Blogger, Can You Spare a Dime?

With my recent Disney accomplishment, I felt confident to take on the Michelob Ultra Challenge at this year’s Gasparilla Distance Classic.  After running a half marathon and a marathon the next day, I feel prepared enough to take on a mere 5 K, 15 K and a marathon the next day.  After all, it’s hardly a Goofy Challenge

Upon registering for the event, I suffered from a bit of sticker shock.

Michelob Ultra Challenge Entry Fees (15K, 5K & Marathon):  $160

Are you serious?  It would appear that Jose Gaspar and his scurvy pirates be searching for treasure with those prices!  Arrrr!

Crushed by the mere cost of this event while still recovering financially from a very expensive Disney retreat for last weekend’s events, I chose not register for the event.  :-(

But then, I cleverly crafted a scheme to help off-set some of the cost for this overpriced race.

Listen, I am a SAHM mom with no income.  I am not above a little panhandling to help offset the cost of this extortionate race.  In the immortal words of TLC, “I ain’t too proud to beg.”

So, if find it in your heart to drop a few PayPal payments in my rundmt@tampabay.rr.com tin can (a.k.a my PayPal account), I would be eternally grateful.  To show my gratitude and appreciation for your contribution, I promise to run a better chip time than Disney.

Please spread the word around the blogosphere about my panhandling .  Take my tin can bloggie button and pass it along to your blogger friends.  Remember to link back here.  Thanks so much! :-)

Sunday Running Log #17

With the Disney Marathon behind me, I now face my next big challenge: the Gasparilla Distance Classic on Feb. 28.  And so the training begins again!

Feeling pretty about my performance with the Unofficial Goofy Challenge, I’ve decided to go for the Michelob Ultra Challenge at Gasparilla, which consists of three races: 5 K, 15 K and a marathon.

I consulted Hal’s multiple marathons 6 week plan.  For the first week after a marathon, he suggests a week of rest or short runs, if you feel up to it.  For Sunday, Hal recommends a 1-2 hour work-out of any kind, which can include running.

By Sunday, my mind and body was ready to run again and I decided to run 10 miles.  According to the plan, week two recommends a 12 mile run the following Sunday.  Because a 10 mile run would take me about an hour and a half, I thought the distance was a great way to start the training program.

The temperature at 7:00 a.m. was 35 degrees, which about the same temperature of the half marathon at Disney and my little run in the North Carolina mountains.  With Tiffany out of town and Lori too chicken to face the cold deciding to sleep in, I faced the cold long run alone.

I took my time to ease back into my long Sunday routine.  My slow pace was reflected in my time (10.27 miles, 2:00:36).

No crazy clown stories or scary stalker encounters.  It was too freaking cold for any other creatures!

But It Ain’t No Lie! It’s Time for Five Minutes for Fitness!

During both Disney races, there were DJs placed sporadically along the route blasting tunes to keep the runners motivated.  I loved the variety of music they played, which often caused me to break out in random dance moves, like the Hustle and YMCA.  I’m sure I irritated the runners around me and they were probably hoping I would trip!

When NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye boomed over the speakers, I couldn’t control the compulsion to bust out my best hip hop moves with that blast from the past.

Then, during my long haul on Sunday, I remembered Darrin’s Dance Grooves, which taught the basic dance steps to all your favorite pop videos.

So, due to my NSYNC flashblack at Disney, I am dusting off Darrin’s Dance Grooves to Bye Bye Bye for this week’s installment for Five Minutes for Fitness.

Once you learn all the steps, try dancing along with NSYNC at the American Music Awards.  Doesn’t JT look like such a baby?

But it ain’t no lie.  Baby, Bye, Bye, Bye!

Disney Marathon Weekend: My “Unofficial” Goofy Challenge

I know many of you are anxiously awaiting my recap of Disney Marathon Weekend (My Unofficial Goofy Challenge) and may be wondering how I did.  Well, after running 39.3 miles, the good news is I can still walk and climb the stairs in my home without falling!

Of course, my legs were sore, but I was not in agonizing pain simply because I took each race at a moderate pace.  At the beginning of each race, it was difficult to find a pace faster than 12 minute miles due to the sheer volume of runners and speed walkers but I was grateful for the forced slow pace to reserve my energy for the long haul.

Thrilled to be part of an amazing experience, I learned several things:

1.  True athletes are the most supportive and encouraging people you will ever meet.  Before the race weekend, I arranged to meet Lindsay of Chasing the Kenyans.  She is a dedicated runner who thought I was full of energy!  It was such a pleasure to meet her!

lindsay

Another runner blogger, Becelisa, also offered her encouraging words via text messages.  Although we missed each other this race, I am sure I will see her at Gasparilla.  Both Lindsay and Becelisa finished with excellent times.  (Be sure to visit their blogs to read about their Disney experience.)

I also met a pair of father and son marathoners.  The son attempted his first marathon.  Dad faced marathon #9 and strived for a time around 4:40.  Yet, both gentlemen wished Tiffany and I success on our first marathon.

Then, I met the most supportive athlete out of the pack.  This runner overheard me telling Lori that I needed to remove my sweatshirt after our first couple of miles in the half marathon.  Hoping for another type of entertainment outside of the usual Disney productions, he encouraged me to run topless, if necessary.  I happened across him in the Tomorrowland restrooms during our marathon on Sunday and on our second encounter, he happily posed for a picture hoping once again for a free peek at my pups.

2.  It really is a small world after all!  While walking to the start line of the marathon, another runner commented on Tiffany’s hideous hieroglyphic mocha explosion colored blanket that she wrapped around herself to combat the cold.  After chatting a bit, I realized that I had stumbled across Chloe from Running with a Bottle of Wine!  Although we started the race together, she took off and finished in record speed.  Chloe was as adorable as I expected and I am so happy for our chance encounter!

3.  Runners are highly driven, goal-oriented people.  During this race weekend, there were blind runners, competitors in wheelchairs and runners with prosthetics.  I met one woman who decided to run after surviving a stroke and another woman who ran after surviving a brain aneurysm.  I also spotted two pregnant mommas running in the marathon.  I am in awe in what drives these athletes.

4.  Sport gels pack an amazing amount of energy boost!  Although I like to believe the magic of Disney carried me through to the finish line, it was more likely the Clif Shots.  I highly recommend Vanilla.

5.  Clif Shots make you gassy and may even cause you to shit yourself diarrhea.  Thankfully, I did not experience the latter, but I would like to publicly apologize to anyone who may have been standing in line near me at any number of rides at Magic Kingdom or Epcot.  No, Walt Disney World does not smell like that.

6.  Black pepper makes you gassy.  A new bit of knowledge shared in passing by this gentleman.

Let me clarify.  He did not pass gas nor did I run through an unpleasant cloud produced by his bowels, rather I overheard a conversation he shared with his friend.  Thanks for the tip!

7.  And most importantly, I CAN RUN A MARATHON!  Correction, I can run a HALF marathon and a FULL marathon the next day!  That’s 39.3 miles, BABY!  Like Lori said to me throughout the race, “It’s not about the time, but the experience.  Worry about your time at Gasparilla.  There are way too many distractions at Disney.”  And when you see my video slideshow of the weekend, you will see why I was easily distracted!

I mostly ran each race, with some walking at the water stations/snack stops and occasionally posing for pictures.  I also danced when the mood hit me.  I finished each race strong and sprinted across the finish line like a Kenyan!  Crossing the finish at the end of the marathon, I cranked my arm in the air and encouraged the crowd “To make some noise!” all while still smiling.

When a volunteer placed my Mickey medal around my neck, I cried.

Like I said before, there were a lot of Disney distractions during the race, which is reflected in my time.  But when you do ever get the opportunity to pose with Mickey Mouse during a race?  For kicks and grins and a good laugh, here are my stats for both races:

So, This is What Goofy Feels Like Then?

Although this week is intended to be a “rest week” with short runs according to my BFF Hal, my training has been next to obsolete, but filled with lots of rest.  At least, Hal would approve.

For about a week, I have had this dizzy, light-headed, drunk feeling.  At first, I thought the thin N.C. mountain air was getting to me, but the sensation never ceased when we returned home to Florida.

Sunday, I attempted an 8 mile run, which was a sad attempt for sure!  Then, I had all good intentions to try to run on Tuesday with hopes that the dizziness would be gone, but no such luck.  So, instead of running, I visited the doctor.  The good and bad news is that I have fluid in my ear, which thankfully, will drain on its own, but I have fluid in my ear!  I am still dizzy!  UGH!!!

Worried that my lack of running would affect my performance this weekend, I decided to quit whining about being dizzy get a grip on myself stand my ground (so to speak) and just run.  I ran 6 miles this morning at a 9:56 minute mile pace and it felt good.  I didn’t feel tired, strained or faint from the dizziness.

My 6 mile run gave me the little extra confidence I needed to face this weekend.  I feel ready.

On side note, I became overwhelmed with emotion during my warm-up. I thought to myself: This is it.  Race day is almost here.  I’ve trained a year for this event and it’s two days away.  Wow.

Not the most profound thoughts, but very emotional nonetheless.  My thoughts hit me like a tidal wave and my eyes filled with tears.

I have achieved a goal that others only dream about.

(Oh yeah, you read that correctly.  I indeed broke all grammar rules and ended my sentence with a preposition.  When your lazy ass runs a marathon, then I will happily revise my grammar.)

Five Minutes for Fitness: Hot Diggity Dog!

With the Disney Marathon right around the corner, I thought I would bring back an episode of Five Minutes for Fitness with a Mickey Mouse treat.  This video montage of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’s Hot Dog Song will surely start your new year with a little spring in your step.

When the girls watch the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I love to dance in front of the T.V and copy the silly steps of the characters.  My kids roll with laughter at how ridiculous I look, but at least I’m moving and grooving with the help of the Mickey and the gang!

Pluto pumps out a set of push-ups.  Minnie incorporates resistance into her upper body movement.  Daisy, Donald and Mickey offer moves that work the core.  But, I particularly like Goofy’s style, because he attempts a whole body approach with his fancy footwork.  I think I may even finish my marathon (the unofficial Goofy Challenge) with Goofy’s dance.

So, pick a character and learn the dance steps.  Once the songs ends, play it again and follow the dance moves of another character.  Have fun with it, but remember to bring the kids in on the fun, too!

This is the Face of Evil

belleAbout a year ago, I purchased two life-size Belle dolls for my girls at the Disney Store (on sale, of course) and gave them as presents this past Christmas.  The dolls were a hit with my two princesses and they brought them to bed on Christmas night.

That night, Allan read the girls their bedtime stories as usual, but he tucked them in and turned out the light before I had a chance to kiss them good night.

I walked into a pitch black room and leaned in to kiss Emmalynn and All….What the???

The cold stare of a hideous rag doll startled me and made me jump out of my skin.

My girls and I rolled in laughter.

Once our giggles slowed, Emmalynn requested for me to sing her favorite lullaby. “Momma, sing Momma gonna buy me somethin’.”

I attempted to sing Hush Little Baby when a Belle doll began to rise behind Emmalynn’s back, like a vampire rising from a coffin.  Controlling the doll like a skillful puppeteer, Allana made the doll sit up, turn its head and stare at me again, like a scene from an 80′s B-horror film

Before I explain my gut reaction, I feel it is necessary to explain what would cause me to react in such a manner.  Do you remember the clown from Poltergeist?  That miserable marionette left such an impression on me that clowns and dolls have forever caused me to shudder.

With its haunting eyes gawking at me, I punched the doll in the head I bust out laughing once again and so did my girls.  I tried to shake out my sillies and sing another lullaby, Baby Mine, but my own snickers interrupted each note I sang.  No one could sleep that night because visions of Belle dolls danced arose in our heads.

And now every night since we returned from N.C. (Those freaky things were not coming with us!), my girls find new ways to haunt me disturb me tease me make me laugh with their scary life-size Belle dolls.

They’re heeeerrrre!

Sunday Running Log #16

As you probably noticed from my lack of running posts, it’s been almost two weeks of rest since my Big 20 Sunday run.  But after my long rest from running, I was ready to face a good long Sunday run again today.

I attempted to run during our North Carolina trip, but running up a mountain is as scary difficult as it sounds.  Afraid that I would slip of the slide of a cliff and fall into the abyss, I regrettably attempted only one 3 mile run while on our holiday, because mountain training is great training for the Disney Marathon kicked my ass.  My quads were killing me and my average pace was about 15 minute miles.  But, it was over a week since my 20 mile run and it felt good to run again.  It was a good kind of pain.

While running in the mountains, I truly appreciated the breathtaking 4000 foot high view, which was completely opposite from my usual flat Florida runs.  Plus, I was also forced to appreciate the sounds of nature while running since I forgot my iPod shuffle.  I believe I heard elk mating, and not a sound I particularly want to hear again, but I enjoyed following the sounds of a trickling stream along my path.

One peculiar sign forced me to detour, though.  Other than a tripe soup, I still haven’t been able to figure what a modongo is, however, if I ever meet one, I don’t think I would ever back up slowly but rather run for my life for fear that I may be hit with hot tripe soup or attacked by some Chubacabra-like creature.

modongo-sign-1

On our return car ride to Florida, Tiffany sent me an e-mail forcing urging me to commit to our training.  “Hal says we only have to do 8 miles”, her e-mail cleverly tried to manipulate motivate me to run with her on Sunday.

So, at 6:00 a.m. this morning, Tiffany and I met for our usual and back on track long Sunday run.  It felt good to be back in our routine.  Wish I could say the same for my 8 mile run!  Now that was a sad state!

Although this week is supposed to be a light training week to prepare for the marathon, I really feel like I owe it to myself to get at least another long run in before Sunday.  I have had a two week rest with the holidays and my body is craving the training again.  I would really like to attempt another long run (10-12 miles on Tuesday morning) and then two shorter runs (3 miles) on Wednesday and Thursday and resting on Friday.  Saturday is the Disney Half marathon, which Lori and I will run together and on Sunday, Tiffany and I face the Disney Marathon.

A year has passed since my running partners and I decided to commit to this endeavor.  It’s been a long year of training to prepare for this race and I know I am ready.  I’m trilled and excited to be part of it, but a nervous wreck at the same time!

Please say and prayer for me and my friends that we stay healthy and injury free.  I doubt I’ll be able to sleep at all this week, but please send some rest vibes my way, too.

Thanks for all your support!
