Plan B for Spring Break

Since the campsites at Anastasia State Park for spring break book so quickly, I reserved our campsite for back in August.   Typically, when booking that far in advance, there’s no way to predict the weather but we could never have predicted that pollen levels would have forced us to cancel our highly coveted camping spot.

Of course, we were all greatly disappointed as we had been anticipating the trip for months, but the girls took the news the worst.  Even though Allana’s eyes swelled shut and her snot ran green due to the amount of pollen in the air, she still was willing to suffer through it for the sake of some s’ mores . However, Allan and I simply could not allow anyone to endure the elements that would trigger an asthma attack or a severe allergic reaction.  So, to make it up to the girls, we promised four fun-filled days.

Thursday, we spent the day at Busch Gardens.  It had been years since we last visited the park.  Allan and I couldn’t believe how much had changed, but it was all new to the girls and they loved every inch of it.

Friday, we visited Dinosaur World.  The girls and I had been several time before, but this was Allan’s first time and he really enjoyed this outdoor dinosaur museum.  The weather was perfect but being outside under the shady cypress and oak trees was all anyone’s allergies could handle.

Saturday, we took a road trip to St. Augustine.  The girls loved climbing the Castillo de San Marco and exploring the oldest city in the U.S.  They especially liked stopping for a refreshing root beer at the A1A Aleworks and for homemade ice cream and fudge at Kilwin’s.  Before we left to head back home, we stumbled upon a beautiful wooden park and I think the girls may have enjoyed it more than the fort.

On Sunday, Grandma treated the girls to How to Train Your Dragon in 3D while Allan and I rested to recover from our exhausting excursions.

Happy Birthday, Miss Sharon!

At the beginning of the year, I vowed to treat Emmalynn’s preschool teacher to a weekly bottle of wine.  Although I failed to deliver on my weekly bribe promise, Miss Sharon’s birthday seemed like a perfect opportunity to offer a small token of my appreciation.

Since Miss Sharon has teased me about Emmalynn already exhibiting middle child behaviors, I couldn’t resist giving her a bottle of Middle Sister Wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon appropriately labeled “Mischief Maker”.  I even added my own embellishments to the label.

Emmalynn offered her contribution to the gift by making a card and then, Allana joined in the fun by creating one too. After all, Miss Sharon was Allana’s preschool teacher as well and she still adores her. Honestly, we all adore her.

Marley is My Musical Therapy

As the temperatures rise and the summer heat quickly approaches, I find myself longing for beach days.  For me days at the beach are therapeutic.  I love listening to the waves roll along the shore while the sun’s warm rays soothe me like a Snuggie comfy blanket.  As I lie on the beach sucking down a Corona Lite with lime or a margarita soaking in every moment, Bob Marley plays on my iPod and he welcomes me home.

Bob Marley and the Wailers Legend is my musical therapy.  His music always lifts my spirits and casts me away to a tropical paradise.  In fact, if I had to choose only one Desert Island Disc, Legend would be my pick.  Despite the irony of already being trapped on a tropical shore, his music would ease my mind and soul.

Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing,
‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right!”

Ev’rything’s gonna be alright.

Earth Day Lesson: Be Good to Bugs

For the seventh year, I hosted our annual Earth Day play date for our mommy group friends.  As in past years, our Earth Day tradition included making dirt cups.

To keep it simple, we used small pudding pots, Oreos and gummy worms.  After the food craft, we used our spoons as shovels and filled our pots with real dirt and wildflower seeds.

This year, Emmalynn brought along her bug catcher to the play date, which seemed like a good idea as there were all these furry caterpillars crawling about the park.  When we went on our nature walk, she created a small caterpillar community inside her bug jar.  Emmalynn was so proud of all the “pets” that she collected and she couldn’t wait to take them home to feed them and watch them grow into butterflies.

She collected more caterpillars at the tower and the pier, but I was too busy noticing the effects of this winter’s rainy season which had gradually grown a lake once again at our favorite park and I began reminiscing of walks along the pier when the water sat at the shore nearly submerging the dock.

At the end of the day, we pack up our pots of sowed seeds and Emmalynn’s pets.  Unfortunately, on the way home, she opened her bug jar and some escaped.  Thankfully, we hadn’t left the park so I calmly pulled the car over to save a dozen creepy, furry caterpillars crawling around in my mini-van surprisingly without skeeving or hurling.

But, I missed one. One creepy, pissed off grouchy caterpillar slinked across Emmalynn’s car seat.  Emmalynn assured me that it was o.k. because she could simply let it crawl around on her arm until we got home.

However, once we were on the highway, it “stung” and she started screaming.  Frantically, I pulled over and flicked the little furry bastard pet pest off of her into the grassy shoulder along the highway.

Since Emmalynn is highly allergic to bees and wasps, I wasn’t sure how her little system would handle a caterpillar “sting”.  Having grown up in Florida, I know that there are certain breeds of caterpillars that are poisonous and hoped that these vile creatures were not one of them.  I nervously watched the red bump for signs of swelling and anaphylactic shock.  At the first sign of a reaction, I was prepared to administer her EpiPen.  As we waited Emmalynn said in her saddest voice, “We can let that one go, Mommy.  He’s mean and not as nice as the other caterpillars.”

After a few minutes, the swelling went down and there was no need to administer the Epi.  When we continued our journey home, I explained to Emmalynn how some small animals and bugs use stings and sprays, such as a porcupine, a skunk or an octopus, to protect themselves from larger animals that want to eat them.

“But, I didn’t want to eat him, Mommy.”

Once we returned back home, I searched the Internet for Emmalynn’s pests pets, which are called White Tussock Moths.  Moths.  Oh for the love of Mother Nature.  They’re moths.  Gross.  And they have urticating hairs (barbed hairs like tarantulas - double gross) which can cause an irritation and a reaction on the skin.   Really?!  No kidding.

During my caterpillar research, I also learned that White Tussock Moths feed on oak leaves (not sugar water like butterflies).  I used this newly acquired knowledge to persuade Emmalynn to release her pests pets back into the world.  She could watch them feed on the oak trees in our yard.  Yay.  Hooray for ugly moths swarming our garage lights like…well like a moth to a flame.

Besides a lesson in conservation this Earth Day, Emmalynn learned a valuable lesson in insect defense mechanisms.  Although Miss Spider has been saying it for years, Emmalynn understands firsthand why we need to be good to bugs.

Growing Green Girls

When my kitchen counter became too cluttered with recyclables, I cleverly devised a plan to encourage my children to help me clean up.

Like many northern states, New York’s Returnable Container Act charges consumers five cents for bottled beverages.  Although Florida doesn’t currently charge its consumers for bottles, I thought I could institute a five cent deposit policy in our home by paying my girls five cents for every recyclable container they tossed into our recycling bin.

However, before implementing our recycling program, the girls needed a quick lesson in how to determine which items to recycle.   I began by showing them the #1 and #2 triangle   recycle symbols on the bottom of the plastic containers. Other number plastics were tossed into the trash or we found find other ways to reuse them, but all glass containers and aluminum cans could be recycled with the #1 and #2 plastics.

Each time they tossed an item in the recycling bin, the girls would mark a tally on our recycling chart.  Each tally would represent five cents and therefore, five tallies would equal a quarter.

When my eight year old would have four sets of five tally marks, I would pay her a dollar, an idea she suggested.  My four year old loved the idea of getting a big shiny quarter for a set of five tally marks.  In turn, I would be teaching my oldest to skip count by twenty-five and my youngest would be learning to skip count by fives.  Plus, for all their efforts, the girls would receive a small lesson in earning and saving money.

I implemented this task and teaching tool about six months ago and our recycling program is still going strong.

In fact, we recently finished one side and had to start a new chart on the back.  After all, I had to demonstrate another type of recycling.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle with Target

In Sunday’s ad, Target offered a mail-in form for a FREE reusable shopping bag in exchange for five plastic Target bags.

And did you know that when you bring your reusable shopping bags to Target, you can receive five cents off your purchase for each reusable bag?  Talk about saving some green for being green!

But if I mail in my Target bags, what will I use for my trashcan liners?

And my shower caps?

An Honest Toot

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve received two amazing recognitions which I feel entitles me to toot my own horn.

First, Run DMT was featured as one of the Best Running Blogs in the Blogosphere by Broken Hearted Runner (@Jake Rosen).  With big ol’  preggo belly popping daily, my running or the more accurate term wogging (walking + jogging)  days are few and far between.  Unfortunately, that leaves little to write about it.  But yes, I am in deed still attempting to wog even though it’s getting harder and harder every day.  It’s just nice to know that others still appreciate the content here at Run DMT whether I’m blogging about my wogging or my family life.

Secondly, Alex of Ma, What’s 4 Dinner slapped me with the Honest Scrap Award.  Boy, if only she knew how appropriate this title is for me!  I am way too honest and scrappy for my own good and sometimes the honesty borders on the side of TMI.  But if this award refers to scrapbooking, then Lord help us because the only sort of embellishment I know is exaggerating which is a rare occurrence for an honest mama like me.

I stumbled upon Alex through SITS Saturday Sharefest which epitomizes the idea of blogging support.  Thanks to this comment fest every Saturday hosted by Secret in the Sauce (SITS) , Alex and I began regularly visiting each other’s blogs.  I just love her simple, tasty recipes for busy moms.

Now, according to the “rules” of this award, I must list ten honest things about myself.  Hmmmm….This could be a little tricky since I already listed 100 things about myself.  But here it goes nothing ten totally new things about me!

1.  In case you didn’t know, I’m pregnant with Run DMT Baby #3 and it’s a boy, our first boy.  We have a first named picked, but we’re still working on his middle name.  All will be revealed when little Run DMT #3 arrives this July.

2.  I have been craving sushi for months but I won’t chance eating any, not even a Mexican roll which isn’t even real sushi.

3.  I worry every day about all the weight I have gained this pregnancy (26 lbs so far) even though I know when I start really running hard again, it will all melt away again and hopefully not take two years to come off like it did with babies #1 and #2.

4.  I am not a crier, but my hormones have been RIDICULOUS throughout this pregnancy.  I cried when I accidentally shrunk my favorite maternity shorts last week.  (See #3 to understand my pain.)

5.  I turn the big 4-0 next year and I’m planning a couple’s trip to New Orleans to commemorate the milestone.

6.  I have been watching Parenthood and love it.  I find all the characters so endearing.  Every week, I laugh and cry which could be a result of #4.  I secretly wish they existed in real life so I could hang out with them and have a beer with them.

7.  I am a reformed pack rat.  The FlyLady saved my life.  Over the past few years, I have discovered decluttering to be so liberating.

8.  For my next marathon, I am considering running in the Space Coast Marathon in November 2011.

9.  I often make pop culture references and quote lines from TV shows and movies even though others may not get the reference.  I think I’m pretty dang funny.

10.  I honestly and truly love my life and every person who plays a role in it (my husband, my children, my extended family, my friends, etc.).  I feel so blessed.

And now I must pass this award along to ten others.

1.  Following in My Own Shoes

2.  N*aked on the Roof

3.  My Chaos, My Bliss

4.  Mommy Drinks Because You Cry

5.  Luke, I am Your Father

6.  Live and Love…Out Loud

7.  Really, Are You Serious?

8.  Buckeroo Mama

9.  Little Writer Momma

10.  Momisodes

Every Day is Earth Day

Earth Day is a big deal in our house.

Every year, I plan an Earth Day play date for my mommy group complete with goodies, games, stories, music, nature walk and crafts made with recycled materials.

Even though I use fun and games to teach a simple lesson in conversation on Earth Day, I believe our children understand the importance of reducing their carbon footprint on the planet every day.  Whether it’s large signs at the supermarket reminding us to bring our own reusable grocery bags or recycle receptacles at the park, these days it’s easy to be green.  I love that protecting the planet is trendy and as a result, the behavior has become second nature for our children.

BlogTrotting through Tampa Bay

Greetings from Land O’Lakes, FL!

This week, BlogTrotting requested me to share my small slice of the Sunshine State.  Although I live in Land O’Lakes, my little suburb is only 15 minutes north of Tampa, which is the home of the Buccaneers (Super Bowl XXXVII Champions 2002),

the Rays (American League Champions 2008 ),

the Lightning (Stanley Cup Champions 2004) and the spring training home of the Yankees.

Not to mention, Tampa is also the home of two great universities: University of South Florida (my alma mater – GO BULLS!)

and University of Tampa (my DH’s alma mater).

According to Dr. Beach, the Tampa Bay has some of the best beaches, including Fort Desoto, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island.

Although Tampa may lack the metropolitan and ethnic flare typically found in larger cosmopolitan cities, our beautiful city still offers its own flavor of culture.

Ybor City, a section of Tampa settled by Cuban immigrants in the late 1800s, produced more cigars than Havana and became known as the Cigar Capital of the World.  Today, Ybor City is our own little Spanish New Orleans and serves up some of the best Cuban food outside of Miami.  In late October, Ybor City celebrates Guavaween, which can be compared a Halloween Mardi Gras.  Fifteen years ago, I met my husband one cold drunken Guavaween night.

Tampa residents love to spin pirate tales about a mythological pirate, José Gaspar, who invaded our streets during the late 1800s.  From late January to early March, we celebrate Gasparilla with a variety of pirate parades, festivals and races.

As for tourist spots, I highly recommend the Florida Aquarium, which offers a gorgeous glimpse of our wetlands and coral reef and a fun splash area for the kids.

Busch Gardens is another favorite tourist hot spot.  The roller-coasters and up-close animal exhibits are simply breathtaking in more ways than one.

Lowry Park Zoo is another great place to visit when the natives are restless.

If you visit Tampa in the winter months, you will want to stop by the Teco Manatee Viewing Center.  During the cooler months, manatees seek refuge in the warm waters discharged from the power plant.  On a good, cool day, you can view close to a hundred manatees free of charge.

If you crave outdoor adventures, Tampa Bay has beautiful waterways for boating, fabulous flatwood trails to hike, bike or run…

…and several rivers to canoe such as Hillsborough River, Weedon Island or Weeki Wachee Springs, which is the home of our world famous mermaids.  Rumor has it even Elvis stopped there.

If hiking trails and primitive camping is your pleasure, Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park was featured last spring in the St. Pete Times as one of the best camping spots in Florida, but I prefer the “luxury amenities” at Hillsborough River State Park.

I love living in Tampa Bay and can’t imagine living anywhere else.  I enjoy spending almost every day outdoors and wearing flip flops all year round.  I’ve even got the tan lines to prove it.
