Last week, I shared 31 Affordable Halloween Family Activities to countdown the days until Halloween and celebrate the season. As part of that list, my kids and I added “Watch a Halloween Movie”. A somewhat simple, easy way to celebrate Halloween for our Friday family movie night ritual that prompted a lengthy family discussion as to which movie would be the one to watch.
“It has to be The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” suggested my middle child, Emmalynn.
“No, I say Hocus Pocus,” chimed in my oldest daughter, Allana.
“Oh that’s a good one!” I replied with enthusiasm over their suggestions. “Of course, Ghostbusters is a good one too.”
“Human sacrifice! Dog and cats living together! Mass hysteria!” We all chanted. I love that my kids love the classics too. I wouldn’t be doing my job as a parent or the gatekeeper if my children didn’t know a proton pack, Slimer or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
“Yeah, Ghostbusters is awesome, but nothing too scary or freaky like ParaNormran or Frankenweenie,” requested my timid young-at-heart middle child, Emmalynn. “Those movie are creepy and sad!”
“We should search for the best family friendly Halloween movies,” suggested by Internet savvy oldest child.
“Search?!” I replied with an insulted tone. “Why should we ask Google?! I could totally name the best ones. Heck, we just named three! We so got this.”
With that, my daughters and I compiled a list of our 13 favorite, non-freaky, not-so-scary or creepy family-friendly Halloween movies (in no particular order and links to amazon instant video).
1. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
2. Hocus Pocus
3. Ghostbusters
4. The Addams Family
5. Monster House
6. The Witches
7. Corpse Bride
8. Beetlejuice
9. Hotel Transylvania
10. Halloweentown
11. The Nightmare Before Christmas
12.The Adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mister Toad (Disney’s Legend of Sleepy Hallow)
13. Scooby Doo: The Movie
Allana really wanted Edward Scissorhands to make the list; therefore, we’re giving it an “Honorable Mention.” And, if your lurking for something to nosh on during your Halloween movie, check out my Pintersest Halloween Food and Fun Board for some spellbinding snacks like a Jack o’-lantern quesadilla, a mummy wrapped hot dog or a mini-mummy pizzas.
You forgot Casper! I love that movie 😀
Nope, we didn’t. We deliberately omitted Casper. My kids find the film way too sad.
Great list! This will save us from the horrible movie experience we had tonight. Can’t wait to check these out. Some of them will be new for me.
