It Keeps Getting Better Because I Got Sole

This is the year.

I can feel it.

This will be the year that I shave 10 20 minutes off my half marathon time to finish under two hours again.

I see a lot of speed training, hill training, intervals and strength training in my future.

And it started yesterday starts today.

Step back.  Gonna come at you fast.

Hold on.

It keeps getting better.

The online application for the NYC Marathon opens at noon today.  I’m keeping my fingers, toes and laces crossed again until April when the lottery selection starts.  I believe 2012 is my year to run it.

I can feel it.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

I got soul sole, but I’m not a soldier.

A Christmas Calm (with a little Pink Martini)

On Christmas Eve, a calm feeling came over me.  Although I still had the entire house to clean for company while Allan prepared a huge Italian feat for my family, I felt like it was no big deal.

Since Halloween, life has been pretty chaotic from birthday celebrations, school projects, races and then the holidays came.  For months, I’ve felt like I was drowning.  But for the first time in months, I felt like I could finally catch my breath and I enjoyed the moment with a few more cleansing breaths while I cleaned.

I suppose I felt calm because this was it.  The last big thing I had been stressing over was now coming to a close.  The presents had been bought and wrapped.  Most of my Christmas cards had been mailed.  All that was left was to enjoy Christmas and I was truly enjoying it, ironically while I scrubbed toilets.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were perfect.  The kids were so excited about all of their presents.  The food was fantastic and we shared lots of laughs and good cheer with our families.  And it felt so good not to worry about anything (school projects, races, blogging) for a little while.

With today being Boxing Day, we’ll spend a quiet day at home cleaning out closets and cupboards to find space for all our lovely new things we received from Christmas and then we’ll donate all our old gently used toys and clothes to charity in the spirit of Boxing Day.  Today could be another calming, therapeutic cleansing day for me in many ways.  At least that’s what I’m hoping it to be.

Although I’m enjoying my Christmas calming and cleansing moments, it leaves room for some new goals and plans for the New Year.  But that’s another post.

What are your plans and goals for the New Year?

Next week for Music Monday, I would love for you to share a song that captures your plans for the New Year. Will 2012 be more of the same or are you taking on new endeavors? Tell us your thoughts with a tune.

Holiday Inn Captured My Heart

I took my best girl to the cinema yesterday.  Just me and my gal catching a show and we had a swell time, see.  A real swank time, I tell you.

It’s hard to shake the circa 1940s slang after being immersed in it for a couple hours.  As an early Christmas present, I bought tickets for Holiday Inn for my sister since it’s her favorite Christmas movie.  She was surprised to learn that I had never seen it so she asked me to join her rather than her hubby.

With its old world charm, the Tampa Theatre is the perfect cinema for a showing of a classic film and I loved watching the movie for the first time on the big screen as it was intended.  The larger than life dance numbers and set designs help your appreciate the art of film-making in a time before CGI and green screens.

Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby’s characters were delightful and endearing, like the way you want to remember these classic Hollywood film stars.  Although as beloved as they are, it’s the songs and the dancing that truly steal the show, of course.

The song, White Christmas, makes its debut in Holiday Inn, however, most people know it as the theme song for White Christmas, which will also be showing this holiday season at the Tampa Theatre on December 23.

Much like my sister, Holiday Inn captured my heart with singing and dancing.  I enjoyed watching this classic Christmas movie on the big screen so much that I plan to make this a new holiday tradition for us.

That’d be swell, I tell ya.  A real hot dog!

A Very She & Him Christmas

I read somewhere that Zooey Deschanel’s voice helped land her role in Elf.  Since first watching that movie, my husband has had a crash on Zooey Deschanel all in part to her voice.  Normally, Allan doesn’t have a thing for blondes, but he could see past this siren’s golden locks in part to her soulful, sleepy bedroom voice.

Once he learned she was a brunette, Zooey Deschanel had a permanent spot on Allan’s laminated list somewhere between Marisa Tomei and Amy Adams.

Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of Zooey Deschanel’s voice.  I’d prefer to watch her in (500) Days of Summer or as the adorkable Jess in her new hit comedy, New Girl rather than listen to her sing.  However, I had a change of heart when I heard She & Him’s In the Sun, but more recently when I heard their new Christmas album, A Very She & Him Christmas.

More than another Christmas album filled with favorites, She & Him honors these songs with pure and simple renditions, perfect for cool nights drinking hot cocoa in front of a fire while gazing at the tree.  In a world of autotune and over produced music, each song sends you back to an era of a simpler time when families sat around a radio for enjoyment.

My favorite song on the album is The Christmas Waltz.  Zooey’s style and tone reflects the true heart and feel of the song.  Watch She & Him’s live performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

I’ve downloaded the songs from amazon and on the sly, I’ll add a few songs to Allan’s player as a surprise for our anniversary in a few weeks.  Christmas songs by She & Him will make a sweet, romantic gift, especially since Zooey’s voice is like sugar straight from the candy cane.  (Watch out, Jewel!)

Pssst!  Speaking of gifts….Don’t miss this one!

In My Life

For the past year, I’ve worked extremely hard on repairing some broken relationships.  It took a lot of patience, trust, honesty and understanding to rebuild those relationships, but it was so worth it.  Now, my life is full of laughter rather than pain.

Or so I thought.  As I expended my energy into one relationship, other relationships unraveled because I hadn’t been as plugged into some big events as I should have been.  My lack of presence and support was perceived as a lack of empathy.

When I heard I let my sister and friends down for various reasons, it stopped me dead in my tracks.  Somehow between running around after my family and running in races, I had missed some important events and it’s not like me to not be there for loved ones.  However in these incidences, I wasn’t and I hurt them terribly.  When I heard I let them down, I cried for weeks.

Even now, the pain I know I caused brings tears to my eyes. I live a rich life because of my family and friends. Their relationships are bountiful blessings. Without them, my life would be empty and lonely.

Somehow I have to find balance between my own family, my extended family on both sides and my friends. That’s why I am so grateful for the 30 Day Challenge, because it forces me to stop and remember everything and everyone that is important in my life, whether it’s spending time with them or sending them a note to say, “I love you. I appreciate you in my life.”

Of course with schedules, it’s hard to coordinate time to spend together, but we’ll make it happen.  And for that, I’m thankful.

For the next four Music Mondays, I’ll be counting my blessings through song.  Each week in November, I will be singing my praises and giving thanks by sharing a song that symbolizes one of the many blessings in my life.  Come count your blessings with me and link up while you’re here.  What a blessing that would be!

Sweet Child{ren} of Mine

I am blessed with three beautiful, brilliant children, who constantly make my smile.

I love the little people they are growing up to be, but the true blessing is that I get to watch it happening before my eyes.

Every day, they amaze me.

And every day, they give me another reason to celebrate whether it’s making honor roll…

or a little man who picks up after himself.

I am so thankful for the laughter and joy they bring, the tears I get to kiss away and the cuddles that my children continuously give me.

I am so truly thankful for each one of them in my life.

Last week, I let my blogging buddies down when I didn’t share an 80s tune, per my request to Xmas Dolly. Although I missed the memo, everyone else played along with 80s tunes for Music Monday.  To redeem myself of my epic blogging fail, I shared an 80s tune today while giving thanks.  All better!  We’re good now, right?

For the next four Music Mondays, I’ll be counting my blessings through song.  Each week in November, I will be singing my praises and giving thanks by sharing a song that symbolizes one of the many blessings in my life.  Come count your blessings with me and link up while you’re here.  What a blessing that would be!

Calling All The Monsters! It’s Almost Halloween! Get Ur Freak On!

China Anne McClain of Disney’s A.N.T. Farm released a treat just in time for Halloween and my girls love it.  The choreography reminds me of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Halloween is only two weeks away!  I CAN’T WAIT!

My Glee Cheerio cheerleader costume arrived and it fits perfectly and no muffin top was visible.  Thank goodness! Allana will approve.  However, other parts may be visible, so I’ll need to wear a pair of running shorts underneath my skirt.

I have to admit, I will look so cute running in the Frakenfooter half marathon as a Cheerio cheerleader.  I think I’ll also wear it trick-or-treating with the kids this year.  Fun!

My friend, Chrissy is hosting the adult Halloween party this weekend, which should be a devilishly good time as always.  I am so ready to get my drink freak on!

I haven’t officially unveiled our couple costume for the adult party on the blog yet, but I am dying to spill the beans.  It’s a good one.  All will be revealed for next week’s Music Monday when I post pictures from the adult party.

For the next two Music Mondays, I will be sharing my favorite Halloween jamz.  I would love to hear what Halloween songs move your spirit.  Link up and play along…if you dare.  Muhahahahahahaha!

This Woman’s Work

Normally, once October rolls around, I start sharing my favorite Halloween tunes for Music Monday, but today I decided to start on a different note.

Runners have an unbelievable strength.

Now imagine the power and strength a runner fighting breast cancer would possess.

On Saturday, my running group and I participated in Race for the Cure in honor of two Suncoast Striders and thousands of other women who are battling breast cancer.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.  In the United States, 207,000 women are expected to be diagnosed this year.  (Statistics borrowed from National Cancer Institute.)

The best prevention to combat breast cancer is early detection through self examinationsI am the cure.

If there is history of breast cancer in your family, speak to your doctor about scheduling a mammogram.  Women after age 40 should have screenings once a year.  However,  if you have recently lost your job and subsequently your health insurance, you may qualify for a free mammogram and screening.  Check your local Susan G. Komen affiliate to find a center near you.

In October, “think pink” is more than a catchy phrase and pretty marketing campaign.  It saves lives.  Together we are the cure.

Getting the message out there is this woman’s work.

Thanks for stopping by and linking up to share what music moves you.

On a lighter note, swing by Gone Bananas and watch our tribute to the 80s.

Last Friday Night

I spent last weekend in Anna Maria Island with some pretty wild women great friends and like the past three years,  it’s been a fuzzy, fun-filled four days.   I’m sure photos will end up on Facebook soon enough to help me remember and explain how I got all these bruises.  “It’s a black out blur.  But I’m pretty sure it ruled.  Damn.”

*Image borrowed from Kelly Noel Photography.*

“Last Friday night
Yeah we danced on tabletops
And we took too many shots
Think we kissed but I forgot
Last Friday night”

Only 365 days until we do it all again.
