Soup du Jour Vlog: What Makes Someone a Good Candidate to Volunteer at BlogHer ’13?

soupdujour_blogbuttonRecently, I applied to be a volunteer at BlogHer ’13, but I was not selected.  With my seven years an elementary school teacher and in my life as a SAHM for the past twelve years, I have contributed and volunteered in numerous of community events, organized several interest groups and hosted many meetups and workshops.  A few years back, I even hosted a Tampa BlogHer meetup.

Therefore, in this week’s Soup du Jour vlog post, I ask “What is the criteria for someone to be a volunteer at BlogHer? What am I missing? What areas could be improved to ensure I am selected to volunteer for future BlogHer events?”

I look forward to your constructive criticism.  I apologize in advance for all the “Ums” and “And thens”.

Are you experiencing any reflections and self-evaluations at the moment?

Hi, Denise. You absolutely have an amazing background and we would be lucky to have you volunteering, unfortunately there are far more applicants than available slots. Part of the decision is ability, part of it is need-based, and part of it is acquired skills (ask me why I could never be a live-blogger!) and there are hundreds of people who applied and met those criteria. It’s tough to narrow down, but I can assure you, it wasn’t because you lacked qualifications. I do hope you can still attend. I’d love to get some running tips!

Denise, I have learned so much from you. I think you are amazing and BlogHer would have been lucky to have you as a volunteer. You embody all the criteria that in my mind BlogHer represents. Keep on doing all you are doing. I wouldn’t change a thing about you or how you are going about getting your message out. You are awesome just the way you are and this just wasn’t your year for volunteering at BlogHer. But that means that another amazing opportunity is just around the corner…I KNOW IT!!
