At the young age of seven, I first saw Grease on the silver screen in 1978. Thirty years later, not even a knotted-up knee would keep me from missing a sing along showing of Grease. So, Sunday evening, Erika, Susie and I made our way to the Tampa Theater to sing “shoo bop shoo wadda” with the students of Rydell High and several other Grease enthusiasts. Unfortunately for me, sporting heels while walking the sidewalks of downtown Tampa and climbing the stairs of the Tampa Theatre was not the best therapy for someone trying to recover from a running injury. But, to sing “Sandra Dee” with a few hundred other Grease fans was so worth the pain I endured!
Costumes were encouraged, so of course, this wannabe Pink Lady had to find the perfect outfit. I pulled together my ensemble with the help our local Goodwill. The scarf is actually a belt from my oldest daughter’s pants. Notice the heels? Ah…the price one will pay to look good.
Before the feature presentation, the presence of everyone in costume was requested on stage to participate in a costume parade. They were some really great costumes! I even complimented the Rizzo standing next to me. She looked fantastic!
Like silly girls at a slumber party, Erika, Susie and I discussed who we would love to play in the movie. Erika wanted to be Sandy, but I have always been more of a Rizzo kind of gal. Susie also shared my love for Rizzo. Then, it dawned on me. Every girl that grew up with Grease fits into one of two categories. You are either a Rizzo or a Sandy.
If you are a Rizzo, you’re a born leader. You are THE bad girl, a tough broad with a rough exterior. Inside, you are soft and vulnerable but you never let it show and wouldn’t dream of letting anyone see you cry. To spare your feelings and keep you from getting hurt, you build a wall as defense mechanism, but sarcasm is your best weapon.
If you are a Sandy, you are a kind, naive and vulnerable person full of warm fuzzies. Your naïveté allows you to look at the world through rose colored glasses and you will cry at the drop of a hall pass. You see the good in everyone. You are simply looking for true love and respect in a cruel world and you are even willing to change who you are for a man.
So, which are you? Are you a Rizzo or a Sandy?
Love Grease..I think I wore the album out when I was a kid.
I was a little bit of all of the characters…but I LUV signing Rizzo’s version of Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee..fun!
RIZZO!!!!!!! Because I’m never sarcastic…
I’m so glad you posted this. How fun! You look the part for sure! I’m guessing I would have to say Sandy…I’m way to emotional to be Rizzo. 😉
Totally a Rizzo. Not that I was ever a bad girl. Sigh, I was likely viewed as a Sandy. But deep down, I am totally a Rizzo. A Grease sing-along? I think I’d died and gone to heaven. I wasn’t seven when I say it though…try 17.
Totally %100 Sandy. But that should not surprise anyone.LOL
This looks like a blast. I think I’m a little of both.
Our high school performed Grease this year and some parents got angry about language and adult situations and contacted the school.
I have to say, I made an educated decision taking my girls to see it. I knew what to expect. Are you trying to tell me these people never saw Grease?! Yah, right.
As a child I had the record album, the book, and sang the songs dressed as Sandy around my living room for a few years. I was too young to understand the dirty language, I guess.
I’m heading to see Grease next month here in Houston with my mom and best friend. I am really excited about going. Glad to see you had a good time last year in Tampa watching the show.
I’m not sure who I would be as it seems very black and white but no gray area. I’d like to think I’d be in the gray area but since there isn’t one I’ll go with Sandy.
