Run DMT - I'm a mom on the run!

Adios, my ABEO Sandals

What’s black, white and red all over?

My feet painted with tan lines from my favorite flip-flops.

Last spring, The Walking Company sent me a pair of Red Reptile Sunrise ABEO B.IO. System Sandals and I wore them all the time.  The sandals complimented my casual Florida style, all my favorite sundresses and oodles of outfits and of course, I received incalculable amounts of compliments every time I stepped out in them.

Since these shoes are specifically designed for plantar fasciitis, I literally lived in these lovely, sunny sandals.  I walked everywhere in them, which made my feet very happy and my plantar fasciitis heels never complained.

My ABEO Red Reptile Sunrise Sandals escorted me to numerous parties and we danced the night away on more than one occasion.

I covered countless miles of amusement parks in them.

I explored the streets of New York City in these sandals.

Sadly, a year later, there’s little life left in them now. My once super cushioned sandals now offer little support anymore.

So it seems the sunrise has set on my red reptile ABEO sandals.

We had a good run, my ABEO sandals and me.

Saucony Virrata Running Shoes Review

saucony_virrataSaucony sent me a beautiful and technical pair of running shoes: Virrata.  Being the girlie stunner I am, I absolutely loved the color, but as any runner knows, it’s not about the color.  It’s about the comfort and these Saucony Virrata running shoes are beautifully bright, lightweight and comfortable!

I wore the Virrata shoes to the Junior Gasparilla to break the shoes in before my first run in them.  At first, I found the arch a little odd because it added a little more lift than my usual Brooks Trance running shoes.  However, my feet quickly adjusted to the arch lift.  I also normally wear a wide, but the Virrata toe box offered enough space which didn’t cause any toes pain or pinch my bunions.

For my first run in my new Saucony Virrata running shoes, I wore them to my speedwork session last Tuesday.  I really loved the lightweight and flexibility of the shoes, which is perfect for sprints and like the Virrata specifications promise, it allowed my foot to move naturally.

The specifications also tout the Virrata as being “a feather-light, ultra flexible show with advanced cushioning that promotes a powerful stride”. Furthermore, the Virrata are “engineered to engage and activate a runner’s own natural cushioning, stabilization and stride,” which is a perfect design for sprints…

…and obviously, jumping.

After training 1000 of miles for five marathons, I’ve become accustomed to heavy cushioned shoes and the additional weight on my feet for that added cushion.  After wearing the feather-light Virrata a few times, my long distance running shoes feel so heavy!

I always been fan of Saucony running shoes and I really do love these Virrata running shoes for sprints and short distances, but this first release Virrata shoe is a bit narrow for my widespread plantar fasciitis bunion ridden feet.  If the shoe came in a wide, I would definitely wear them for longer runs.

If you have dainty, skinny, no problem feet, then these Saucony Virrata running shoes are perfect for you.  If neon isn’t your thing, the Saucony Virrata also come in a variety of colors and are available for men in neon and non-neon colors as well.

Random Thoughts about Combating Fitness, Fat, Fatigue, Some New Shoes and Track Tuesday

Even with hubby out of town last week, still I managed to step up my fitness game.  My friend, Jackie, teaches body combat and she invited me to try her Friday class.  I love kick-boxing and martial arts aerobics so I knew I would love her class.  It was definitely ab-kicking fun!  My arms, shoulders and legs were sore for days!  I love delayed on set pain!

Of course, to participate in Jackie’s Body Combat class, I had to take advantage of the YMCA child care, but Little Lion Man was not happy to be left there.  I’ve never had to deal with anxiety separation before, but thank goodness he settled in soon after I left him.  I was so worried about getting pulled in the middle of my jab, jab workout.

Last Wednesday, I visited Pura for spin.  The Wednesday class is now a Heart Rate class, but I’m not quite how to make heads or tails of this information.   Apparently, I need to stay in the higher range a little longer.  In other words, I need to turn the gear a bit more to the right to get my heart rate going.  (On a completely different subject, isn’t this shot amazing?! I took it with my DNA.  Just a little Verizon Wireless plug there for you.)

I wanted to do a tempo run on Thursday, but that never happened.  I didn’t realize hubby needed to leave for 5:30 and my body just didn’t want to get up and run at 4:00 a.m.  Sometimes, you just have to let your body get some rest.  Besides, I knew I would need to rest to tend to three kids on my own for a couple of days.

Saturday I ran 10 miles in the ‘hood, which was a tough run for me because my legs were cranky tired from Friday’s combat class.  Plus, it was cold, much colder than they projected the overnight low to be.  I was freezing!  You would have thought the cold weather would make run faster!  Nope.  I’m like a cold-blooded creature.  I move slower in cold weather.

Sunday, my family and I visited to Busch Gardens, so no cycling adventure for me.  Monday, I had another Moms Squad appearance on the news, so work-out yesterday either, but I did love my abs!  I’m up to 200 hundred reps now and I actually noticed my love handles beginning to slowly melting away.

For today’s Track Tuesday, I did not want to get out of bed, but I knew my friends would kill me if I flaked.  This is where running partners and accountability really does keeps you…well…accountable.  As bad as I wanted to stay in bed, I didn’t want to let anyone down.  So, I reluctantly got out of bed and finished today’s stupid sprints over with no matter how tired I felt.  Plus, I really wanted to test out these new Virrata Saucony shoes.  They’re so light and really perfect for speedwork.

I decided to use the interval training mode on my Garmin.  I know what you’re wondering and no, I’ve never used it before today.  I usually just manually record each lap.  So, for the first time in Track Tuesday history and for the 5 years I’ve owned my Garmin, I actually used the interval setting and totally screwed it up.  LOL But at least now I know how to use it!

As for the rest of the week, I’ll do another spin class at Pura this week, probably a tempo run on Thursday, but I’m not sure about the rest of the week.  I may rest since I have the Gasparilla Half Marathon on Sunday.  I’m shooting for a 2:10 to beat my Frankenfooter Half Marathon time.

What work-outs do you have planned for this week?  Do you use an interval setting on your watch or Garmin?

Random Thoughts about a Turkey Trot, Happy Feet, a Happy Dance and Track Tuesday

The last couple of weeks haven’t been the greatest in the running sense.  My heels have been giving me grief and I decided I needed a few days of rest.  No speed work last Tuesday and no running on Wednesday, but on Thanksgiving morning I decided to join the Daily Mile’s Feed the Turkey Virtual Turkey Trot 5K to benefit the Hurricane Sandy victims.

I didn’t push myself and just enjoyed the run along the quiet roads in my ‘hood.  Running on Thanksgiving is always such a treat.  It feels good to burn calories before a feast and the tranquil roads rejuvenate me.  It lifts my spirit and I drift away.

I so needed that run.  And even if my Garmin died just before the 5K, I still loved it.

A few days of rest did me a world of good, because I had a much better run on Saturday for my 14 miles.  For that long run, I tried to keep an easy pace.  Whenever I pushed it, I cussed out Chrissy, Marie and Larisa I felt it in my heels and my left knee.   So, I maintained a 10:00-11:00 pace and I felt great afterwards.

On Small Business Saturday, I dropped a small fortune on new shoes for the whole family at Suncoast Running.  At least I saved 20% on it all!  Thanks to the discount, I finally could afford a new pair of Brooks Trance 11.  Although moving into a wide limits my color choices, at least I can enjoy a pretty turquoise shoe.  I know.  I know.  It’s not about the color.  Whatever.  It totally is about the color and to prove it, expect to see some Sweat Pink hot pink laces on my new kicks.
Plantar Fasciitis Sleeve
I also purchased some Feetures! compression sleeves specific for plantar fasciitis.  As soon as I slipped those bad boys on, I immediately felt a difference in my heels.  They ROCKED and you better believe I purchased two!  (They only come one per package.)  Hopefully, I’ll get another pair in my Christmas stocking instead of coal (hint…hint…Santa) because these gems are going to get worn.  Seriously, I need one pair for running and another just for sleeping.  New shoes and compression sleeves make my feet very happy.

Interesting side note and a total selling point for me, the Suncoast Running Associate mentioned that his father wrote a short review for the Tampa Tribune praising the sleeve.

Pain free speedwork (Thanks to my new Feetures! PF sleeves.) defintiely has me doing a happy dance.

Happy feet.
I’ve got some happy feet.

Random Thoughts about Sweating Pink, a Cool Point and Track Tuesday

The other day, I received my Sweat Pink shirt from my SPA sisters at Fit Approach.  It’s so soft and comfy and fits perfectly.  I couldn’t wait to wear it and when I did, lots of people commented on it.

I almost love the shirt as much as my SPA sisters!  Between the races, their fitness achievements and healthy lifestyles, these women are so inspiring!

Last week, I mentioned how I bought two pairs of shoes and needed to test them out on the treadmill.  Well, the Asics GT-2170 won. I ran one mile in the shoes and they felt great.  Then, I tried the Nike shoes and couldn’t even run 30 seconds in them before I felt a weird pain across the toes.  So, the Nike were returned to The Running Center.

A while back, in the midst of our Florida summer heat and triathlon season, Trigger Point Performance Therapy sent me a Cool Point, the Original Hand Cooler to test and review.

“Ideal for this summer’s triathlon season, Cool Point from Trigger Point Performance Therapy could become a runner’s best friend.

Triathlons often demand peak performance, pace setting and dealing with fatigue, yet finding a balance between the three is a runner’s biggest challenge. Cool Point utilizes thermoregulation signals sent from the hand to the brain and keeps athletes feeling refreshed and performing at their best. Being durable and reusable, runners or cyclists now have the ability to control their performance and delay fatigue using Cool Point’s Stay Cool Technology. Just freeze the cooling gel and fit to your palm and see how Cool Point can take advantage of the hand being the body’s natural radiator.”

I actually used my Cool Point at the Tarpon Triathlon.  With the adjustable Velcro straps, I could fit it perfectly in the palm of my hand.

I’ve also used my Cool Point when I’ve missed my 5:00 a.m. run and found myself running a little later in the morning.  By 9:00 a.m., the Florida sun radiates some serious heat, but with the Cool Point, I combated the heat and avoided the fatigue brought on by summer sun.  Since the 90 degree temperatures are holding strong here in Florida, I’m still using my Cool Point into October.  It’s perfect for those short training runs.

Cool Point, the Original Hand Cooler is available at Trigger Point Performance Therapy for only $19.99.

As for my training runs, I ran 6 miles last Thursday and felt pretty good about my performance at Race for the Cure.  It looks like I may actually finish under an hour.

On Saturday, Chrissy and I ran 13.1 miles but that was a horrible run and nothing like last week’s 12 miles.  It was hot and humid and I just couldn’t shake how tired I felt.  Thank goodness, Faith came along to finish the last 5 miles with us.

On Sunday, my 7 year old woke up around 7:30 asking to ride her bike.  “Can we ride to Publix and get donuts for breakfast?”  Sure. Why not? I needed to do a recovery run anyway.  So, Emmalynn rode her bike 3.1 miles while I ran beside her.  Let’s just say she helped maintain an easy pace for me, but the run was truly a win-win (even though I passed on the donuts).  Emmalynn loved riding her bike with mom and I enjoyed my time alone with her.  Plus, I’m really enjoying the benefits of recovery runs.

Monday I rested, but there was no resting today because it’s Track Tuesday, and boy it was another hot and humid morning.  UGH!  Once the weather cools, I’d like to up my quarter mile sprints to 6 quarter sprints or half mile sprints, but until then, I’m still struggling with these.  It’s obvious that the humidity is dragging me down because I couldn’t finished under 1:54 until the last sprint.

In the last 1 mile lap, a toad or frog or something slimy hit my leg and it totally toad-ally freaked me out.  I thought it was the Frogalypse all over again.

Random Thoughts about Fall, Candy Corn, New Kicks and Track Tuesday

Last week, I broke down and bought some candy corn, because honestly, nothing says fall like striped triangle shapes full of corn syrup and Yellow 6.  But then, I ate so much of it that I got stomach pains.  See, these are the unfortunate happenings of a somewhat health-minded person when she falls off the healthy eating wagon and shovels down copious amounts of candy corn.  My body revolts with horrible pains.  So, now I must get these candy children-of-the-corn spawn OUT OF MY HOUSE especially before the start of Unprocessed Challenge next week.

Like a loving kiss from Gaia, it felt like fall on Monday, so the kids and I decorated the house for Halloween.  When the temperatures drop just a little, it actually feels like a new season and we have more to go on other than a date on the calendar telling us so.

The cooler weather makes me start to crave pumpkin.  I’m sure there is a scientific study somewhere that proves cooler weather creates a pumpkin craving and works the salivary glands into overdrive.  Starbucks and its pumpkin spice latte are not helping either.

Speaking of pumpkin and the Unprocessed Challenge…out of curiosity…Is canned pumpkin considered processed?  If I make anything during the Unprocessed Challenge, would I have to make it from a real pumpkin?  For the simple fact that I’m saying “real pumpkin” and “canned pumpkin” means I’ve probably answered my own question.  But what if I use organic canned pumpkin?  Is that acceptable?

According to the rules of the Unprocessed Challenge,

“Unprocessed food is any food that could be made by a person with reasonable skill in a home kitchen with readily available, whole-food ingredients.  It doesn’t mean that you have to be able to make the food — but that the food could be made in a home kitchen by someone who knows what they’re doing.  If it needs high-powered, industrial equipment, or could only be made in a laboratory, then it’s out.”

Man, canned pumpkin is out.  There’s one way to curb a pumpkin craving.

Last Saturday, my running partners and I did 12 miles and I was so impressed with our time. I even took photos to celebrate our achievement.

Although the end results were great, getting there had its challenges.  My t-bands and knees started bothering me around mile 10.  Then around mile 11, my left heel started to bother me.  Actually, I felt a sharp pain which stopped me dead in my tracks.  It felt like my plantar fasciitis acting up again which forced me to walk a little bit.  Once again, I cursed myself for putting off buying new shoes because it was obvious my heels had enough of those old dogs.  Nonetheless, I pushed through the 12 miles and I could still walk at the end.

On Sunday, I did my first ever recovery run.  My blogger friend, Jill, mentioned recovery runs over at her blog, Fitness, Health & Happiness.  Since I woke up Sunday with sore hamstrings and feeling just generally tight overall, I decided to give a recovery run a try.  A nice slow, easy run really did help loosen everything up and I felt great.

With only the last mile lap left to do, my left heel started acting up again.  No doubt about it, I need new shoes.  With all the issue I’ve had with my feet, plantar fasciitis, bunions and etc., I think I need to revaluate my shoe options.

So, this morning, I visited two different running stores to see what shoes they recommended. Both agree that I’ve moved into the ranks of a wider shoe.

Bill at The Running Center recommended Nike Zoom Structure and Asics GT 2170.  He suggested that I test them out a treadmill and bring back the one I didn’t want.  So, we’ll see how it goes tomorrow when I test out both shoes on my friend’s treadmill.  I plan to run a mile in each shoe on the treadmill and decide which shoe to keep. Stay tuned for a full follow-up report.

With this fabulous return policy, Bill gave me this fabulous hot pink Running Center tech shirt, which will coordinate quite nicely with my Race for the Cure attire.

Along with the shirt, Bill also gave me some great advice for my plantar fasciitis.  With the weather cooling down, he suggested I sit in my community pool after a long run.  The cold water would simulate an ice bath.  Good thinking!  Bill also suggested that I run in more than one pair of shoe.  He said it was good to change shoes.

After The Running Center, I stopped by Suncoast Running and Tracey fitted me in some other shoes.  She observed me running on the treadmill.  From the video playback, it was obvious that something is happening with my right foot, but “I really like the look of your left leg,” she said.

Don’t tell anyone.  They’ll all want a left leg like mine.

Tracey fitted me in the Brooks Trance 11 and Saucony Omni.   Although the new Brooks Trance has changed slightly, I still really like that shoe, however, I do need a wider fit.  So, Tracey ordered some shoes for me and I will give those a try when they come in, which I’m so excited to do.  With all these shoe trials, I feel like an investigative reporter!

Do you run in more than one pair of shoes?  Do use your shoes for different runs, like speedwork, short distances or long distances?

By the way, today is my husband’s birthday and I’m a horrible wife.  I forgot to buy him a card and I barely remembered to buy him beer and a cake.  Instead, I bought myself some running shoes because after all, that’s where my priorities are.

Random Thoughts about Skipping a Beat, 10 Burpees, Some Shoes and a Few 5Ks

I’ve spent the past two days recovering from Spring Break which has been mostly spent sweeping and tidying away the fallout from Easter and Spring Break.  It’s amazing how dirty and unkempt my house looks even though we spent so little time in it over the past week.

I’ve been so busy trying to play catch-up to my housework that I didn’t even blog yesterday for Music Monday.  Gasp!  I had a post in my head complete with photographs showing all our fun in the sun which I was going to link up at Kristi’s Leap into Spring! Photo Challenge at Live and Love Out Loud.  However, time just escaped me while one Little Lion Man wouldn’t leave me side, so I couldn’t swing it.  Maybe I’ll work on it for Wordless Wednesday, minus sunny day song.

We’re on day 10 for the 30 Day Burpee Challenge, which means we’ve moved hit double digits.  Truth be told, ten burpees about did me in today.  I am so out of shape, which why I need to do burpees.  It’s a vicious cycle.

Have I ever mentioned that I assist with my kids’ running club after school?  Every Tuesday, I run about 3 miles with my stroller and close to 50 kids.  Besides spending quality running time with my girls, it’s all part of my evening training plan to help me train for upcoming evening races in warmer weather.  And you thought I was trying to be a good mom!  Nope.  I’m just trying to be a better mother summer runner.

I officially registered for my first summer race: Oldsmar 5K (formerly the Oldsmar Taphouse Run) in June.  Even though it’s hotter than hell, this is one of my favorite races.  I love the flat course and its beautiful view of the bay.  It’s not chipped, but the first 50 finishers get “Das Boot” and since that will never be me holding Das Boot, I’m just going to have fun with it and get my drink on after the race.  I get to do my thing, taking photos running happy and snappy as usual and I’ll have a beer or two or three when it’s all finished.  Did I mention that there is free beer for all runners at the finish?

My new Brooks Trance 10 running shoes arrived last Thursday afternoon and I unfortunately didn’t have the chance to break them in before the race.  In other words, I wore brand-spanking new shoes for a race, which incidentally was 5K trail run.  I had no idea it was a trail run!  So not only was a panicking about not running for over a week due to plantar fasciitis, I began panicking because I hadn’t trained for a trail.  And on top of it all, I worried that I would dirty my pretty new white shoes.  Such a girl!  I’ll tell you more about the race in another post.

Speaking of shoes, our new pup chewed through my pink Spenco flip-flopsSon of…!  They were about a year old anyway and I was long overdue for a new pair as they had lost some of the support in them, but still.  UGH!  Thank goodness it wasn’t my new Abeo shoes but I’ve been hiding those out of the dog’s reach.  Oh well.  Now, I have an excuse to buy a new pair.  Maybe I’ll go for the pink (honeysuckle) cork shoes?

Before I forget, WordPress is hosting a Automattic Worldwide WP 5kThe WWWP5k is set for Sunday, April 29, but you can do your run/walk anytime from April 23rd-29th, which means you’ve got a week to fit it in.  If you’ve never done a 5K, the WWWP5K is the perfect no-pressure 5K, because like the Automattic gang put it so eloquently, “you can run, walk, or skip the 3.1 miles. It’s up to you. There’s no time limit and there’s just one requirement: that you participate! You can do it inside or outside, on a treadmill or on a track, or even do a swim or a bike ride instead of running/walking – just get moving!”

So, will you join the WWWP5K on April 29?  Of course, I’m down with WWWP5K. Yeah you know me. It should be a lot easier than 10 burpees.

Enjoying a Red Sunrise from The Walking Company

Upon a recent visit to The Walking Company I fell in love with the numerous styles and colors of comfortable shoes.  Sure, there were the traditional walking brands, like Clarks, Birkenstock and New Balance, but I was blown away by the variety of stylish sandals.  For once a girl can be cute and comfortable at the same time!

With the help of the sales assistance, I had my feet scanned for a proper fit and within seconds, a high tech analysis had measured me as a size 39, also known as an 8 US.

I tried on a few pairs and it was love at first step.  I even tweeted about them.

The prices of shoes at The Walking Company compare to your average running shoes, therefore, I experienced no sticker shock.  However, I needed new running shoes before fancy, fun sandals and I had to overrule any purchases based upon need vs. want.  Like a good consumer, I left the store empty handed, but with very sad feet.

A few hours later, I received an email from The Walking Company stating they would like to send me a pair of ABEO Biomechanical Footwear shoes.  I only needed to visit the site and make a selection.

You’re joking?  No need to tell me twice.  I was on it like a fashionista famished for new shoes.

When I visited the site, I discovered the most amazing thing. The Walking Company sells shoes specific to plantar faciistis.  I had died and gone to shoe heaven, because my feet would be walking on clouds this summer.

Much like my experience in the store, there were so many fun styles online.  After clicking through the site, I decided upon a fun color for summer: the ABEO Sunrise Red Reptile.

shoe

Now, I could share with you all the high-tech terminology and features of the shoes, but that’s all listed on the website.  You only need to know one thing: I love them.

My Red Reptile ABEO Sunrise shoes are so comfortable.  I don’t have any heel pain when I wear them.  I can walk in them for hours and never feel a twinge of pain from plantar fasciitis.  It’s like wearing running shoes, only much more stylish.  I can dress them up or down by coordinating the shoes with a sundress or shorts.  I can wear them to church, the mall, the park, the beach, an amusement park or restaurant.

Anything goes with a Sunrise (even a glass of red wine and purple toenail polish), but it’s the trendy comfort that makes this so fitting for my active mother runner lifestyle.

*I received these shoes as a gift from The Walking Company and I received no compensation for my review.  This review was offered in return for The Walking Company’s generosity.*

Random Thoughts about a Break or Two, Burpees and My New Shoes

My plantar faciitis began bothering me again which I believe to be a result of old shoes.  I’ve put a lot a miles on my shoes since November when I bought them.  Since my left heal has been giving me trouble, I haven’t ran since last Wednesday and I ordered myself some new lavender Trace 10 running shoes from Brooks.com.  They should arrive tomorrow, so hopefully I can get at least one 3 mile run in and break them in before my 5K on Saturday.

The Hare Racing Experience this Saturday is the only race I have one this month.   Although I never ran it before, I’ve heard great things about it so I’m excited about it.  This race will be even more fun since I’ll be joined by family members running/walking their first race.  We’re all participating in this race to benefit epilepsy in honor of my niece, Meghan.

I’ve had some amazing opportunities fall into my lap lately and I’m feeling so blessed for each of them.  I’m a grateful for every opportunity and the doors they have opened for me.  Thank you.

And speaking of opportunities, did you hear that I was featured on Another Runner Mother?  Go read my interview and leave some comment love.

On the subject of things I love…last week I received some new sandals from The Walking Company which my PF feet totally love. My ABEO sandals are so supportive that I don’t feel any heel pain at all.  I’m going to do a full review of the shoes, but here’s a sneak peek.  I really love them.

My girls are on spring break this week and we have lots of fun planned, however, my husband thought I was planning too much fun and the girls would need a break from their break.  So, today we’re having a quiet lie in and we’ll go to our community pool around lunch time.  I’m really looking forward to swimming since I haven’t run in almost a week and I have all this energy pent-up inside.  I’m going to have to tread water to expend some of it.
Speaking of expending energy, I’m almost finished with my push-up challenge.  I finished Week 6/Day 3/Level 1 yesterday, but I still have to complete another exhaustion test tomorrow.  I’m really nervous about it, which is so silly because it’s not like I could “fail” the test, but I’m afraid I won’t be anywhere near 100 push-ups.  At my last exhaustion test, I did only 50.  I’d like to be somewhere between 60-70 push-ups and beyond the half-way point, but we’ll see.

I’m excited about my next challenge for April! This month, we’re ”Springing into April with a 30 Day Burpee challenge“!  Yay.  *sound of crickets chirping*

Although I received a lot of resistance to this challenge at first, the response has been quite the opposite which is really motivating.  Follow #30burpees on Twitter if you need some motivation.  People hate burpees but their strong detest for burpees pushed them to be part of the challenge.  It’s pretty funny.

Basically, we started with one burpee on Day 1 and we’ll add one burpee each day after that, ending with 30 burpees on Day 30.  Simple, right?  hee hee  Find out more information here and join the linky party while you’re there.

Random Thoughts about Some Challenges, My Heeling Process and a Footnote

For the month of October, I committed to the Unprocessed Challenge and by doing so, I swore off processed foods.  Basically, participants had to refrain from eating foods they couldn’t reproduce, bake or cook themselves, such as foods that can only be produced in a factory.   Thankfully, store-bought beer and wine were acceptable.

Seriously?  In October?  What was I thinking?  I freaking love candy corn and other Halloween candy.  I think I ate even more of it because I knew I couldn’t on account of the challenge.  It was tough and I think I lasted (at most) two weeks.  And then I devoured some Tyson hot wings.

For November, I’m participating in the 30 Day Giving Challenge for the third year.  I love this challenge, but I’m not going to lie.  It’s hard, even when I plan out all my gifts for the month, because schedules change, kids gets sick and sometimes things just don’t always go according to plan.  I’ve done well though and I’ve given 15 gifts and then some in 15 days so far.

Speaking of gifts, my t-shirt giveaway didn’t attract as many people as other giveaways have in the past.  I tweeted, Facebooked, linked up at giveaway blog hops but still only 4 people entered the contest, including my SIL, Kirsten and my friend, Chrissy, who won as a result to all her entries.  Obviously, she had the best chance, which is what you hope for when hosting a giveaway.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in giveaway participants?

I had this whole 12 Days of Christmas giveaway plan in the works, but after this giveaway, I’m rethinking the idea.  It’s a lot of work and if it doesn’t generate a response, I’ll be disappointed.  Oh well.  But I’ve got other fun bloggie Christmas plans in the works, like a blogger ornament exchange and a virtual cookie recipe swap!  Stay tuned for more details!

This Sunday, as part of my giving challenge, I’m volunteering at the Women’s Half Marathon water stations with Suncoast Running.  I’m so excited to give back to a sport that has given me so much.  I’m looking forward to cheering and encouraging all the runners while handing them a cup of cold water with a smile.  It will mean the world to each participant, whether it’s their first half marathon or the fiftieth.

Do you remember that almost 21 miler I did a couple of weeks ago with little to no pain?  I even survived walking around Universal Studios the next day (minus a hamstring pull from 25 pound toddler squats all day).  Then, I didn’t run for two days to rest.  I ran about 3 miles on Tuesday and then on Wednesday, I ran almost 10 miles.  And that’s when it all went downhill.

I had some serious heel pain, like my heel was being stabbed with a knife.  I’ve never had this pain before, but I knew it wasn’t good.  I researched about heel pain and learned that I have heel spurs possibly as a result from increasing miles too quickly or running in old shoes (shoes without support). I’m inclined to believe it’s the latter because I’ve been pretty careful to not push myself too far too quickly.

As for healing my heel, everything I’ve read recommends taking a week off from running.  But, my marathon is in 12 days12 DAYS!  And I can’t run or even taper!

So now, I need new shoes.  But new shoes need to be broken in before I attempt to run 26.2 miles in them.  Plus, I don’t have any extra cash at the moment and I was really hoping Santa would bring me some new running shoes.  My friends over at Suncoast Running told me that they will have some great Black Friday specials. But I’m still nervous about running a marathon in new shoes.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a week since I last ran and it still hurts to walk or put any pressure on my right heel.  I tried some light hiking when we went camping over the holiday weekend and the pain would gradually increase.  I’ve read that I can do alternate work-outs like cycling or very low impact aerobics, but I don’t think my heel could handle any impact.  Plus, I’m still scared to get back on my bike.  So resting and yoga is the plan for a few more days until I get some new shoes.  It seems my running plans have become a footnote and I’m not liking it all.

Oh and there’s this other nagging other issue I keep forgetting to do.  I haven’t booked a hotel room for the race yet.  I know. I know.  What am I waiting for?  I was waiting until I registered, which was delayed until I knew I could come close to a marathon distance again post-baby number 3.  Well, I’m officially registered (as of October 22) for the Space Coast Marathon and now I can’t find an available room.  But it doesn’t matter really because it appears that I will have to buy shoes instead of a securing a hotel room.  Looks like I’ll be sleeping in my car the night before the marathon. Yay.

As you can see, lots of challenges lie ahead this month.
