone which required about 1 mm of my jaw bone to be removed.

I was told after the surgery to refrain from any exercise until my follow-up on the 23rd, but according the surgeon after today’s visit, I may need to wait even longer due to my slow healing process.  Fantastic.

This means I may have to wait even longer to resume my half marathon training.  I had hoped to be able to pick up at 10 miles this Saturday, but I won’t know until the 23rd and even then, I may not be able to jump back into running.  With the Rock ‘ Roll marathon only few weeks away, this is not good.

Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking.

Plus, I’m on this soft food diet. Have I mentioned how much I love food, I mean real food?

Being laid up for a few days, I’ve spent a lot of time watching TV and surfing through Pinterest.  Playing around on Pinterest staring at food I can’t eat was torture.  But at least I have some fabulous menus planned when I can real food again and some wonderful play date ideas when I’m ready to get out and play again and some outstanding organizational skills to start implementing when I’m feeling better.

Yeah, I’ll get right on that.

I feel a bit like Ren of Ren & Stimpy because all I have left are stinky steenky holes.

I wish I had photos to share of my gnarly, bloody wisdom teeth to at least make this post a bit more interesting.

But I got nothing.  No photos.  No running, just Pinterest to make me feel even more inadequate amuse me and make me hungry.  Fan-f*cking-tastic.

Janathon 2012 – Day 7

I made it to 9 miles.  I was a little worried about my heel, but it didn’t give me trouble until about mile 8.  Before my run, I walked about 0.5 mile and stretched.  I also stretched through the run so I guess all that helped.  Although hours later now, my heel is giving me some trouble, so it’s time for the frozen water bottle trick.

Speaking of water bottles, I left my water bottle at the 1 mile mark, so there weren’t many water breaks during this run.  I actually ran about 7 miles without water, which I think is pretty amazing.  Granted not the smartest move, because I usually get pretty thirsty throughout the course, however, I was surprised at how far I could go with a water break.

Just to do something different, I decided to run the Gasparilla Distance Classic 15K this year instead of the half.  Out of curiosity, I looked up my stats from the Minnie Marathon 15K to compare my past time today’s run.

Yep, I got my work cut-out for me this year.

Random Thoughts about Joining the Janathon

Janathoon 2012 Participant LogoIt’s been over a week since I last ran.  I caught a really nasty cold a few days before Christmas and then my Achilles started bothering me again.  Even though I wasn’t running, I wore my running shoes to help my heel.

Christmas Eve, I spent a lot of time on my feet cleaning the house barefoot and I think it only aggravated my Achilles more, which I find so ironic.  With all the talk about barefoot running, you would think it would help the situation.  I seem to experience the opposite whenever I spend my days barefoot.  It only makes my Achilles feel worse.

Not running for a week combined with bad eating habits made me feel weak and sluggish, so I decided to break my week long break with a three mile run this morning.  I also wanted to test out my newly refurbished Garmin.  With my foot still giving me some trouble, I was a bit slow-moving to get out the door.

Weather.com forecasted a 50% chance of rain by 8:00, but an orange-pink sky appeared to say otherwise.  Then about halfway into my run, the wind picked up and the sky began to turn dark gray.  The storm rolled in right on time which soaked me and my new-to-me Garmin.  GreatLet the Garmin corroding began!

The  Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon is only five weeks away and after this morning’s pathetic run, I’m not feeling very confident about my performance in that race.  It may be time for an intervention.

Suncoast Running is offering a boot camp training program plan designed specifically for the short turn-around time for this race and I plan to find out more about it at the informational meeting tomorrow evening.

Obviously, priority number one is to get back into a regular running routine.  I’m hoping the Janathon will help with that.

I joined the Janathon for my second year.   Basically, all participants commit to running or some work-out every day and log it online at Free Running.  Lord knows, I need the accountability aspect of the Janathon to help me stay focused and motivated.  Although this year, I doubt I’ll win any prizes as I’m having my wisdom teeth extracted on January 13 and I’ll be down for a few days after the surgery.  Nice, huh?  Yep, I already have an excuse in place for slacking off.

As for getting back into a regular running routine, I plan to run 4 miles tomorrow with some intervals later in the week, followed by 6-7miles on Saturday.  I just need to get moving again.
