Fall in Florida

We’re into the second week of November and autumn has finally arrived in Tampa Bay.  A Florida fall consists of much cooler weather with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the lower 50s.

And if you’re very observant, you’ll start to see some leaves turn colors.

It always makes me sad when the cypress trees in my neighborhood turn shades of brown.

Once the cypress trees begin to go brown, they lose their leaves quickly and their drab gray branches make the trees appear dead.

I wouldn’t mind barren trees if they were covered in white snow.  Well, I would mind the snow, but at least the cypress trees wouldn’t look so lifeless.

I miss the green already.  Is it too early to put up my Christmas tree?

The Gallery: Orange

PhotographyLiving in Florida, we rarely experience seasons which can make fall feel anything but autumn, especially when your Facebook friends and blogging buddies share lovely photos of leaves turning colors.  We do our best in these parts to experience fall, but takes a whole lot of pumpkin lattes to feel it.

To get the fall ball rolling, we decorate our house for Halloween after September 11.  With light up pumpkins and orange string bulbs, our house will begin to have an orange glow about it.  But it’s the fuzzy pumpkin throw pillows on the couch that steal the orange spotlight and make my children grin like jack-o-lanterns.

While thrift shopping for Halloween costumes last week, we stumbled upon a pumpkin pillow similar to ours.  For $2.07, my oldest daughter insisted I splurge on the pillow, because Jack looked like he needed some pumpkin friends.  Being the sucker for a bargain, we brought Jack home.  A quick toss into the dryer to kill the dust mites and Jack was as good as new.

Once he found a patch for himself on the couch, I do believe his grin grew a bit wider.

Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge: Sweet Summer Finale

By the third day of school Allana was tired of matching her sister.  “Why does Emmalynn have to match me?  I don’t want anyone to match me.”

“Well,” I began to explain, “in a school of 500 students all wearing uniforms, you’re bound to match someone.”

Thankfully, with a little help from Lands End, my girls selected different school bags, which I think show off each girl’s unique style and taste beautifully.

At least, that’s one way Allana won’t match anyone.

Because my Allana likes to be unique.

Good Times at the Glazer Children’s Museum

On the first Tuesday of each month, the Glazer Children Museum offers $2 Tuesdays sponsored by Target from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Where visiting the museum could be considered a luxury spending for some, this generous community outreach program helps make a fun afternoon affordable for families experiencing financial hardships.

By the length of the queue to enter the museum on $2 Tuesdays, it is apparent that many families certainly appreciate the reduced admission for the Glazer Children’s Museum.  I highly recommend arriving early to avoid a long wait.

For this month’s visit, my SIL, our children and I played in the fountains at Curtis Hixon Park to pass the time while waiting in line.  One adult stayed with the children while the other held our spot in line.  It was a very clever and refreshing plan!

Once inside, guests can experience all the hands-on exhibits just as any other day at the museum and more.

My children love the water play of Kids Port and Gasparilla Island with its sandy-colored rubber crumbles instead of your typical beach sand.  It pours and piles just like regular sand as the children discovered and attempted to bury me alive.

Shopping is a pleasure at the Publix Super Market, but especially for my little one as he pushed his shopping cart around like a Lightning McQueen circling the track.

And the tunnel in the tot spot was almost as much fun.

My family and I love the Gazer Children’s Museum so much that we plan to visit more often than the first Tuesday of each month.  Therefore, as a belated birthday present to my children, I purchased a family membership.  Now with our annual family membership, we can enjoy the museum more regularly and other children’s museums in their reciprocal program.

And that’s a great thing, because the museum is as much fun as it is tasty.

Excuse me, I believe you have my sparkler.

Although I tried my hardest to snap some high-tech firework photos with my fancy SLR camera, I just couldn’t get the settings right to capture the fireworks on the Fourth of July.  The show was over by the time I figured it out.  Oh well.  At least I captured some awesome sparkler shots.

A Fizzed Firework and a Party in the USA

Last night, my neighbors were having a dress rehearsal with their fireworks to prepare for tonight, which gave me an opportunity to test out the settings on my SLR camera.  As you can see, I didn’t quite figure it out.

So, if you have any tips, I would love to hear them.  Nighttime setting with flash? Sport setting? Flash off? Lower the shutter speed?  Which F-Stop?  *sigh* Lots to learn!  Hopefully I’ll snap some better photos tonight.

Speaking of duds, this morning I was a slacker.  I overslept and I missed the Lutz Independence Run.  This little firecracker totally fizzed.  So, I missed the race but there’s always next year to let my red, white and blue colors burst.

There have been some really longs days around here with and I guess my body needed the sleep.  Or maybe these little runner legs needed some better training for the marathon shopping my sisters-in-law made me endure.  No need to worry about me, though. I’m well-rested now and ready to party!

I hope your day is bursting with fun and your camera is set at the right F-stop!

Happy Fourth of July!

This Little Light of Mine

When I learned this week’s Crazy Days of Summer theme was “light”, I knew exactly what photo to capture since Liam is obsessed with the red light that hangs over our kitchen table. He’ll point his little index finger at the light, stretch out his chubby cherub arm and squeal until you hold him close enough to touch the glowing lamp. With his index finger and high-pitched squeals, it’s as though E.T. and R2-D2 had a love child.

In the midst of this enlightening theme, we took a mini family vacation to Sanibel and I hoped to snap some great sunset photos for this week’s challenge.

I don’t know which glowed brighter: the sky or my girls’ beautiful faces.

More snapshots from Sanibel coming soon!

Mustache Madness

When Tara over at Sticky Fingers announced last week’s Gallery theme, I had the perfect plan.

I asked my fabulous photographer friend, Kelly, if I could borrow her mustache prop. She happily obliged, however, Liam didn’t. My little mustache model would not cooperate and preferred eating the prop.  I need to leave the photography props to the professionals.

It appeared that I would miss another fun Gallery theme.

But sometimes things work-out best when you don’t try so hard to make them happen, as a kid’s bath time would demonstrate.  A regular bath time routine provided some spontaneous and beautifully brilliant bubble beards and mustaches.

But then I was too late with my mustache masterpiece.  The Gallery’s Mustache theme linky closed.  Oh well.  Better luck next time with My Backyard.

Easter Sunday in My City

Our church looked amazing Easter Sunday!

I used the landscape setting on my Droid in an attempt to capture the whole stage and altar.

But I forgot to change the setting back to portrait when I asked a fellow churchgoer to take this photo of my girls and me.

And it was still set to landscape when I took this photo of the sunset, which actually worked out quite well.
